Harley: Yo. Funk Man. You’re entitled to your opinion. But this story isn’t over until it’s over. And anyway, happy endings suck. If you don’t like it, don’t read it any more. You don’t know what you’re missing. Oh, and Heart, and BZLF, we’re glad you like it.

Froggy: This is such a short chapter, so we’re putting up two. But that’s something that happens very rarely, not because of Funk Man.

Harley: Anyway, putting up chapters more regularly would mean we might fall behind. We like to be a few chapters ahead.

Chapter Two: Interlude

After thanking Espio for his help on the ARK, Shadow left the chameleon and walked home, taking the time to think about all that had happened. Discovering that he had two siblings had been a shock in itself. Finding that one was a complete psycho and the other his unwilling servant designed specifically to defeat Shadow was nigh-on-overwhelming.

And then there were Mirage's words... 'Forget about family'. What did she know about Ashura that he did not? Why was she so afraid that she would ask him to kill her to get to Ashura? He didn't know, but he found himself worrying about his newfound ‘sister’. He couldn't chaos control back to them, not that far, not without an emerald. All he could do was just hope.

He arrived in front of his home, and the black hedgehog knocked on the door, just wanting to see Amy again. He could use her comforting presence.

Amy opened the door. She smiled as soon as she saw it was Shadow, "Hey, how'd it go..." she saw his face, "Oh, not good huh?"

Shadow rushed in and hugged Amy tightly. Detaching from her, he walked into the living room and took a seat on the couch, "It wasn't what I expected..."

Amy put Eclipse to bed, then sat next to Shadow, wrapping one arm around his shoulders, "Go on... tell me about it."

"I found the experiments, Amy. Mirage and Ashura. I freed them before GUN got to them,” he said, "But now I'm not so sure it was such a good idea. The hedgehog, Ashura, is insane. And Mirage... Gerald designed her specifically to defeat me."

Amy frowned, "So... didn't you get any answers?"

Shadow closed his eyes and shook his head, "All I did was unleash more trouble."

"But wait... you have other family?" Amy asked, "How can that be? You're... you know... an experiment."

"There apparently were genetic donors involved. Ashura and I turned out more hedgehog. Mirage turned out more feline." Shadow sighed. "Figures that tampering with my past would result in more trouble. I should have let GUN have them. ...Ashura, at least."

"What about Mirage?" Amy asked.

Shadow replied, "She didn't seem so bad. She wasn't intentionally malicious and her powers are only a real danger to me. She was afraid..."

"Of what?" Amy asked.

"Ashura, the green hedgehog. Said something about him having mind control powers. I haven't seen an example of them, but he certainly can use Chaos Control!" Shadow growled, "He stole my Emerald."

"Ah," Amy nodded, "So... how did you get back here?"

"He sent me here with my own damn Chaos Emerald!" Shadow growled, fuming. It was his Emerald! The green one! Ashura had no right to it...

"Where are they now?" Amy asked him.

Shadow stood up and walked to the window, looking out. "...They could be anywhere."

Amy walked over to him and put her hand on his shoulder, "They'll turn up," she said gently, "Nobody ever wants just one Chaos Emerald, they have to have them all. So they'll be looking for the Chaos Emeralds, right?"

"Yes. Ashura must want the chaos emeralds. I just don't know why." Shadow looked down, a troubled look on his face. "Whatever the reason, it can't be good."

"It's probably just world domination or something," Amy took Shadow in her arms, "There's no point worrying. Come on, I'm having trouble getting Eclipse to sleep... why don't you try?"

Shadow nodded and followed Amy over to their child. Eclipse gurgled quietly, looking up at Shadow with wide eyes.

Shadow smiled down at his son. Closing his eyes, he reached and caressed the baby's head, "What is troubling you, Eclipse? You have nothing to worry about. I will always keep you safe."

Eclipse gurgled again and took Shadow's finger in one hand. Amy smiled. Then she remembered something that hadn't sunk in earlier, "Wait - you said one of your parents was a cat?"

Shadow's crimson eyes open and the hedgehog smirked. "I can purr, remember?"

"Well, yeah..." Amy looked down at Eclipse, "I wonder how much cat there is in Eclipse."

"Probably very little," Shadow admitted, looking down at the baby hedgehog. Eclipse seemed to be calming down, comforted by his father's presence. Shadow wondered just how much of Ashura was in his son...

“We need to find them,” he said finally.

Ashura looked around at the amazing scenery. Not that the scenery was interesting to him right now. This Island was called Westside Island, and it seemed to move randomly around the ocean, making it even harder to trace.

It had belonged to some previous despot, and while most of the robots had been destroyed, the majority of the deadly and numerous traps were in excellent working order. Bottomless pits and spikes and trapdoors… it would only need a few small alterations to be absolutely perfect for his requirements.

As he walked, frost formed on the grass under his feet, then melted in the warmth of the sunlight.

Of course, there was Mirage’s little truancy to deal with. Up on the ARK she had run away from him and made it into an escape pod, sending herself down to Earth. He had no idea where she was - but it wouldn’t take long to find out. Mirage, like Shadow, distorted the energies of the world around her. Shadow emanated Chaos Energy, while Mirage constantly drained it, even when she wasn’t trying. She’d be easy enough to track.

He chuckled. Even without her powers, Mirage would be easy to track anyway. She seemed to find it impossible to not cause trouble.

She was vital for the success of his plot. He just hoped that he could retrieve her before she could start thinking for herself again.

Harley: Interlude over. Pretty damn dull, huh? Well don’t worry, you won’t have to wait a week this time. Chapter Three is already up, so go to it right bloody now!

Froggy: Who is Ashura? Or, more accurately, WHAT is he? Find out later!

Harley: Much, much later.
