What mornings bring
Fires both sacred and profane -.Chapter two
You’re too important for anyone
You play the role of all you long to be
But I, I know who you really are
You’re the one who cries when you’re alone
You think that I can’t see right through your eyes
Scared to death to face reality
No one seems to hear your hidden cries
You’re left to face yourself alone
(Evanescence)
Ho tante cose che ti voglio dire,
o una sola, ma grande come il mare,
come il mare profonda ed infinita...
Sei il mio amore e tutta la mia vita!
(Giacomo Puccini, LA BOHEME)
Gabriel awoke with a start. Checking his surroundings he recognised this bedroom immediately. Oh Gawd, he thought, it was just a dream! He'd never have thought that dreams could last that long...but being a Schattenjäger he shouldn't be surprised. The guestroom of the von Glower residence was richly furnished, a huge double-bed dominated the room. Silken curtains and draperies adorned the walls and windows, a little chandelier and a few candelabras gave the room a classy look.
"Oh my....what a place.." Gabriel stretched and froze in his tracks.
When.....Donna?....had left him the night before he had been naked, THAT much he did remember. Now he was dressed and most definitely not having a hangover.
"What the fuck's goin' on?" he drawled incredulously.
As if to answer his question the door was opened to reveal a perfectly dressed Friedrich von Glower who was carrying a tray with a huge breakfast. The scent of fresh coffee and eggs was in the air, it made Gabriel's stomach growl.
"'s that what I think it is?" Gabriel eyed the coffee mug with a gleam.
"Guten Morgen, Schlafmütze!..... Good morning, Gabriel." The Baron placed the tray on the table close to the dresser. "We need to talk, Geliebter."
"Sure, talk ahead!" Gabriel conceded between gulps. What was he doing here? What had happened? And what was this Geliebter business about? Gerde had been trying to hammer some German into his head but she had never mentioned that word. It sounded like a nickname of sorts, maybe the German version of "buddy"? Darn, if only he knew.
"Gabriel...." The Baron's voice came from the left chair. "You need to eat, come on, have a seat." He had crossed his longs legs and watched Gabriel's every move with those magnetic blue eyes-
Gabriel took a seat but his mind was still elsewhere. Friedrich had brought him breakfast and.....why....if only he could remember. He'd drive back to the Huber farm to write to Gracie, she had to know that he was ok. And maybe that would keep her as far away from Munich as possible. Gracie....
"Mein Schatz, your little friend will be here at any minute." Friedrich said, his hand was on Gabriel's arm.
"Hmmmm???? Gracie? Oh, c'mon, Friedrich, it's not like she can......"
A dark shadow had crept between them. Everything....SOMETHING.... came back all at once, causing Gabriel to stand up so quickly that a huge amount of now only warm coffee landed on his jeans with a dull splash.
"Gabriel!" the Baron cried, pressing a towel against the stain immediately. "Have you burned yourself?" he asked gently.
But Gabriel only shook off his friend's hands with an angry growl. "Lemme be, will ya? I'm no kid!"
"Most certainly can't disagree there, mein Schatz!" the Baron retorted with a little smile.
"Friedrich........." Gabriel began, his voice blank. "How in Gawd's universe did I end up here?"

"Miss Nakimura, I demand an explanation!" Kommissar Leber repeated for the fifth time. Leber was at his patience's end and Grace's answers had not convinced him thus far.
Damn you, Gabriel! If you weren't around a werewolf to rip your throat out in my place I might do it myself!
"My dear Kommissar, it was nothing but an unfortunate mishap. Baron von Glower must have had some sort of attack. I'm sure it's nothing." Grace repeated with her most innocent smile.
The truth was that she wanted some answers. And she knew just where to find them.
"You may go now, Miss Nakimura. I will make certain that the remaining performance shall go on undisturbed. Statter! Bringen Sie Miss Frau Nakimura zur Tür! Und kommen Sie dann sofort zurück, es gibt Arbeit!"
She had not slept all night and it was taking its toll already. Added to that was a feeling of anger at herself. How could she have lowered herself to the level of such a drama queen? Wasn't she used to the fact that Gabriel had a knack for messing things up? And wasn't he always finding a way out anyway? Plus he didn't even want her on this case, so why should she care in the first place? What kind of a partner was Gabriel anyway?
Your kind....a little impertinent voice echoed through her mind.
"God, Gabriel, if it weren't for this Schattenjäger case I should just let you rot this time!" she said aloud before hailing a cab. She knew where to find her answers. Now it just depended on asking the right questions.

"Mein Alles, I don't think you're ready for this yet...." Friedrich said calmly.
"Oh, gimme a break already! Wasn't it you who showed up to talk about this shit?" Gabriel exploded at what he thought was the Baron's condescending attitude. "And quit giving me dumb nicknames I can't even understand!"
A shadow crossed the Baron's face for a moment but Gabriel was too fired up to notice the slight change. Moreover, an instant later the Baron was his balanced and elegant self again.
"Gabriel, we need to talk about where to go now. I want to take you to our lodge at Alfdorf. We have many things to talk about and I'd prefer a more intimate and quiet setting." Friedrich explained. He put one hand on Gabriel's tense shoulder and forced him back into his chair gently.
"Why the hell should I care?" Gabriel said, pouting in that most unique way that was his own.
Friedrich smiled, for half the battle was won. "Aren't you at least a little curious?" the Baron taunted his friend with an enticing smile.
"Ya gotta a way of findin' my weak spots, Friedrich..." Gabriel admitted casually.
"Do I indeed?" Friedrich laughed a low little laugh. "Finish your breakfast now. I know you must be dying to ask me some questions and/or to tear my throat out. Could either wait until I'm packed?" the Baron teased with a dead serious expression.
"Heck, Friedrich, I'm not gonna let you off the hook THAT easily!"
"I'm glad......"
Friedrich rose to his full height and patted Gabriel's shoulder. "Call for me if you need anything. I'm only a room away." He brought one hand to Gabriel's tousled head. "And brush that hair of yours......." His hand brushed a curl behind Gabriel's ear. He tore himself away from Gabriel's hair and went towards the door to prepare.
"Friedrich......what's it to ya whether or not I'll be with ya?" Gabriel asked as the Baron was reaching for the doorknob.
"Read my letter again, mein Alles. Your memory should be refreshed by it." Friedrich said gently.
