17:30 Langley, Virginia

February 28, 1999

She has been sitting in the same room for many months, how many she doesn’t know. The walls are metallic gray, there are no windows or mirrors anywhere. The door has a sliding visor that allows people to look in on her, and a flap at the bottom where they slide her meals through. Sherry Birkin has been in this room since the men who Leon and she thought were government agents brought her to this place.

For a twelve year old girl, Sherry has managed not to tell the people asking the questions anything. She has long since stopped wondering why they keep asking for answers that she doesn’t know. Until recently she was not aware that her parents were working on something called the “G-Virus”. She wasn’t even aware of its existence until the day Claire told her that it was in her pendant. After the incident at Raccoon City, Claire, the girl that had helped Sherry escape the city, had been given a lead on her missing brother.

Leon and Sherry told Claire to go after him. Shortly after Leon had been deceived into surrendering custody of her. Leon didn’t want to, but at the time even Sherry was convinced of the “agents” sincerity. Immediately after her abduction, she was taken to meet a strange man. He was very tall, especially to her, blonde hair, and dark glasses. If Sherry hadn’t known better, she could have sworn something red was shinning though his glasses. The man didn’t tell her his name, he just looked her over, told her she was her father’s daughter, then chuckled as he left. She though someone had called him Wisker, or Wester, she wasn’t sure.

As Sherry stared at the wall she heard numerous voices in the hallway. “Must be dinner time.” She thought to herself. The only times people passed by this area was prior to her meal time. Sherry just sat still, sinking into despair. She hated this… she hated being locked up. She hated the isolation. She prayed that either Claire, or Leon would find her soon. After the people had departed Sherry heard single foot steps approaching. “Dinner Time,” she thought to herself. A tray with very unappetizing food was slid into her room. Sherry walked over, picked up the tray, sat down and proceeded to force the food down her throat.

19:00 Langley, Virginia

February 28, 1999

When she’d cleaned off her tray Sherry looked at her reflection in the metal. Her blonde hair and grown down to her shoulders. It was filthy, and unkept, but that is what happens when you only take showers once a week and are not give hygiene products. Sherry was not due to shower again for another two days. While she didn’t have a way to accurately keep time she managed to keep track of shower time by count the number of times she ate.

Sherry was sitting on her cot against the wall when she suddenly felt the building she was in shake. She thought it was her imagination, in a situation like this she had previously had several vivid dreams that she thought were real until she was shocked back into reality. Sherry would have assumed this was the case as well until she heard an alarm claxon sounding. She heard heavy boots running down the hall in the direction most people go when meal time is over.

A few moments afterwards she heard the distinct sounds of gunfire. Surviving Raccoon City, Sherry had heard many different types of weapons firing. The bullets were firing continuously at a target. She heard cries coming from men as the gunfire appeared to get closer. Finally there was a long burst right outside her door. It was then that Sherry heard the electronic lock to her door activate. The door was flung open and a guard landed on the floor. He was bleeding profusely from his right arm and left leg. Sherry looked up and could see smoke emanating from the hallway. From the right side of the doorway a figure emerged from the smoke. It was a woman wearing all black clothes. She was wearing some kind of goggles over her eyes. She also had on a vest with lots of pouches, and was carrying a large rifle.

The woman quickly entered the room and ejected her empty magazine. She then quickly made sure the little girl was alright.

“Please hold out your arm.” The masked woman request. Sherry was a little hesitant, she didn’t recognize the voice, but no one in this place had ever said please to her. Sherry quickly complied. The woman drew something that looked like a gun but had a liquid in some kind of tube. The woman then placed it on Sherry’s arm and pulled the trigger. While it stung a little Sherry didn’t think it would hurt her too bad.

“Are you ready to get out of here?” The woman asked?

“Yes ma’am.” Sherry quickly responded.

The woman pulled a mask out from her side bag, “Put this on and when I say go you follow right behind me. Understand?”

Sherry quickly nodded yes and proceeded to put the mask on. When they were ready the woman said go and off they went. Sherry jogged behind the woman in black as they darted through the hallway. Gunfire could be heard but it seemed to be from another area. The two women reached an elevator and pressed the button. Sherry stood next to the woman as she stood to one side of the doorway. When the elevator arrived she waited a few second then aiming the rifle, moved to check the elevator. Once they made sure no one was in or above the elevator they climbed in and shut the doors. The woman pressed the button for the first floor.

As the elevator neared the first floor the stranger drew a mirror mounted on a little rod from her bag. When the doors opened she used the mirror to check their surroundings. She then replaced the mirror in her bag and motioned for Sherry to follow her. The two slowly crept along side a wall until they reached a corridor and the woman made Sherry Stop. As she started to look around the corner several bullets struck the wall. The woman pushes Sherry away from the corridor, took her rifle and fired several quick bursts down the hallway. After four quick burst Sherry heard the distinct sounds of men grunting in pain.

Sherry’s savior then grabbed sherry’s hand and pulled her down an adjacent hallway. Sherry could see what appeared to be a lobby straight ahead and thought for a moment she might finally get out of here, where ever here is. A few more guards from the previous hallway start shooting at Sherry and her rescuer as they enter the lobby. The woman drops her rifle, draws a pistol and shoots a glass window in front of them.

Picking up Sherry the woman makes a mad dash for the opening. A bullet flies extremely close to Sherry but just misses her. She turns to see the wall the bullet struck, just as the woman cradles sherry and jumps out the first floor lobby window. The two roll a few feet and when they stop, Sherry hears a loud explosion erupt from the lobby the just exited. A silver Chevy Tahoe pulls up and the woman carries Sherry into the SUV. The driver and passenger are both wearing masks but greet the little girl upon her safe arrival in the SUV. The passenger quickly tosses several ball shaped objects into the lobby and once the woman is safely in the Tahoe they drive off. As the Tahoe turns the corner another explosion erupts from the building. Sherry and her three saviors drive away as fast as they can.

20:00 Undisclosed Safe house in Langley, Virginia

February 28, 1999

Sherry has spent the last thirty minutes washing away the grunge and grime of the past five months. She had been told by the nice man who told her to call him Carlos that dinner was ready for her when she was done getting clean. Carlos had been the man driving the Silver Tahoe and was the only one of her three rescuers that had unmasked yet. Sherry didn’t know why the other two were being so secret but Carlos simply stated, that they would when the time was right.

When she was done soaking in the tub and was completely clean and groomed Sherry found a nice dress, underwear, and some jewelry waiting for her. Happy that she could dress up, more importantly that she could change clothes, Sherry quickly made herself presentable and proceeded to go to the dinning room and eat. When she arrived there were so many dishes for her to choose from. Pizza, Spaghetti, Chicken, Salad, and more. As she approached the dinning area she was alerted to a crackling fire. She turned to the living room where the two masked people were sitting waiting for her. They had changed outfits, the woman was wearing an evening dress, while the man was wearing a nice blue shirt and pants. Sherry looked at them, wondering who they were. The couple stood up, walked over to her hand in hand, and said hello.

Sherry thought she recognized their voices this time. She looked at their eyes, which this time weren’t covered. Both of their eyes were light blue, and as she watched, the couple had tears forming in their eyes. She didn’t understand why they would be crying until they reached from their masks and pulled them off. Sherry’s eyes immediately began to water as she ran to hug both Leon and Claire. Claire bent down on one knee and grasped the little girl tightly with all her might. Leon did the same only wrapping himself around both of them. No one moved or said anything for several minutes until the three heard, “it’s a Kodiak moment.”

The three of them just chuckled as turned and looked at Carlos Olivera. Camera in hand, he took several quick pictures of the reunited group. When they finally let go, the group joined Carlos at the dinner table. Sherry sat between Claire and Leon and across from Carlos. Leon and Claire told Sherry of everything that had happened to them since they last saw her. Leon could not apologize enough to Sherry for turning her over to the wrong people. Sherry told him that it wasn’t his fault, and that she was just as guilty as he was for believing the stranger.

Carlos then told Sherry about himself, how he also had survived Raccoon City and how he met the group. As Carlos told his story Sherry caught a glimmer in the corner of her eye. Looking in the direction she noticed it came from a ring. The ring was located on Claire’s finger.

“Claire….” Sherry spoke interrupting Carlos.

Everyone looked to where Sherry was looking. Claire and Leon simply smiled and moved closer to each other.

“We got married.” She informed Sherry.

“Immediately after words we began looking for you.

Sherry looked as if she would cry. Not from sadness, but from joy. She ran to Claire and Leon and gave them another huge hug. A flash went off and the trio turned to see Carlos with a camera. “I was ready this time.” Carlos offered before he fell over laughing.

After dinner Claire, Leon and Sherry sat in the living room of the safe house. Sherry had never really thought she would be this happy again but here she was, free, and with friends. “Sherry.” Claire said getting her attention.

“I realize you’ve been through quite a bit but Leon and I wanted to ask you something before you went to bed. We realize the last few months have been the hardest time in you life.” Claire stated.

“And we want you to know that we will do all in our power to keep you safe for the rest of your life.” Leon added.

“With that said….” Claire continued.

“We wanted to know if you would be willing to let us adopt you.” Leon concluded.

If Sherry could have only one happy moment in her life this would be it. Not saying another word Sherry began to cry. She showered kisses on the couple as tears ran down her checks.

“I love you……… Mom, Dad.”

In the adjourning room Carlos Olivera was e-mailing Chris Redfield and the other members of STARS. The email simply read:

Congratulations Chris,

you’re the proud uncle of a little girl.
