Note: Thanks for the reviews guys! And taking an interest in my story : ) also, I’ve only played through the second game and brief snippits of the first. So if I’ve gotten any of the details wrong or you see anything that needs to be corrected, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

After the ER doctor had cleaned up Gumshoe's injured bicep, he was free to go; leaving with several stitches and a prescription for some antibiotics as a parting gift. Edgeworth sat in the waiting room for what felt like the longest two hours of his life, becoming uncharacteristically restless and fidgety. His knee was bouncing up and down rapidly, making the hard plastic chair he was sitting in clank noisily against another hard, uncomfortable chair. While the noise annoyed him, a sadistic part of him kept it up purposefully as he watched the nurse on desk duty flinch with every loud pronounced *Clank*.

*CLANK*
*CLANK*
*CLANK*

"Is there anything I can help you with, Sir?" The Nurse asked through gritted teeth, her polite mask crumbling and leaving a heated glare in its wake. Miles grinned and was getting ready to send her off to see what was taking so long, when the Detective walked out the triage exit.

Gumshoe's arm was in a sling; his upper arm looking thick and puffy. Through the tear in the red stained white shirt, Miles noticed the sterile white bandages contrasting with the tan ace bandages holding them in place.

"Hey Pal!" The Detective's face brightened when he noticed Edgeworth, "I'm sorry to make you wait so long. I was talking to the doctor about how soon I would be able to interrogate Beggins...seems he’s going to be out for quite some time. Maybe I went a little over board on the punches." Gumshoe murmured thoughtfully.

"Beggins?" Edgeworth asked "Is that the name of the fellow we ran into tonight?"

The Detective nodded, "The boys found his wallet on him; Tony Beggins. One of the guys ran his sheet, mostly petty theft, some breaking and entering a few years ago, drug possession, etc the list goes on...Nothing as serious as what he was about to try tonight."

The Prosecutor scoffed, "Well, I suppose there's a first time for everything isn’t there, Detective?" Gumshoe winced and shifted his arm around slightly in the sling.

“At any rate, it is getting rather late,” The silver haired man fished around in his pocket for a moment and retrieved a set of keys, “and I’m assuming you will require some assistance getting home.”

Sheepishly the other man scratched the back of his head, “I don’t want to put you out or anything, Pal.” He paused and looked at his wounded arm dejectedly for a moment, “But seeing as how my car was repossessed a few weeks ago, I sure would hate to have to walk home in the cold! But, I’ve gone through worse, so I’m sure I can manage…”

Edgeworth’s eye twitched slightly, “I’m driving you home Detective, and that settles that.”

After the pair exited the Emergency Room, Gumshoe began walking more slowly, his gaze drifting towards the night sky. Miles stopped and turned around when he could no longer hear his companions trailing footsteps. Dick had stopped altogether and was staring at the barely visible stars, his face a hard mask of concentration. It was a look that Miles had the displeasure of witnessing on the other man’s face only at the scene of the most grisly of homicides.

“Is everything alright, Detective?”

The dark haired man blinked lowered his eyes to meet the Prosecutor’s, “Yes, Sir. I’m just…” he hesitated, “grateful that you’re alright, Sir.”

Miles gave him a small laugh, “Me too.” Gumshoe smiled back at him and began walking again.

Once the two men were comfortably seated in Edgeworth’s posh ‘I-cost-more-than-Dick Gumshoe’s-pension’ car, Miles brought up the subject of his friend’s convalescence.

“I spoke to the Chief and he and I came to the agreement that you’ve been long over due for a vacation, so you will be on paid leave for the next month while you recuperate.”

Gumshoe blinked, “But, Pal, my arm will be fine way before that. The Doc in the ER said that I can return to work in the next few days as long as I take it easy, and the sling only needs to stay on for a few weeks.”
“Yes, well, you see you won’t be alone on your little vacation, Gumshoe,” Miles scowled rather darkly at the tail lights of the car in front of them. “It seems after I informed the Chief of the circumstances surrounding the shooting, he seems to agree with you in thinking that someone may have placed a price on my head.” The scowl turned to a sneer and the Prosecutor turned a corner a little more sharply than what was necessary, tossing Gumshoe against the car door. “He seems to have had a little chat with some of the higher ups and I’ve been ordered to take some, ‘time off’, as they so sweetly put it. I think they’re more afraid someone would be stupid enough as to break into the Prosecutor’s office, gun’s a blazing killing off myself and several hostages; a whole gory blood bath scenario.” Miles finished with a bored wave of his hand.

Gumshoe looked slightly green after Edgeworth’s little speech.
When the two pulled up in front of Gumshoe’s rundown apartment building the Detective paused, “Mr.Edgeworth?”

“Hmm?” Miles was entertaining himself by looking in the rearview mirror at a couple having a lovers quarrel , she was perched out of a third floor window tossing insults and articles of clothing at a distressed looking young man on the sidewalk.

“Don’t go home tonight, Pal.” Gumshoe had his head turned away from him. “I suspect that pretty soon whoever hired Beggins is going to learn that you didn’t bite the bullet tonight, Sir. If they know where you work, then they probably know where you live. Maybe it’s best you stayed somewhere else for a few days, preferably somewhere that’s under police surveillance."

“How ironic of you to mention such a thing, Detective…” Gumshoe looked back at him questioningly. Miles suddenly felt exhausted at the prospect of explaining the other lengthy part of the conversation he’s had with the chief of police.

“You see, Gumshoe, the chief and my superiors thought it best that I leave town for few weeks. Your Chief has offered me the use of his vacation home along the coast; about two hours drive from the city. He said that he kept the house well stocked up on necessities even in the winter months, so I should have little reason to leave the property."

Gumshoe gave him a half hearted smile, “Gee Sir, that’s great. I didn’t know the Chief was so well off! I think you’ll do fine there, plenty of quiet time to research some of your cases. You’ll probably enjoy all the solitude.”

“Ah…Well Gumshoe, that’s the thing,” Miles felt himself getting unusually fidgety again; he began to bounce his leg up and down. “Remember that police surveillance you mentioned?”

The Detective blinked and nodded, “Yes, Sir.”

“You’re the Surveillance…”
