Chapter 2: How I Truly Feel About You

Zero looked with shock. He had never heard Iris ever say anything derogatory behind Colonel’s back. All that was ever heard through HQ were words of praise and respect: ‘He’s a hardworking soldier’, ‘He’s caring of his subordinates’, ‘He puts the safety of others above his own at all times’. This was the first time he ever heard Iris say something negative about her brother, and for that matter, it was also the first time she revealed how she truly felt about him.

Iris closed her eyes and took a stilted breath, fighting the guilt and the strange sense of relief. “Colonel…He’s a stupid…prideful fool.” She paused.

“He thinks that he’s fighting for the honor of his organization, that he’s setting an example for those wrongfully branded as mavericks…and how does he go about it? By helping Repliforce nearly destroy the world…He doesn’t even question General’s ideals, he just follows that old man blindly like his bloody lapdog…And what does he say, as he continues to cause unnecessary harm and destruction?…What is his excuse? ‘It’s in the name of pride…’”

Iris gritted her teeth. “Pride…PRIDE…”

“WHAT PRIDE DOES HE HAVE LEFT?!” Zero jumped upon the sudden outburst, the kind gentle girl he knew no longer present. “He is the bloody reason WHY Repliforce was branded maverick! He thinks that by fighting back he will set an example?! He is out of his fucking mind!” Iris continued, a little calmer than before. “What does he know…? He’s so fucking blinded by his bloody, pitiful pride and honor he can’t even consider an apology…He hides behind those words like a terrified little girl…Unwilling to accept the truth…unwilling to…” She huffed, tears beginning to stream down again. “Then again…He probably doesn’t know…”

“Iris…” The hunter’s face held a concerned expression. This was the first time Iris had ever expressed herself about her brother, and knowing how much she respected him, he knew it was painful to talk like this. She must’ve realized by now what she said, and being so close to Colonel, not to mention her only family…It must be tearing her apart.

“He doesn’t care about the consequences…All he cares about is what will happen in the end.” Iris choked. “ ‘A world for reploids, a place where only we exist’…Wh-What was he thinking…Th-That world doesn’t exist.” She paused, struggling to catch her breath.

“H-He believes only what General told him…H-He can’t see rationality for himself…He’s just as disillusioned and bloody f-f-fucking f-f-fanatical as they are…” She sniffled, her angry coming forth once more.

“He…He’s so stupid! HE’S SO…FUCKING…STUUUUPID!” She screamed, falling into a sob afterward. The next thing she knew, she felt a strong pair of arms embrace her, holding her comfortingly against a familiar red breastplate. She didn’t stop crying, the poor girl leaned into his chest and continued to let the tears fall. The strong hands gently made their way down her back in an effort to comfort her, but it only seemed to move more tears out of the sniffling reploid. “I…I’m sorry Zero…I’m sorry…I just had to say it! Brother’s a fool! HE’S A GODDAMN FOOL!” She said, her voice muffled against the metal.

“It’s okay, Iris…It’s okay…” Zero whispered. “I’m sorry for dragging you into this…I never imagined this would happen…” He continued to comfort her, moving his hand against the back of her suit as he held her.

“H-He can’t even l-let go of his p-pride b-b-because he’s a soldier…” Iris paused, her blue tear-stained eyes looking to the side at the city. “I-I knew h-he wouldn’t listen to me…even i-if I begged h-him…”

“Calm down Iris…Calm down…” Zero stated soothingly. “Everything will be okay…I’ll…I’ll talk with him…I promise, I’ll try and talk with him…”

Iris remained silent, sniffling and wiping away the last of her tears. She took a gasp, struggling to control her breathing, and gently pushed against Zero’s chest. The hunter got the message and removed his arms, letting Iris out of the embrace. Her head slowly pulled up, staring into Zero’s eyes…then, just as quickly, she turned on her heels and ran back toward the entrance. The door closed with a slam, leaving the crimson hunter alone on the rooftop once more.

------------

(Several hours later)

Echoing thunder boomed outside the headquarters, signaling a coming storm. Rain assaulted the rooftop and outer walls as lightning illuminated parts of the darkened city, the time now early evening. A small watery splash was made with each step of Zero’s boots, his body soaked with rainwater. He had been standing out for about an hour since the storm began, his mind still consumed by the thoughts of all that had happened. The hunter walked alone down the dim hallway toward the last door at the corner, Iris’ room. It was the last room the hunters could spare for accommodations, and while it was frowned upon by many of the higher uppers, she managed to get the room nonetheless.

Zero sighed and took off his helmet, tilting it to the side in his hands to drain the water caught in the slits. He quickly placed it back on his head after adjusting his dry head of hair, the blonde ponytail waving heavily with the mixed water. He stopped before the door and after a brief pause, gave a gentle knock. “Iris?” There was no reply. Thunder boomed once more outside and for a moment, Zero considered knocking a second time. His hand stopped an inch before the frame before he withdrew his arm. It would be better to leave her alone…I’ll…I’ll talk with her in the morning.

Just before he could prepare to leave, the door opened. “I’m here.” She stated, her brown bangs flitting before her eyes.

Zero briefly looked down at the floor, his eyes catching her Repliforce uniform, still in good condition, or at least the same since several hours ago. His mouth opened in an attempt to say something, but the words escaped him. …What was he trying to say anyway? What could he say that wouldn’t hurt her?

“…What is it, Zero?” Iris asked. She leaned against the frame with concern, noting Zero’s expression.

“I…It’s curfew time.” He finally said. “I…I just wanted to let you know.”

For a moment, he could’ve sworn she looked at him rather harshly, but it quickly faded away. She pulled her head out into the empty halls and looked about, then looked back at Zero. “Come in.”

“Iris, I’m only here to-”

“I want to hear what you really want to tell me.”
