Chapter One

The Situation at Hand

----------

Seven years had passed since the day that Belle had waited in the same spot in the woods for Dilan to visit with her. But after a couple of hours of waiting, Belle finally walked to his house. She hesitated at first, because she didn’t want to deal with Gaston if he were home, but finally knocked on the door. Fortunately, Dilan’s father answered the door. She asked about the whereabouts of Dilan, but the father told her that he had been killed in a vicious bear attack earlier in the day. But what disturbed Belle the most about the statement was the lack of emotion in the father’s voice. It was almost as if he were speaking in an every conversation. With a sad expression on her face, she walked away from the house.

She had only known the boy for a day, but he was the only person in the village that tried to get to know her. Even if she did not shed a tear, she felt a little sinking feeling in her hearts, as she realized that besides her father, she was all alone in the village. However, Belle was an expert at hiding her pain, as she did not want her father to worry about her. Instead, she spent even more time than usual indulging herself into book after book.

As she grew into a full grown adult, more and more villagers took notice of her beauty and poise. Even if she did not realize it, the villagers would even break into song at her very presence. She did not have very many suitors though, because many found her weird for spending all of her time reading, instead of the usual activities such as cooking or sewing. Much to Belle’s chagrin, however, Gaston didn’t seem to mind that and instead was enamored by her beauty. He would try constantly to win over her affection, but Belle could still not stand how self-absorbed the man was.

Her father struggled to make ends meet for his daughter and for himself, but as an inventor, it was very difficult. Belle supported him every way that she could, and was absolutely delighted to find that he had finally successfully completed a contraption that could finally bring some money into the house. Excitedly, she encouraged her father to bring it to the fair, so that he could fetch a high price for it. Little did she know that doing so would cause a major effect on the fate of her very life.

Her father apparently took a wrong turn and ended up in what appeared to be an abandoned castle. However, he found that it wasn’t abandoned at all as objects that he had originally thought to be inanimate suddenly started talking to him. He was a little weirded out at first, but his confusion soon turned to fascination as he settled himself within the castle walls. He, however, did not get very much time at all to relax as he was confronted by a monstrous-looking beast. No matter how much he pleaded with the Beast, Belle’s father was accused of trespassing and was thrown into the dungeon.

Luckily, the father’s horse was spared, and he managed to find his way back to Belle. Knowing that something was very wrong, Belle went on the back of the worse and was brought the Beast’s Castle. She entered, and was immediately was fascinated by the talking objects, but did not waste any time in finding her father in the holding cells. The reunion did not last long though, as Beast soon entered the scene. He was angered at the site of the woman in the castle, but somewhat cooled down as she offered to switch places with her father. Her father objected to the proposal, but the deal was already made, and he was forced to leave the castle.

Belle was devastated that she would never see her father or read another book again, and despite her trying to be strong all of her life, she could not help but spend her first couple of hours in a sobbing mess. Beast invited her to dinner, but Belle declined, as she was still upset over her situation. But she cheered up after she explored the castle and experienced a musical, courtesy of several household objects. But she was brought down once again as she tried to explore more of the castle and was confronted by a very furious Beast.

At that point, she could not take his temper any more. She fled the castle, not minding the fact that she had broken her promise. As she got outside though, she was attacked by several wolves. She tried to flee, but the wolves were persistent in their chase. Just when she thought she was cornered though, she was surprised to see Beast appear in front of her, followed by him fending off every single wolf. It was then when Belle thought that maybe the Beast wasn’t nearly as vicious as he seemed, and went back with him to the castle.

After that day, things started to look up. Belle developed a friendship with the Beast, and in turn, Beast brought her to the largest library that she had ever laid eyes on. Belle started to appreciate her new living situation, comparing it to stories that she had read before. She was kidnapped by Maleficent one day, as she found that she was one of the Princesses of Heart, and was a key to what was called Kingdom Hearts. However, with the assistance of Sora, Donald, and Goofy, she was rescued by Beast and returned to the castle.

Her freedom was limited after that incident, however. She was not allowed outside of her room without someone to supervise her, in fear that she may be kidnapped yet again. Belle was disappointed, but she thought that maybe Beast would change his opinion over time. But day after day, she found herself trapped in her room. Luckily, she was given an endless supply of books to read, and she was constantly visited by objects such as Lumiere and Mrs. Potts, but she would much rather be able to explore the castle walls by herself from time to time.

But if there was one thing that Belle had an endless supply of, it was hope. Even if she was never granted a chance to see her father or to have some sort of freedom, she held on to her hope that things would get better. Although it seemed as if that wish was a very far-fetched one at the time. It didn’t matter though; Belle knew that if she did not have hope, there was not a reason to live.

That alone was what kept her alive every day.

Meanwhile, in a realm known simply as The World that Never Was, a group of seven figures dressed in black robes each sat on a throne decorated by what was decided as the official sign of a Nobody, the creatures surrounded by darkness who also lacked a heart. Unlike regular Nobodies though, the Nobodies in the room resembled actual humans. These beings were known as the Organization XIII. However, due to unfortunate circumstances, the former group of thirteen was now limited to seven.

Xemnas, the leader of the Organization XIII, however was still continuing his plans to obtain Kingdom Hearts, so that the remaining seven members may be granted their hearts back and once again become complete beings. On the present day, the seven members gathered so that they may be assigned their tasks to achieve their ultimate goal. Xigbar had already grudgingly accepted to be in charge of operations in the Land of Dragons, so now Xemnas went on to explain the situation in Beast’s Castle.

Apparently, the Beast was someone who had aided in the battle to stop Xeonhart’s Heartless from obtaining Kingdom Hearts before, and that alone was enough to draw concern. But Xemnas noted that his strength was matched by very few in the universe and he would be a tremendous asset to the Organization if he were turned into a Heartless, therefore creating a Nobody, as the Organization XIII had the power to control all lesser Nobodies. Xemnas also noted that the best way to manipulate Beast was through a woman he held very dear to him, Belle.

A picture of the woman appeared in front of everyone. In the throne directly left to Xemnas, was Xaldin, number three in the Organization. He had lost track since the day he had agreed to join Xeonhart’s journey into darkness, when he was still known as Dilan, and in turn lost his heart. So now he was left without his memories of the past as well as losing everything associated with his heart. Even if the hearts of a thousand people were required to bring Kingdom Hearts to them, Xaldin did not care. He only longed for his heart back, so that once again he could be somebody.

As he looked at the display of the woman though, Xaldin had a sudden flash come across his senses. Even if he did not know what sensation had just passed through him, he wondered if it was what people called “nostalgia”. Whatever it was, he definitely never experienced it since his first memory of waking up at Hallow Bastion. So as Xemnas asked for volunteers to be in charge of securing Beast’s Castle, Xaldin offered to do with without a single moment of hesitation.

Xemnas seemed surprised at the quick response, but shrugged it off and assigned Xaldin to Beast’s Castle. Shortly afterwards, Xaldin got up off of his throne and walked out of the room. He did not know what he had experienced as a cause of the woman’s photograph, but he was certain that he had to meet that woman, Belle. Maybe if he was lucky, he might even find something out about his past. Either way though, he had to find a way to drive that Beast into darkness, in order to become complete again.

After all, what was the point of living if you lacked a heart?

----------

Not long after the meeting, Xaldin stood in front of the gates of the massive castle. Illuminated by only the light from the moon, Xaldin looked up at the towers of the castle with his hands behind his back. He allowed a wide grin to come across his face as he surveyed the area. It was funny how peaceful the castle looked at the current moment. The phrase “The calm before the storm,” suited this moment of time very well. But if he were to drive Beast to the darkness, he sure as hell wasn’t going to be peaceful. Oh no.

He would break Beast, no matter what course of action he had to take. Every one had their mental limit; Xaldin just had to find what exactly would shatter that. Xaldin grinned again as he formed a dark portal around himself and disappeared.

“Soon, I shall cause this castle to be in shambles.” His voice trailed out in the night. “It’s only a matter of time.”

Chapter End/Author’s Comments

----------

Yeah, this was kind of another prologue chapter, but I want anyone who is unfamiliar with Beauty and the Beast and/or Kingdom Hearts to understand the complete story. I also wanted to transition from Beauty and the Beast to the first Kingdom Hearts game to Kingdom Hearts 2. And as the title of this chapter indicates, I wanted to show the “Situation at Hand”. I promise that the next chapter will actually get this story moving (and in turn will be a lot more fun for me to write). Please review and let me know what you think. And yes, constructive criticism is very much appreciated!
