Chapter 2: All’s well…
Cai’s POV
She stood shoulder to shoulder with Yun and watched as the Wei cavalry charged them. ‘There must be a million of them…’ she thought to herself. She readied her shield and forked spear. This was not going to be easy. This was not going to be pretty. They had to hold Wei off and keep them from reaching the rest of the Shu army.
As the first line led by Cao Ren reached them, she jabbed her spear deep into the chest of one of the horses, mumbling an apology to the horse. During times of war it is always the innocent that suffer.
The soldier flailed his arms and dropped his halberd as he fell from the now dead horse. Cai did not hesitate to end his life before he had a chance to gain his feet. As she turned, she saw Yun dueling with Cao Ren. Ren was a large man compared to Yun. Ren was short and stocky and wore blue armor. He wielded a large buckler with a spike coming out of the end of it. She gave Yun his credit though. He did not back down and fought the great general with all his heart.
Their small regiment was fighting valiantly against the Wei army. Their only hope was that they could cause the Wei army heavy enough losses, that they would pull back… Hopefully, before the entire Shu force was killed. It was a long shot, but they had to maintain hope. You couldn’t fight a battle acknowledging that it was more than likely you were going to die.
She knocked yet another soldier from his horse and moved in for the kill when something slammed into her body knocking her from her feet. She looked up and saw several men standing over her with drawn weapons. She gave them one of her sweetest smiles and said in her cutest voice, “Oh dear me all these big strong men whatever am I to do!” She batted her eyes as she spoke and while the men were off guard, drove her spear into the chest of one of her attackers and then drove her foot into the chest of another pushing him back. She kicked up onto her feet in an excellent show of balance. As she kicked up, she brought her shield around and slammed another in the face cracking his jaw, and from the nasty popping of sinew, possibly his neck. She pivoted and caught the last assailant with the heel of her boot and dropped him.
She looked over and saw Ren was retreating. Obviously, Yun had managed to best him. It was good because it meant that the Wei army would start becoming demoralized, with their leader wounded and retreating. As she looked over at Yun, she saw he had dozens of minor wounds. He was soaked in the blood of enemies, his spear was caked red with it. The sight was a testament to his ferocity in battle. She felt so proud to be able to fight at his side.
She returned her attention to a lone soldier wearing very ornate armor, compared to the rest. It meant he was of officer status. He had a long sword and seemed intent on doing battle with her. She readied her forked spear and her shield and met his blade with her spear. “You wish to do battle with me?” She gave a cute giggle and brought her foot up square to his groin sending the man flailing back. She tilted her head and gave another giggle. “I could kill you now but that would be dishonorable. I will wait for you to gain your feet.” The man looked very angry as he struggled to get up. As soon as he did, she unleashed a furious assault on him knocking him back. In his struggle to parry her attacks, she managed to lock his blade between the forks of her spear. She gave it a sharp wrench and flung the blade from his hands.
She gave him her childlike smile “You may retreat now.” She giggled as the man turned and scrambled to get away from her. ‘Why can’t all battles be settled like that?’ she thought. She turned back to see how Yun was doing only to see a massive wave of men pouring down upon their location. Her heart sank and she knew this would be the end for them…
Yun’s POV
As he watched the Wei cavalry pour down the hill, he knew this would probably be his final battle. He was determined to make it one that would go down in history. He would NOT fade away without leaving his mark on the world. Especially not when the defeat was brought about by treachery; he set his eyes on the commander, Cao Ren. He knew that to make his mark upon this battle field, he would have to defeat this legendary and feared general.
Cao Ren was the cousin of Cao Cao. He had been with Cao Cao since the beginning of Cao Cao’s rise to power. When the call to arms against Zhang Jiao, the leader of the Way of Peace (or the Yellow Turbans) went out Cao Ren had rallied men to fight on behalf of Cao Cao. He was a fierce fighter and very strong; and as a tactician he was well renowned. He would be a formidable opponent, to say the least.
When he came within reach of his spear, Yun slammed his weapon against the massive buckler on Ren’s arm in an attempt to dismount the man, which would make fighting him a bit easier. When his first attempt failed, he reeled back and waited for the man to come about for another charge at him. This time, Yun dashed towards him and used the spear as a pole vault and drop kicked Ren square on his breast piece. Ren fell from his horse and rolled, coming up on his feet ready for battle.
Yun had always admired Ren. He was a man of honor and a skilled warrior. He would be a worthy opponent. Yun gave him a quick bow before they began their deadly dance. First Yun would feint forward, then Ren, as they paced in circles, sizing each other up. For brute strength Ren would be the winner there; but for agility Yun was the better man. The only calm to be found on the battlefield was between these two men as they fought the battle out with their minds as they stared each other down. Finally, Ren broke the silence between them and rushed forward bringing the spike on his buckler up to attack. Yun’s eyes shot wide for a moment, faking surprise. He let a small smile pass his lips as he smoothly twirled out of the way, and brought the pole of his spear across Ren’s back, propelling him forward several paces before the larger man managed to stop. He gave a grunt of pain and turned back to Yun.
He decided that course of attack would not work against such an agile opponent. Yun smiled, knowing he had bested the other man. Slowly Ren moved towards him. Yun stood his ground and just waited the right opportunity. He saw what might be a weakness in Ren’s defenses, but it was so slight it might be a ploy to lure him into the attack, so he did not move right then. He continued to observe it; finally he saw it. It was a perfect opportunity. He lunged forward with no warning. Ren barely managed to counter him, and then the fight began. It was so rapid and deadly, the combatants had problems processing what all had happened. They fought for what felt like an eternity, neither one able to maintain the upper hand.
The end came only when Ren was distracted by a giggle, a giggle that Yun knew belonged to Cai. Yun took that opportunity and jabbed his spear into a gap in Ren’s armor burying the blade of his spear into the man’s side. To his credit, Ren did not yell in pain. He hissed slightly and extracted himself. He conceded the duel to Yun as he beat as hasty a retreat as a wounded man can. Yun felt very proud of himself for besting such a talented and powerful general.
He saw the tide of battle slowly begin to shift in their favor. He charged into the heart of it. He knew he suffered dozens of minor wounds but he was beyond being able to feel pain. All that mattered was the fight; and fight he did. How many men fell to his spear that day is not known, but the battle was vicious. He heard Cai gasp, and turned to see what was going on. He saw a sea of red pouring towards them. More Wu soldiers! He gripped his spear, and set his jaw. This would indeed be a fine place to play out his final battle.
