Chapter Ni

A Scientist held a tray in one arm, the other in a cast. He stopped before two GUN Soldiers guarding a steel door. “How’s the arm Doc?” one asked and the Scientist scowled “This is the third time he broke it.”

He handed the tray to the Soldier and went back up the hall he came. One of the Soldiers opens a slot and peered into the small room. The occupant sat next to the bed, knees drawn, just staring at the wall before him.

“Hey little hedgie, your meal’s here.” The one with the tray said and shoved it through the food slot.

Pressing his forehead to his knees, Shadow sighed.

6 months ago, he had awoken to find himself battered, bleeding and a bit brunt in a small crater with no memory of what happen. He had black out and regain consciousness to find 6 scientists looking at him. Within a span of two weeks, all his injuries healed but sadly, he still couldn’t remember anything. He would gain fragments of a memory every now and then but not enough for him to go by.

The only thing the Scientist told him was that his name is “Shadow” for the first month, they treated him well and he believed he could trust them… he was wrong.

They began running tests and experiments on him, painful ones.

He endures those… but when those GUN bastards tortured him for no reason. As the months went by Shadow became more violent and tried to escape, but fail every time.

A noise startled Shadow, looking at the door he saw a pair of eyes looking in “Not hungry pretty eyes?” mock the Soldier.

Shadow narrowed his red eyes at him. The Soldier narrowed his eyes back. They spent 30 seconds glaring at each other, before the Soldier snorted in disgust and slid the slot’s door close.

Sighing again, Shadow cautiously crawled to the tray. He winced and looked down at his bound legs. After his twelfth escape attempt, the head Scientist thought it was best to bind his legs to prevent anymore escape attempts. The binds would only be removed when they were going to run more tests and experiments on him but they would be replaced with cuffs that sent large amount of electric currents up his body.

Looking at the door, he grabbed the tray and dragged it back to his spot. Picking through the food on the tray, knowing they drugged something. After severely injuring many Soldiers and Scientists, they thought it was best to drug his meal instead of sticking a needle into him, sometimes reviving him when they want to test his strength or speed.

Holding a bit of meat to his face he murmured “To bad I can’t taste the drug…” he popped it in his mouth.

Once he ate most of the food and finished the drink, Shadow shoved the tray back at the door. The tray hit the door noisily. The Soldier reached inside and removes the tray.

Shadow’s vision swam as his head began to fall forward. He shook his head vigorously, trying to stay awake.

//Dammit. I wish I knew where they put the damn drug in…//

He knew he was loosing to the drug, a hopeless battle. He fell unconscious, his back press to the wall, head resting against the bed.

The door swung open, the two GUN Soldiers went in, a gun out in case the hedgehog was faking. Scientist calmly walked and watched as one tapped his boot against the hedgehog’s bare feet. When Shadow didn’t move, the Soldier turned and nodded to the other “Sleeping like a baby.” The other Soldier said with a nasty gleam in his eyes.

“Please pick him up.” Order the Scientist.

Both Soldiers shoulder their gun and hauled the sleeping hedgehog to his feet. The Scientist turn, exit the tiny cell, the two Soldiers dragging the limp hedgehog with them.

Three hours later, Shadow groan as he was dumped on the bed, he groggily opens his eyes as he heard the door to his room close. Shadow blink a few time, weakly sat up. He winced and clutched his abdomen. Ears flattening and hissing shapely, he tenderly traced a finger, feeling for any oddness.

Sighing, he fell back and closed his eyes. How much he wanted t get out of here, how much he wanted to be free, how much he wanted to remember his past… how much he wanted someone to be there for him.

Shadow had fallen asleep again and was dreaming of a girl with lovely blonde hair, wearing a blue dress. She was smiling at him. He like that smile, it made him feel safe and warm, he wanted to stay in that dream.

Unfortunately, Shadow was startled out of his dream by someone pulling him off the bed. He landed painfully on the hard cold floor, banging his chin into it. The black hedgehog tried to sit up, only to cry out when a boot shot into his ribs. Clenching his teeth, he held his aching side. He felt fingers curl into his spine. “Ah!” he screamed as he felt that hand tightly and painfully pulled his head back, ripping some quills out. Pain screamed through his nerves as his attacker slammed his face into the floor, his nose crunched and he felt blood flow from his broken nose and tasted some flow down his throat.

He heard laughter and looked up through tears at three soldiers looking down at him. He felt the hand pull away from his spine… only to be replaced with a foot pressing his face into his blood. Another Soldier pressed his heel onto his wrist. Shadow winced and dug his nails into the hard floor. Glaring up at them, the last Soldier bends in front of him and took a finger in his hand.

Rubbing Shadow’s finger in his hand, the Soldier began talking calmly to him “You know hedgehog, we can never understand why the Scientist wants to keep you alive and experiment on you. And we were told not to kill you…” He looked into Shadow’s eyes.

Shadow didn’t like the look he gave him.

“But we never agreed not to torture you.” He concluded and bent Shadow’s finger back.

Tears seared his eyes. Shadow clamped his teeth tight, refusing to scream, refusing to give them pleasure in his torment. He felt his finger snap and he screamed.

One hour later, the last Soldier leaving shut the door behind him.

Shadow sat near the bed, cradling his arm, the Soldier broke all his fingers and dislocated his shoulder and broke his forearm. His nose had stopped bleeding and he knew his broken bones would heal, but his arm wouldn’t stop shaking.
Shadow rolled up a bit of the sheet on his bed and clamped it between his teeth. Breathing heavily, he grasped a finger, squeezing his eyes tightly, he pulled and the sheet muffled his screams.

It took him 5 painful minutes to fix his fingers and to fix his shoulder, pulling himself back on the bed, his mind plotted a way to escape and he’d do anything to escape… even if it means killing all the humans to achieve it.

One week later, Shadow’s broken bones were healed and he set out his plan. He waited ‘patiently’ for his meal.

“Here you go hedgie.” The Soldier said as he shoves the food in.

Shadow looked up and saw the other Soldier staring into his cell, the Soldier was suspicious, Shadow could tell. Pretending to be cautious, he grabbed the tray and brought to his usual spot again, pick up a piece of food, toss it back on his tray, pick up another, looked at it and placed it in his mouth.

He looked at the Soldier, slowly chewing and swallowing, he picked up another one and placed it in his mouth. The Solider slid the slot close as Shadow was picking the cup up. He spat the chewed up food into it, pick random food off the tray and stuffed them in his pillow case. He seized the cup, crawled over to the toilet, dipped the cup into it and emptied its content. He flushed and chances a glance at the door, hoping they were suspicious, he breathe in relief that they didn’t peek in.

Wiping the cup dry on the sheet, he wondered to himself why he didn’t do this long ago. //because you been too drugged and weak.// a voice answered.

He waited for 5 minutes before shoving the tray at the door. He watched as one of the Soldiers removed it and waited 2 minutes before pretending to sleep.

Shadow’s slow breathing didn’t falter as the door open and the Soldiers came in. He didn’t twitch as one of them tapped him with his boot. He mentally grinned as they seized him and dragged him out of the room.

When Shadow was sure that they were far from his cell. He dug his bound feet into the floor, catching both Soldiers by surprise. He punched the Soldier on his right in the stomach and as the Soldier doubled over clutching his stomach, Shadow used him to jump and kick the other with his bound feet.

The kicked broke the Soldier’s nose, he stumble, tripped and rammed his head against the floor. Shadow landed and swung his arms down on the other Soldier’s head. One daze and the other knocked out. Shadow hopped over to the daze GUN and searches his pocket to find a key to remove the binds on his ankle.

His eyes lit up when he found one and freed his ankles. Looking up, he saw the shocked Scientist pulling out a communicator.

Shadow turned and bolted down the hall.

What seemed like eternity, Shadow finally stopped and looked down two corridors, he ran through random corridors and came to the conclusion that the Lab was one giant labyrinth. He heard footsteps coming from one of the corridor.

Looking around, Shadow spotted a door, he headed for it. As it slid open, he slipped in and pressed his back to the wall as the door slid shut. He heard the footsteps go by.

Sighing in relief, Shadow decided to wait to be safe. Looking into the glow by the computer, he noticed a glove hanging off the table. Curious, Shadow walked over to it and picked it up. Turning it in hand, he wondered what these Scientists want with a pair of small gloves. He slipped them on.

Flexing his gloved fingers, Shadow couldn’t help but feel he done this before. Looking at the shoes, he plucked them off the table, sat down, pulled the socks on and then the shoes.

Getting up, he looked down at his feet, feeling the shoes fit. “Hmm.”

The door slid open, Shadow looked down both halls and ran for the right corridor. Shadow looked down //I’m glad I found these shoes, at least I won’t cut my feet when I get out of here.//

He stopped and stared at the many soldiers and robots between him and the exit.

Shadow recognizes the GUN soldier that broke his bones, the soldier grinned at him, confident that GUN would take this black hedgehog without a fight. “Come quietly and I’m sure we won’t hurt you too much.”

Shadow narrowed his ruby eyes at the Soldier and bared his shape canines. Walking slowly towards them, the soldier wasn’t fazed “Give him a warning shot.” He ordered the soldier on his right. The soldier pointed his gun at Shadow, pulling the trigger, the shot rang through the air and nicked Shadow’s ear.

Shadow falter, feeling a bit of blood soak into his fur and trail down his face.

A low growl rumble from his throat as he broke out into a run.

“Sergeant! I want him alive! Do NOT, I repeat: do NOT kill him! Use force if you must but I him alive.”

The Sergeant gritted his teeth, he’ll make them pay for this. “Don’t kill him. I don’t care if you hurt him, just take the bastard down.”

They open fire on him. Shadow weaves through the bullets, a few hit his arms and a few graze his muzzle, arms, legs and abdomen. Ignoring the pain, he ripped through the GUN robots and attacked the soldiers. Shadow threw a punch at one, the soldier dodge and hit the ebony hedgehog in the head with the butt of his rifle.

Shadow took a step back as blood flow freely, he kicked the soldier’s knee, bringing him down and he kicked him in the jaw.

Shadow stood there panting, clutching his arm. The robots were destroyed and the soldiers lay unconscious as Shadow stood there bleeding.

He glared at the Sergeant and advance on.

The Sergeant was impress that this little badass was able to endure all that abuse and was still left standing. //This will be fun.// the Sergeant thought.

With a yell, Shadow threw a punch at him. Unfortunately, the Soldier moved to the side and rams the butt of his rifle into Shadow’s ribs. Ruby eyes widen as he felt the force crack a few of his ribs, causing him to stumble.

The Sergeant grinned and rams the gun into the ebony hedgehog’s back.

“Augh!” Shadow cried out as he fell forwards.

Shadow’s back throbbed and his ribs ached. His ears folded in pain, they twitched as he heard the GUN soldier laughed.

“This is what those Scientists prize in? He got knocked down by me. How pathetic.” Said the Sergeant.

Shadow opened his eyes and blinked, the exit was in front of him and it was open. Looking over his shoulder, he saw a few of the soldiers sitting up and the Sergeant was walking over him with cuffs in hand.

“Stay still and I promise you that you won’t get hurt anymore.” The Sergeant told him.

Shadow got to his feet and headed for the exit. He burst through the doors and tasted freedom… but he knew if it wouldn’t last long if he hung around there, so he made his way to the forests.

The Sergeant watched as the Scientists precious specimen headed for the forest. “Sir? What should we do?” a soldier asked, rubbing his head.

“Get someone suited into the Mecha, he’s injured so he won’t get too far...” he told the soldier.

The soldier gulped nervously “Wh-what if he destroys it?” the soldier asked.

The Sergeant glanced at him like he was stupid “If we see smoke or the Mecha doesn’t return with the unconscious hedgehog then send 5 Hunter, Beatle, Hornet and Hawk series.” He answered.

“Sir!” the soldier saluted and went off to do what he was ordered.

Shadow huffed and wheezed as he rested against a tree. He hissed as pain tore through his body. Wiping blood from his eyes.

His red eyes fixed on the setting sun, it was lovely.

The ground shook, Shadow turned and saw a Mecha stomping towards him. He groaned, he knew he couldn’t beat a Mecha with his injuries. Stepping away from the tree, exhausted and hurt, Shadow prepared to battle the Mecha.

Delta stared at the starry sky, smoking a cigarette. He made camp in a small clearing with a stream running by. The fire crackle, casting a dim glow on him, making him look orange. Though it was peaceful, his katana lay by his side, ready for any attack.

He took a drag from his cigarette.

A twig snapped. Grabbing his katana in his left hand, Delta sat up, right hand around the tsuka, ready to draw his sword.

A black hedgehog stumbles into the clearing. Delta blinked at him, he noticed the red stripes on his spines, arms, legs and around his eyes, as well as a white tuff of fur resting on his heaving chest. //What a unique hedgehog… his eyes are… beautiful.// Delta thought to himself.

Delta’s brows furrowed as he noticed the blood running down him in little rivulet.

Shadow stumbled and fell. Delta dropped his katana, ran and caught him. He looked down at the black hedgehog in his arms, watched as he coughed and wince.

Delta’s head snap back to where the black hedgehog stumbled from and saw 20 robots appear.

He blinked golden eyes at them and looked down at the black hedgehog, which had his eyes slightly open and were staring up at him.

One robot spoke “ We have you surrounded. Give up the hedgehog and we will leave you alone.”

Blowing smoke out his nose he asked through his cigarette “What’d you do to get that many robots after you?”

Shadow continued to breathe heavily, tried to speak and ended up coughing. “I repeat: We have you surrounded. Give up the hedgehog and we will leave you alone.”

Delta carried Shadow to his make-shift bed and lay him down on it “You’re bluffing.” He told the robot as he picks up his katana.

Delta looks at the robots, inhaling his cigarette. “We’ll open fire.” Warn the robot. The series minus the Hornets brought their guns up.

Delta rolled his head, cracking his neck “To get to him… you have to get through me.”

The Hunter, Beatle and Hawk series open fire.

The bullets whiz towards him and hit an invisible barrier. They continue firing as if hoping their bullets would get through. Delta smirked, this was child’s play.

Shadow groan and despite blood trailing from the wound on his forehead and into his eye, he was amaze to see the bullets reflect off a barrier, he could see them hit it. A bullet ricochets off the barrier and hit a Hornet series. It exploded, taking 2 other Hornets, 1 Hawk and 2 Beatle series with it. The firing stopped.

Exhaling and throwing the cigarette butt into the fire, Delta unsheathes his katana. Tsuka in both hands, he held the katana slightly forward with the kissaki pointed at one of the Hunter series.

It brought its guns up again and Delta ran towards it.

He made a diagonal cut from the upper left to the lower right. Delta move back as it exploded. He slashed at another, it explode, taking 2 Hawk series. A hornet shot two missiles at him, then Delta slashed one in half, both crashed into trees and imploded.

Shadow had to shut his eyes as the missiles exploded. He squints and saw that the white hedgehog batted the other back at the Hornet.

Delta held an arm to his face, from the flying debris and from the foul smoke stinging his nose, trench coat whipping behind him. //hmm, 6 of those… 1… those 3 and that 1… 11 down… and 9 remaining.// Delta thought as more guns train on him. Looking around, Delta found himself surrounded by the 3 remaining Hunter series, 1 Hornet series and 2 Hawk series.

Making a sigh of frustration, Delta pulled out his pack of cigarettes, took one in his mouth “You know,” he began as he return the pack to his pocket and pulled out his silver lighter “if I was you, I would of take the ebony hedgehog during the explosions… hell I would do it when I was slicing the other robots up.”

He lit the cigarette, close the lighter shut and put it back. Delta inhaled the smoke, pulled the cigarette away and blew the smoke out. “You, just made it easy…” He concentrated on creating another barrier around him.

Turning to his right, Delta slashed one Hunter series, he step back, slashed the Hawk series and impaled the Hunter before him. Removing the toshin from the Hunter and jumping back, the Series exploded. Sharp shards of metal reflecting off the barrier, he spun and cut with a diagonal cut from the upper right to the lower left and slashed again, lower left to upper right the Hornet series before him, he turn and cuts the Hawk series and did it again to the last Hunter series.

The last three remaining Beatle series flew off.

Delta held his katana at arm’s length, with the toshin curved to let the oil drip off it before sheathing it.

He turned to see the black hedgehog had passed out.

The three Beatles made it back to the Lab, to the Sergeant annoyance. “I take that it was not a success?” the Head Scientist asked.

“He couldn’t have defeated them… not with those injuries.” He said.

The Scientist went over to the Series, pushed a button on each and removed a disc. “We shall see Sergeant.”

The Scientist had loaded the three Beatle Series memory file onto three separate computers. They watched in awe as the white hedgehog beat the Series.

“That is one strong bastard.” The Sergeant commented.

“Indeed.” The Scientist agreed. “Sergeant, I want you and a few of your best to capture both hedgehogs.”

“Both?” the Sergeant inquire.

“See how those bullets don’t touch him? And there, how he didn’t get hurt in the explosion? It’s an interesting talent to put up a barrier. And his strength and speed almost matches to Shadow’s.”

The Sergeant rubbed his chin as he watched the screen again. “I do want to fight him in combat… that style is intriguing.”

“Yes, I believe that is a Japanese fighting style known as ‘battou jitsu’ the hedgehog was either trained as a Samurai or is a Ronin. At any rate, if you want to do combat with the hedgehog, do so but don’t kill him.” The Scientist limped out.

The Sergeant watched closely as the white hedgehog slash the Hunter Series. He licked his lips, oh yes… fun indeed.

Shadow passed out as he watched the other hedgehog’s trench coat whip around him.

He moaned in his dreamless sleep, waking up once to something wet and cool running down his face. His eyes twitched but refuse to open.

He felt something hover to his lips, he thrashed, thinking it’s one of the Scientist trying to feed him something. A hand caresses his muzzle soothingly, Shadow relaxes to that hand, it was caring and concern.

He sighs and allows the person bring the thing to his lips and gulped the cool water and found it was refreshing as it went down his parch throat. Sighing, he fell back to sleep.

Delta put his cup down and sighed. “What did they do to you?” he wondered. He brushed his hand along his muzzle. He scratched his head “What in jigoku am I going to do?”

A crow cawed, rousing Shadow from his sleep. He opens his red eyes and blinked the sleep away. He tries sitting up only to wince in pain and had no choice but to lay back down.

Shadow’s ears picked up a sound, he turned his head and saw the white hedgehog using a stone to grind some plants into another rock, turning the plants into some sort of paste. Shadow inhaled sharply and started coughing. He watched as he turned to him and Shadow was smitten by his golden eyes.

Shadow was downright confuse as he recall memories of seeing yellow eyes and amber eyes before… but never in his life has he seen golden eyes like these.

Delta walked over to the ebony hedgehog with the rock carrying the ground plant on it. He sat it down and brushes a hand along Shadow’s forehead “How do you feel?” he asked.

Shadow pulled his gaze away from his eyes “Like I had the crap beat out of me.” He answered.

“I wouldn’t be surprise.” Delta replied undoing a bandage around Shadow’s arm “You have been out for 2 days, you lost quite a bit of blood and three of your ribs are broken.” He dipped two fingers into the paste and rubbed it over the wounds.

Shadow wince “2 days?” he asked through clenched teeth.

Delta nodded “Hai.” He wrapped the arm with some new bandage “You have one amazing healing factor. Most of these wounds are healing nicely and the cuts are nothing but scratches now and the bruises faded.”

Shadow sighed “Normally it would take me one week for my body to heal my wounds… and depending on how bad, another week or 2 for my bones to heal.” He looked at the clear sky “I think… whatever those plants you’re using are speeding it up.” Shadow held his arms.

Nodding, Delta took out a cigarette and placed it between his lips “Hmm, so is there… a reason those robots chased you?” Delta didn’t mean to pry.

“…” Shadow dug his yet again bare fingers into his arms.

Delta pulled his hands away from his arms and them in his own “Sumimasen… I didn’t mean to pry into your life… I’m sorry.” He said embarrass.

“It’s ok… I just don’t want to go back there… never…”

Ruby eyes looked up into golden eyes “Can I… join you?” asks Shadow.

Those lovely golden eyes blinked and Delta asks dumbfounded “Join me… on my travels?” Shadow nodded.

Casting his eyes down, he added “Unless… it’s a problem…”

Delta vigorously shook his head “No, it’s not a problem. My name is Delta by the way, what’s yours?”

Shadow felt embarrass and looked away “I… don’t remember much about my past… the only thing I was told… and remember is that my name is Shadow.”

Delta tried that name in his head //Shadow… Shadow, it’s a nice name and it fits him.//

“By the way, thank you.” Shadow said shyly and blushes.

Delta smiled at him, but he knew he was in trouble by the fact that his stomach tightens and a voice obviously stated ‘You’re screwed when he finds out.’ to him.

//… shit…//

Although I have lost this chapter when my dad’s computer crashed years ago, I know that this chapter is longer than the old one. And I am rather glad for those battou jitsu lessons I’m taking, it helps with my Delta… the problem is I don’t remember their names ^^;

Tsuka – the handle
Kissaki – the point of the sword
Toshin – the blade
Jigoku – hell
Sumimasen – can either mean “I am sorry.” Or “Excuse me.”
