Chapter 2

The sound of thunder crashes across the world that never was as rain pounds down upon the castle. Roxas lays curled up in his chamber, tossing in turning…

“Kairi!! I’ll come back to you…I promise!” a voice calls out in his dreams. The boy in red, falling through darkness, his key blade still in his grip as his heart gives way to nothingness.

“Boo…”

Roxas feels a warm breath against his ear and is ripped from his restless sleep. His sapphire eyes flutter open and as his vision focuses, he realizes he is face to face with wild, emerald eyes and a highly amused grin.

“Axel!…” Roxas scrambles away from the redhead, a blush forming across his cheeks.

Axel laughs. “Your first mission is being assigned today….hey, are you ok?”. The redhead notices that Roxas is staring at his sheets, in a daze.

“I had another dream about him…” Roxas whispers to Axel and half way to himself. The dreams had been less frequent and the memories attached to the boy in red were becoming more hazy but when the dreams did come, they were nerve wracking. Axel approaches Roxas and sits next to him on the bed.

“Don’t worry, they will fade…like all memories of the past” Axel studies Roxas’ face. Pieces of blonde hair hang softly in his face, accenting his beautiful ocean blue eyes and his pouty lips, turned in a frown. Axel bites his lip, searching for encouraging words for his friend…his only friend.

Roxas slid off the bed, searching for his coat. Axel remained sitting on the bed, devouring the blonde with his gaze. The boy wore nothing but a simple pair of black pants. He found repressing his unending curiosity towards the newest member of the organization was nearly impossible. The redhead tilted his head slightly, watching every muscle of Roxas’ body move as he slipped the coat over his shoulders and pulled the zipper closed, concealing every contour of his body, shutting Axel out.

“So, what’s going on?” Roxas broke the silence and Axel’s obvious concentration. Axel snapped out of his daze and smirked at the blonde who obviously noticed the other man completely undoing him with his eyes.

Axel blushed and cleared his throat uncomfortably. “We have to patrol the city today…” Roxas’ eyes widened as he looked past Axel, out the window and into the pouring rain.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Roxas pulled the hood to his black coat over his head and braced himself for the imminent soaking. He stood at the gates of the castle, watching as Axel walked ahead of him into the rain, hood pulled over his wild red hair. He stopped and glanced back at Roxas before continuing his walk, knowing the blonde would follow eventually.

Axel had an internal battle with himself, eating away at his insides. He could not fathom the feeling he was having. He was a nobody. Nobodies are not supposed to feel, to have that twisting feeling in their gut when their eyes meet another’s. He began to think about Xemnas being completely full of shit in his teachings about nobodies and their non-existence. The redhead snickered to himself, shrugging off the unpleasant yet blissful feeling he was having.

He was pulled from his inner thoughts as he heard Roxas’ quick footsteps, catching up to him. Roxas gazed up at Axel and could not see his face under his hood but could feel that mischievous smile behind the darkness.

He remembered the day he met Axel. Sitting in the library, alone and confused about his existence and strange visions he was having and suddenly, forgetting all of that when Axel smiled at him.

The two nobodies walked in silence for a bit, the rain spattering across the leather of their coats and their boots splashing in nearby puddles as they made their way through the labyrinth of alleys and streets.

Axel suddenly stopped and turned to face Roxas. All Roxas could see was Axel’s blazing eyes behind his hood. Axel reached up and slid Roxas’ hood away from his face. Roxas felt a thudding deep in his chest, confused and nervous. The rain bathed the blonde’s face, smoothing his hair against his skin as he stared up at Axel. A part of him wanted to look away quickly and continue their patrol, pretending this was not happening but another part of him kept him anchored to the street beneath him.

“Axel…” Roxas whispered. The thudding in his chest deafened him in time with the rain beating down on his shoulders and hair.

A loud crash sounded in a nearby alley, startling the couple and Axel turned and walked quickly towards the noise, a burst of flames appearing at his sides as his chakrams materialized in his hands. The flames were doused by the rain, creating a swirl of steam around the redhead as his eyes narrowed, annoyed but in a way, relieved that his feelings for Roxas were interrupted.

Axel rolled his eyes as he caught sight of a rather large portal opening up in the alley and shadowy creatures with blazing yellow eyes spilled forth. Roxas, being relieved that the cold sweat he had broken into was hidden by the rain, ran to Axel and stood next to him.

“What are they?” Roxas asked wide eyed.

“Heartless….puppets to the darkness” Axel smiled and flung his chakram through the growing crowd.

Blackened tendrils of darkness fluttered to the ground and disappeared into oblivion. Roxas willed the key blade into his grasp, gazing at the black weapon before slashing through a few charging beings. The beings sunk into the concrete and flew up from swirling portals to attack. One of them caught Roxas by surprise and pinned him to the ground. The blow knocked the key blade from Roxas’ grasp and it slid away from him across the slick concrete. Axel heard a thud and reeled around to see Roxas, overcome by heartless.

“Ahhh….Burn Baby!!” Axel screamed and the alley instantly lit up with roaring flames, burning away an alarming number of heartless. Roxas, still lying on the ground, closing his eyes tight against the light and the key blade found its way back into his grasp. The rain doused the surrounding flames once again and the two nobodies found each other once again and backed out of the alley. They stood in the clearing, back to back as the heartless surrounded them.

Determination flashed in Roxas’ eyes and suddenly, another key blade materialized into his other hand, giving him two, deadly weapons. Axel smirked at Roxas and an unspoken understanding passed between the two as they cried out and raced towards the wall of heartless closing in around them. They key blades slashing through countless numbers of beings and Roxas caught sight of a chakram flying past him every now and then, ripping a path in the hoard of darkness. Axel laughed as he set fires throughout the crowd, watching the steam rise with the darkness as the rain overpowered his element. The nobodies were a deadly duo and fought with the grace of assassins together as the numbers reduced to nothing.

Roxas stopped and could hear nothing but his harsh breathing as he stared up into the now cloudless sky, dumbfounded at the glittering red hearts, floating up into the heavens. Axel stood next to him and watched in awe at the beauty they had created in destroying the heartless. Axel turned and gazed at Roxas who was staring up into the sky with childlike amazement and smiled as he ruffled his wet hair. The blonde turned and looked at Axel and smiled widely in response.

“Nice hair!” Roxas laughed at the sight of Axel’s wild red spikes matted against his head and face. Axel shook the water from his hair and growled at Roxas. The blonde’s eyes widened as Axel postured for the chase and he took off running from the redhead, laughing the entire way. Axel was too fast for Roxas and shortly caught up to him, snatching his coat by the shoulder, causing them to trip over each other and fall to the ground. Roxas blinked and found himself on top of Axel in a puddle. He laughed nervously and Axel smiled at him He felt the redhead’s green eyes staring straight through him as his hands rested on the other man’s chest. His body rose and fell with Axel’s panting, still out of breath from battle and the chase. He unconsciously began to lean forward until he was face to face with Axel. His eyes widened when he received no protest from the redhead. Axel’s eyes began to close as he felt the faint brush of Roxas’ lips against his own…

“Number VIII, Number XIII…..”

Roxas jumped off of Axel quickly at the sound of their superior’s booming voice. Axel just continued to lay on the ground, shocked and more annoyed than ever. Roxas scrambled to his feet and stood before Xemnas. He turned and looked at Axel as he sighed and lifted himself from the puddle, a renewed soaking invading his body.

“I saw the heartless…impish fools” Xemnas stated flatly. “Excellent job in destroying them and freeing their captive hearts.” Xemnas smiled as the last of the hearts disappeared into the sky, knowing his plan was coming into place nicely. “You are making excellent progress, my key of destiny..” He gazed down at Roxas.

“Key of Destiny?” Roxas thought silently to himself but shrugged it off when he saw Xemnas approach Axel.

“It would be wise of you keep your hands to yourself, number VIII” the silver haired man whispered to Axel. The redhead only sneered at him and rolled his eyes. Xemnas shook his head at the defiant nobody and walked away slowly, disappearing into the darkness of a portal.

Axel looked at Roxas and flashed an evil grin. “I’m going to kick your ass!” the redhead shouted. Roxas’ eyes widened and he opened a portal for himself and disappeared into it with Axel hot on his heels.

Roxas emerged from his pathway to find himself in the middle of the center stage of the battle room he had been in the day he met Axel. He had meant to emerge in his chambers but was still learning to navigate his way through the darkness.

“Oh so it’s a fight you want huh!?”

Roxas reeled around to see Axel who had followed in shortly behind him, already summoning his chakrams to his sides. Roxas swallowed hard and then laughed. He drew the key blades out and stuck his tongue out at Axel.

Axel grinned wickedly and charged at Roxas.

Demyx strolled through the halls, plucking at his sitar and humming to himself when he heard the commotion. He perked his ears and peeked into the room, watching Axel beat Roxas playfully with his chakram and fists. Demyx smiled and walked in, taking a seat to watch the action. Not long after Demyx entered, Xaldin and Xigbar entered, ready for a mock battle of their own but upon seeing there was already something going on, they growled and sat in the audience impatiently, tapping their weapons against their knees. Soon enough, the entire organization, minus their superior, Saix and Vexen, was sitting and watching the playful battle between Axel and Roxas.

Axel set the stage ablaze as before in their first battle together and Roxas knew what was coming. He leapt into the air away from the flames and Axel snatched him by his wrist and flung him against the stage. With the wind knocked from his lungs, Roxas gasped and tried to pick himself up from that last blow but failed as Axel straddled him, slamming his chakrams on either side of Roxas’ head, the spikes cracking the marble floor beneath them and mere inches from Roxas’ temples.

The watching members of the organization gasped at the force behind Axel’s actions and stared in amazement as the redhead leaned in face to face with Roxas.

Roxas’ eyes went wide in a mild panic and he struggled beneath the other man’s grasp. Axel grinned widely at him. He could feel the heat from Axel’s breath against his cheek and his harsh breathing from their battle against his chest. He glanced at the chakrams implanted onto the floor on either side of his head and noticed the audience they had attracted. He swallowed hard as he turned his attention back to the psychotic redhead above him.

Axel could not take it anymore. He had to have Roxas. He could not even remember how long it had been since he had the twisting feeling in his gut and the thudding in his chest every time he was around Roxas. He had never felt anything like it before and he was not about to let it wriggle away from his grasp.

The thudding in Roxas’ chest returned to him suddenly and deafened him behind the crackling of the flames on the stage and the light cheering of their watching crowd. He made one last attempt at wiggling out of Axel’s forceful hold and failed as Axel’s lips came crashing down against his.

The room fell silent. The crowd stopped cheering. The flames dissipated into the floor, leaving charred black stains against the marble. All Roxas could hear was the intense crushing in his chest as Axel’s tongue made its way across his lips. His body tensed but quickly fell limp as something inside him forced him to submit and let Axel take what he wanted. Roxas closed his eyes and grasped the sleeves of Axel’s coat harshly as he allowed the redhead to caress his mouth. He slipped his own tongue into Axel’s mouth in reply, kissing the other man gently and once the redhead bit down on his tongue playfully, the kiss deepened. A soft moan escaped Axel’s lips at his own surprise of Roxas’ actions in response to his unexpected gesture.

Their fellow organization members watched in complete shock as Axel, their most fierce and defiant member dominated the blonde with his mouth. Demyx blushed fiercely and looked away, not sure how to react to the…beautiful sight before him. He bit his lip and rushed out of the room quickly.

“Bloody hell…” Luxord laughed and he twirled his cards in his hands, leaving the room and continuing to laugh all the way. Xaldin and Xigbar sneered and realized their turn for battle would have to wait and they followed Luxord, glaring and frustrated. Saix and Vexen, who had not seen the battle noticed the other members pouring from the stage room with odd expressions on their faces, looked into the room as they walked by and stopped in their tracks and gawked as they saw Roxas lacing his fingers through Axel’s fiery spikes. Disgusted, they continued on their walk, intending on informing the superior of this act.

Axel pulled away from Roxas’ lips for a breath of air and gazed into the wide, sapphire eyes staring up at him in utter shock. He smirked and dislodged his chakrams from the floor, summoning them away. Roxas was speechless and all he could do was grasp Axel by the collar of his coat and jerk him down for another heated kiss.

He did not want the warmth he felt every time their lips touched to leave him….

Ever.
