Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Sasha opened her eyes to the familiar sight of the room at the Copper Coronet where she had been staying for the past few days. Rays of sunlight pierced through the wooden shutters. She turned sharply to her side to avoid their light shining into her stinging eyes. The sight of the dark skinned drow lying next to her was something of a shock. The touch of the drow’s arm wrapped around her waist and her body pressed to her own was to say the least not something she would have ever expected.
When Viconia lazily opened her eyes and smiled at Sasha, the paladin of Sune had to wonder just what had happened the night before. Sasha thought frantically and somewhat helplessly as she struggled to remember the events that could have led up to Viconia sharing her bed. The last thing she remembered was drinking in the Copper Coronet.
Viconia moved closer and much to her surprise lightly pressed her lips to Sasha’s and moved her hand up from her waist to take her breast in her hand. Sasha quickly grabbed her wrist and struggled to find the words to question her companion as to what she thought she was doing. Viconia simply gave her a wicked grin and stood up and walked to her clothes. It seemed only moments and the drow was fully dressed.
“Viconia, what are you doing in here?” Sasha asked, dumbfounded at the drow’s blatant delight at Sasha’s reaction.
“You do not remember, Sasha? I can not have made much of an impression if you can’t even remember the time we shared together last night.” Viconia replied with a glint of mischievousness in her eyes.
“What did you do to me, Viconia?” Sasha questioned with both a hint of anger and suspicion.
“I did nothing that you weren’t willing to allow me to do.” Viconia answered as she turned and walked towards the door. Sasha looked on exasperated as Viconia simply left without so much as another word.
Moments later as Sasha was still trying to collect her thoughts about what had just happened there was a knock at the door. Sasha looked up to see Jaheira stood in the doorway. Jaheira looked her usual serious self. And since Khalid’s death there was a coldness to her that Sasha hoped wouldn’t cloud the druid’s mind with hatred for those responsible for his death.
“I saw the drow leaving your room and looking rather pleased with herself. What happened last night, Sasha?” Viconia questioned in that all too familiar tone.
“I don’t remember, Jaheira. I was enjoying a drink downstairs in the bar and then I woke up in bed with …”
“I knew she was not to be trusted, Sasha. She has bewitched you, or drugged you. Whatever she did cannot be allowed to go unpunished. We should banish her from our group. There is no other way. It will be only a matter of time before she is trying to turn us against one another.”
“I have no wish to banish her, Jaheira. She is drow and we accepted that when she joined us. I have hope that Viconia can be redeemed. I cannot simply abandon her because she acts in the only manner to which she has become accustomed.”
“Your hope could cost us dearly, Sasha, as it has already cost me.”
“You blame me for Khalid’s death, Jaheira?”
“I did not say that. But since I began travelling with you I have given up much for your quest. And now it would seem to free Imoen, I … we are all expected to risk our lives once again.”
“I had no idea you felt this way, Jaheira. You are under no obligation to me and your promise to Gorion has been fulfilled many times over. I wish you to stay with us Jaheira, but I cannot and would not expect any more than you have already given.”
“You misunderstand me, Sasha. I have no wish to leave, Sasha. But your trusting nature and your need to save those who do not deserve such forgiveness, will I am afraid be our downfall.”
“I cannot change the way I am, Jaheira.”
“Nor would I ask you to.”
“Then what is it you would ask of me? I will not ask Viconia to leave. If she wishes to go then that is her choice. But she is as welcome amongst us as any of this group.”
“Then just be careful, Sasha. She will undoubtedly be planning something and it is not just your own life she could be playing with. Think also of those who trust in your leadership.”
“I will heed your words, Jaheira. And I have no doubt you would not allow anything to put us in danger. But at least give her a chance. That is all I ask.”
“As you wish, Sasha. You should hurry, the longer we wait the less time we may have to free Imoen from that mage. There is much to do and if we are ever to collect the ridiculous sum of gold coins that has been demanded we should waste no more time in the confines of the Copper Coronet.”
“You are right as always, Jaheira. What would I do without you?”
Jaheira studied the young paladin for a moment. She was undoubtedly the closest thing Sasha would ever have to a mother. And Jaheira was willing to play the role, albeit reluctantly. Jaheira turned with a slight hint of a smile.
“We will wait for you downstairs, Sasha. The others are ready to go when you are.”
“I won’t be long. I’ll just have a bath and then get changed.”
Jaheira nodded in agreement and then left.

Viconia silently cursed herself for the strength of the drow seduction potion she had prepared. Although she had managed to get the paladin to drop her guard and allow Viconia an insightful but brief glimpse into what lay beneath her carefully guarded exterior. But Sasha had collapsed into deep sleep before she had chance to do more than experience the briefest of pleasures. Viconia smirked as Jaheira approached.
“What have you done drow?”
“I have done nothing, Jaheira. Perhaps the look in your eyes is just one of envy.”
“Do you need to bewitch your lovers now, Viconia?”
Viconia stepped forward. The smirk was now a full smile that lit up her dark features and unnerved Jaheira with the drow’s blatant disregard for Jaheira’s own feelings. Viconia ran a finger down Jaheira’s cheek, then suddenly moved forward and pressed her lips to Jaheira’s. Jaheira was startled for only a moment and allowed the kiss only until she had regained her composure. Jaheira pulled away almost as quickly as Viconia had surprised her. Viconia laughed at the expression on the half elf’s face.
“What’s wrong, Jaheira. It must make a change to be kissed by someone other than that weakling fool who allowed himself to be murdered. Let me know when you’re ready for more, Jaheira. You’re far too beautiful a woman to mourn over that pathetic fool forever.” And with that she turned and strode away.
Jaheira looked on with hatred in her eyes. She had been willing to let the drow remain among them but now she wanted her gone. Her dear Khalid being referred to in such terms. She would take her revenge soon enough.

Sasha bathed herself and strangely thought of Viconia. She remembered little of what had happened and convinced herself that indeed nothing had happened between herself and the drow. This was hardly the time to be thinking of such things with her dear friend Imoen in such danger.
An hour later she was dressed and ready to start the quickly disappearing morning. Full plate armour hardly seemed appropriate for walking around the city. She had settled for her travelling clothes and a leather tunic. There seemed little chance they would encounter anything more than thieves and muggers while moving around the city.
Around the table sat the priest Anomen, next to him was the ranger Minsc. Yoshimo and Jaheira were next. Then Aerie and the noblewoman Nalia. Viconia stood away from the others and seemed somewhat distant. Sasha regarded them all warmly as she approached.
