PART 2: The Bodyguard
Youzhou, Northwest of Ji Province
Stronghold of Yuan Xi
Lady Zhen, Yuan Xi’s wife, had secrets.
One was that her relationship with her husband Yuan Xi did not work out. Of course, they kept the appearance of a couple to the public, but they were anything but a couple in private.
There was nothing wrong with her; she had acted her role as a proper wife perfectly. The problem was on his side.
Her late father-in-law Yuan Shao was correct when he considered Xi, his second son, as weak and unworthy of being a successor. She confirmed that herself as Yuan Xi never showed any indication of passion towards her. As a result, she was still as chaste as the day Yuan Shao’s sons vied with each other to win her hand. Not that it was a good thing for her, of course.
It was not that there is a physical component in Yuan Xi’s ‘weakness’. The second Yuan son did have a passion—towards the wrong target, that is. His true object of desire was Gao Gan, the Yuan brothers’ cousin, son of Yuan Shao’s sister. Little wonder then if on every assignment, Yuan Xi insisted to be accompanied by Gao Gan, because he said they work well together and Gao Gan’s talents were useful to him. Lady Zhen knew that Gao Gan was not particularly competent in either military or civil affairs, and the only reason was that Gao Gan would take her place on Yuan Xi’s bed.
Sometimes she wondered how things might have turned out if she were wed to Yuan Tan or Yuan Shang—both were virile men who would not hesitate to kill his own brother just to have her. Yet the not hesitating about killing thing was the reason Yuan Shao decided to give her to Yuan Xi. The old man thought he was being fair—but his solution turned out to be the worst for everyone.
And there she was, sitting in front of a mirror in her bedchamber, one she hardly ever shared with her ‘husband’, with her hair down and her face unadorned, about to prepare herself for a meeting with her husband and the city’s officials. Due to her martial arts skills and charisma, she was competent to be one of the region’s military leaders. The Yuans had a huge army, and their territory was large and populous, but Yuan Shao was not good at scouting or keeping talented people. Just last year scores of Yuan men went over to Cao Cao after the defeat in Guandu, most notably Zhang He, of which she was good friends with. Then Yuan Shao’s sons were forced to make use of any manpower they still have, even crooks like the Lu brothers or inept men like Gao Gan. Or making their own family join the fighting like what Yuan Xi made her do. At first, she was not keen on the idea but during past skirmishes with Cao Cao’s army, she realized that at least she might channel her frustration by fighting, and she was not lonely out there.
No, she was definitely not lonely out there.
Not in that bedchamber, either.
A pair of female hands caressed Lady Zhen’s long black hair.
“Should I start preparing you, Milady?”
“Should you, Qing? I’m not that eager to be on that meeting…”
“But I do love making you pretty more than anything else, Milady.” The hands glided over Lady Zhen’s shoulders to embrace her and a woman’s face appeared next to hers.
“More than smacking people’s heads with a staff?” Lady Zhen returned the embrace by touching that woman’s cheeks. Her family name was Niu, her personal name Qing. She played many roles around Lady Zhen: personal servant, hairdresser, makeup artist, costumer, confidant, and as mentioned earlier by Cao Cao’s subordinates, bodyguard.
And also, lover.
She was also formerly Zhen Ji’s sister-in-law. Niu Qing came from a humble background, a servant girl of the Zhen family. Zhen Ji’s elder brother Zhen Yan fancied her and took her as his wife. Unfortunately, Zhen Yan died not long after. Being a commoner, the widowed Niu Qing was treated rather coldly in the noble Zhen household, but Zhen Ji protested her mother about it and took care of her ever since. Although Zhen Ji did not want her to, Niu Qing repaid her kindness by acting as Zhen Ji’s servant. The two were always together, day and night, outdoors and indoors; and when Zhen Ji was wed to Yuan Xi, she took Niu Qing with her.
Niu Qing was a few years older than Lady Zhen, also taller and more mature, although in terms of physical beauty Lady Zhen was clearly superior. Whether Yuan Xi knew about their intimate relationship, they did not care; they did not bother with his relationship with Gao Gan either. It was an awkward arrangement, but at least it kept all of them content.
“That part about smacking people’s heads can be enjoyable too, especially when I’m fighting beside you,” Niu Qing answered. “If there’s a military meeting coming up, we might get some action later. Now, let’s get you prepared.”
Niu Qing quickly worked her talented hands on Lady Zhen’s hair, pulling it up and tying it into a ponytail that hung all the way down to Zhen’s buttocks, while leaving some hanging at the sides, framing her face. Next she took off the light robe currently worn by Lady Zhen. And she paused for a moment, admiring Lady Zhen’s ivory-white skin and voluptuous curves.
“How long are you going to keep me naked, Qing?” Lady Zhen protested, yet her cheeks were flushed. Niu Qing reluctantly stopped ogling and made her way to the wardrobe, choosing one from quite a few yellow dresses (official colour of the Yuans!) for Lady Zhen to wear.
Niu Qing helped Lady Zhen put on a thin white robe as undergarment first, then a long ornate gold-coloured dress which was asymmetrical below the waist, with a high slit adorned with a golden tassel on the left side and a tail decorated with a large single peacock feather ‘eye’ design on the right side. The dress was rather… figure-hugging. Like every other dress in Lady Zhen’s wardrobe, this one was Niu Qing’s handiwork, and since nobody else in the Middle Kingdom knew more about Lady Zhen’s measurements than her, the dress could fit and flatter her lady’s physique perfectly.
Lady Zhen sighed, feigning embarrassment. “Don’t you think this one’s too flashy for just a meeting?” she said, but after she saw Niu Qing back into staring at her in awe, she just chuckled. Sometimes Lady Zhen wondered if her sister-in-law-turned-companion were thinking of her as a doll to dress up. That meant the next thing would be…
“Now if you could just sit here… I’m gonna do your make-up!” Niu Qing said. Her tone and her expression did nothing to hide the fact that she had been looking forward to it.
Like a painter given a blank piece of paper, Niu Qing began to decorate Lady Zhen’s face. She put on a luscious shade of reddish-pink on Lady Zhen’s lips and a touch of lavender on the eyelids, powder and rouge. She meticulously drew perfect styled arcs to enhance Lady Zhen’s eyebrows, an important aspect of a woman’s beauty in that era. The natural beauty was transformed into a glamorous goddess. Niu Qing took a step back to inspect her work of art.
Her long black hair, cascading gently down her back. Her statuesque figure, wrapped in gold-coloured silk. Her face, gleaming with radiance. Her beauty spot under her left eye…
“Fit for an empress,” Niu Qing praised, “although I sometimes wonder how you’d look in other colours, red, green, …blue?”
Lady Zhen just smirked. That last sentence by Niu Qing was just an offhand remark… yes, just something her sister-in-law said without thinking, right? She didn't refer to the colours of other warlord factions (especially Cao Cao's blue) intentionally, right?
“Surely you are not implying anything mentioning those colours?” No, Lady Zhen was not sure. Hence that previous question.
“Aiya!” Niu Qing cried out, “Me and my no-good tongue! I beg your pardon milady; it was very careless of me!”
“If I were the empress, like you’d wished me to be, I’ll have you punished for that,” Lady Zhen said in a mock regal manner. “Should I have you bound naked and left outside in a snowstorm, or brand your buttocks and order you to make it visible to everybody, or send you away as a gift for a tribe of horny barbarians?” she said jokingly.
“Aiyaa! Please don’t, Your Majesty! Your punishment suggestions are always so kinky!”
The two women laughed at their own play-acting. But then Lady Zhen’s face turned serious.
“Since I always get my news from you, Qing, I’m sure you also know that at this point, it’s yellow against yellow with blue anticipating at the sidelines, right?”
“Yes, milady,” Niu Qing answered. “Most likely the following meeting will be about what we should do with the approaching army led by Lu Kuang and Lu Xiang.”
“I’ve been told that also,” Lady Zhen sighed, “Yellow against yellow… how is it that the Yuan family end up like this, Qing?”
“You should be able to predict that when the three—I mean two—Yuan brothers almost killed each other over you, little sister-in-law,” Niu Qing answered.
Lady Zhen sighed. She stood and walked a little, and paused as she thought about the situation. Niu Qing kept silent. Lady Zhen then turned towards Niu Qing, with a melancholic look on her face.
“What should I do, big sister?”
Their bond was forged in a series of emotional episodes in the past… mourning a lost husband and brother together… taking the risk of upsetting the whole family to protest about unfair treatment … anxiety in facing the passionate advances of the Yuan brothers … disappointments of an ill-fated marriage … and now, helplessness in a world that took a turn to the worse for their fortunes.
What else could a confidant do other than embrace her mistress?
Lady Zhen’s head found a place to rest on Niu Qing’s shoulder, as the servant was slightly taller. Part of her wanted to cry in frustration. She’d guessed what the results of the upcoming meeting would be. There had been infighting among Yuan Shao’s sons. Before, it was only between Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang. Now Yuan Tan wanted to drag Yuan Xi’s side into the conflict. And Yuan Xi’s side was severely lacking officers—which mean he’ll make her fight. Leading troops into battle, killing, slaughtering humans… the blood, the pain, the screams… It was true that among other skills, she’d also learned martial arts—as well as the rather esoteric art of managing her qi through her breathing, which she combined with her musical skills into her unique flute-based fighting style. But she never liked killing, or death. And fighting on the front lines was definitely not something a noble lady should do!
Niu Qing wrapped her arms around her lady’s body. Her right hand patted and caressed Lady Zhen’s head. All these years they’ve been taking turns being the comforter for the other; it was Niu Qing’s turn that moment.
In their most intimate moments, they no longer refer to themselves as mistress and servant, no more ‘Milady’ and ‘Qing’; those recent distinctions gave way to their older relationship as sisters-in-law.
“Don’t worry, little sister,” Niu Qing whispered, “Even if we’re told to climb a mountain of swords I will be at your side, I will be your shield.”
Niu Qing lowered her head and locked her lips with Lady Zhen’s, her tongue darting to meet her lady’s—her little sister-in-law’s, who returned the attention. Were sorrow could be transferred that way, she was more than willing to suck out all sorrow residing in her lady’s mind at the moment.
The sisterly kiss lasted a few moments before they reluctantly broke apart, leaving a fragile thread of saliva still connecting their tongues. Niu Qing continued by sweeping aside the strands of hair covering Lady Zhen’s left ear and started nibbling her lady’s earlobes as her hands caressed Lady Zhen’s buttocks. Niu Qing then worked her ‘no-good tongue’ from Lady Zhen’s ears down to the side of her neckline, tickling and teasing, causing the younger noblewoman to gasp in delight.
“Big… sister Qing…” Lady Zhen whimpered, overwhelmed by Niu Qing’s attention on her neck. She tried to squirm out of Niu Qing’s embrace, but Niu Qing followed all her movements. Eventually they moved close enough to Lady Zhen’s bed, and there Niu Qing released her. Lady Zhen collapsed back first onto her bed.
Niu Qing smiled mischievously; she felt like a cat eyeing a cornered mouse. Lady Zhen tried to rise again but Niu Qing quickly got on her way, straddling the lady’s body and swooped down on her lips, pinning her target in her bed with another deep kiss. Lady Zhen writhed, and she looked as if she wanted to say something. Niu Qing released her lip-lock and gave her a chance.
“Sis… ter…” Lady Zhen stuttered, as she spoke and moaned at the same time “…Plea…se…”
Niu Qing saw Lady Zhen’s helpless, hungry expression. Her little sister-in-law was puffing, trying to quell a surge of desire let loose by Niu Qing. She noticed beads of sweat staring to form on that perfectly made-up face. Although she knew the sweat would ruin her work, she wouldn’t mind making her lady perspire even more…
The servant girl loosened the sash that kept Lady Zhen’s dress wrapped on her waist. The outer yellow dress was swept aside. Next Niu Qing got the white under-robe out of the way. As a result, Lady Zhen was partly stripped from the waist down, her hips, crotch and legs revealed amidst loose clothing items while still keeping that perfect look above the waist. Niu Qing went down, moving her face towards Lady Zhen’s crack. She started licking Lady Zhen’s cunt; the lady bit her red lower lip in anticipation, and moaned at the first touch of her companion’s tongue.
That ‘no-good tongue’ of hers!
Just as Lady Zhen started to revel in the pleasure, Niu Qing stopped. Lady Zhen’s legs expressed her plea to get Niu Qing started again as they wrapped around Niu Qing’s shoulders and pulled her closer. Niu Qing’s arms went around those shapely legs, and her face returned to Lady Zhen’s crotch, teasing her lady’s cunt and on one occasion—arsehole.
“Aiyah!!” Lady Zhen yelped when Niu Qing’s tongue unexpectedly darted to her anus. “No, big sister, not… theereeeaAAH!”
Having been familiar with Lady Zhen’s body for years, the lady’s measurements were not the only thing imprinted inside Niu Qing mind. The servant also knew parts of her mistress’ body which if worked on would produce… interesting effects.
“AII! YEE! EEGH! UNN! QING…!” Lady Zhen thrashed and screamed as Niu Qing relentlessly assaulted her sensitive arsehole with her tongue. Her legs clamped harder on Niu Qing’s body, while her hands grasped and pulled her bedsheet. Niu Qing gave her a break as the older girl switched back to devouring Lady Zhen’s pussy, but she then gave Lady Zhen another shock, as she put the very tip of her left middle finger at the entrance of Lady Zhen’s anus. The noblewoman lifted her head, trying to see what Niu Qing was doing, but she immediately collapsed right back, screaming, eyes and mouth wide open as Niu Qing plunged her middle finger in her arsehole and sucked her cunt deeply at the same time.
“IIYYAHHH!! QIING… SISTER QING…! I’m going… crazy…!”
Niu Qing got intense, her mouth alternating between sucking, licking, and even nipping at Lady Zhen’s pussy, her finger going in and out, twisting and turning in her other hole. Lady Zhen was being overloaded by pleasure, her whole body ablaze with the passion sparked by Niu Qing’s erotic mischief. Lady Zhen’s words became blurred as she felt her mental defence crumbling; she wanted nothing more than to submit to her instincts—
“AIII….AHHHAA!!!” She screamed long and loud, her face showed pure ecstasy, her entire body spasming in climax.
Niu Qing stopped and gently released herself from Lady Zhen’s legs. She could feel the heat and quivering of her lady’s body. Although deep inside she also wanted to experience the same pleasure, she brushed aside her selfishness. Her lady needed the climax more now. She hoped that it would help Lady Zhen got rid of the sorrow and anxiety.
The two women were side by side on the bed, Lady Zhen on her back, savouring the afterglow, Niu Qing on her belly, casually gazing at her little sister-in-law’s ecstatic face. (It had not escaped Niu Qing’s notice that Lady Zhen’s face was sweating profusely then, so that her make-up had been partly ruined.) They stayed silent for a while, until finally Niu Qing spoke.
“How do you feel now, Milady?”
“Niu Qing… thank you very much for that,” Lady Zhen smiled, “I feel much better now.”
Niu Qing helped Lady Zhen stand. “Now that we have cleared your head, how about we get to that meeting? But… oh, milady, you shouldn’t appear in this condition!” She deliberately forgot that her lady’s messed-up condition was her own doing.
“There’s still time. You should take a quick bath and I’ll prepare you again afterwards. Let us go, then!!” Lady Zhen did nothing to prevent Niu Qing from taking her hand and dragging her to the bathroom… all the while grinning ear to ear imagining the things she'd do to her lady’s body!

Author’s notes:
Besides Krellscholar’s suggestion, a little history digging revealed the presence of Lady Zhen’s widowed sister-in-law who lived with her, and their relationship were described with these words: “When sleeping or awake, they were always together, and their mutual affection grew increasingly deep.” (Reference: Biography of Empress Zhen (Zhen Ji) http://www.kongming.net/novel/kma/empresszhen.php). See, even ancient Chinese biographers know how to give hints for 21st century lemon writers.
Lady Zhen’s dress here is a modified version of her DW3 costume.
I might’ve styled Niu Qing after Kohaku… o_O
