Vanessa/Lute B

“Suspicion”

Scene: Battlefield, Days after C

It was not long until everyone was back in the battlefield. It was a land of chaos and destruction, instigated by the true inner spirit of the human race. It was a place where a certain Pegasus and her rider had found themselves in the wrong place, almost every time.

“Ah, perfect! One of those…eyeball monsters, and it’s not looking at me! This is perfect!”

Eager for the kill, Vanessa and Titania swooped down towards the battlefield, approaching the backside of the monster. Silver Lance in hand, she slowly raised the point parallel to her forearm, wincing slightly, and prepared to spear right through the monster with her lance. Except…

Whoosh!

“Whoa! Titania, stop! Move back!”

A great ball of flame erupted from where the monster once was. It shrieked in a foreign tongue, shrieveling as it fell down to the earth, charred and blackened, and very, very dead.

“What the… Again? That had to be magic…but from where?”

Meanwhile… down below...

“My! How did I miss again?! This is unbelievable! I, Lute, will surely get her next time!”

She stared at the latest monster she had struck down by pure coincidence. Time and time again, all of her attempts to connect a spell to the Pegasus had been denied, all halted by an inconvenient monster or an incredibly accomplished feint or some such miracle. Lute sighed in frustration, then opened her Elfire tome, almost drained completely of magical energy, and began searching the skies for her target once again.

“Hello, Lute.”

“Eh! Um…”

Lute could feel the wind on her back, flowing across her bare arms and legs. Her hands fell to her sides, to prevent her clothes from flying up and revealing her backside. The the sound of wings softly flapping and hooves pressing against the flattened ground. It was so soft that only Lute, who was very near, could hear it, since the sounds of battle drowned out all other noise. A stray white Pegasus feather floated from behind her and brushed Lute's face gently as she turned around.

“Well, what a surprise! Seeing you, Vanessa, here in the battlefield…so close to me… Shouldn’t you be up in the skies, scouting and fighting?”

“I most certainly should be. But something that troubles me, and I believe you can help me with it.”

“Is that so? Whatever could you problem be? And how could I help you? My expertise and genius is in magic, Vanessa.”

Vanessa slid off her Pegasus, her lance still in hand. Her armor shone through the traces of battle criss-crossed all over the metal. The lance that she carried reflected the same condition, scratched, with blood sunk into the deepest grooves. Her free hand rested on the head of the Pegasus as she spoke to Lute.

“All throughout this battle, I have been tailed by magic. Right before I strike an enemy, I see the flash of magic. I have almost been hit with the very same magic, more times than I can count. Do you know the reason why?”

“Well, perhaps the Gods are displeased with you. Or perhaps we have encountered a new creature with new, unseen magic skills. For I would never intentionally attack you with magic, most assuredly.”

“Oh, really. Is that really all you know, Lute?”

“Yes, yes. But, dear Vanessa, if you are afraid to go back into the skies, you can always remain close by to me on the ground.”

And then I most certainly will not miss with my magic spells at all!

“No, I can't do that. I have my duty to my unit. I cannot stay here while they are up there. I thank you for your concern, Lute. I must be off. But I’ll be keeping my eye on you, so if I see anything suspicious, you can assist me with it, yes?”

“O-of course. I understand.”

Darn. But of course, I’m a genius. I’ll come up with another plan. There must be other things I can do to her…
