Chapter 2. Calling Upon His Memories
His fingers strummed across the silver cords, each note coming out soft and serene. He closed his ruby red eyes, the music flowing through him, around him, for him and for others. He felt the instrument take his soul as it glided him through the notes, playing softly through the beautiful music he composed for those he cared deeply for.
His hands stopped their gentle playing, his liquid red eyes opening slowly; sadly. He looked up, his eyes staring deeply at the temple above him, the opening shrouded by weeds and vines that hung in its way. He stretched his legs along the stump on the ground just beside the temple opening, resting the harp in his lap.
The confrontation he had only hours before with the great Hero of Time had not been what he had wanted it to be. He hadn’t expected him to remember either. Just seeing the blonde haired Kokiri grown and more muscled than that of the ten year old he had met only once before, and had fallen deeply for within their short meeting.
He sighed, running a hand through his wheat-coloured blonde hair, th soft strands moving through his fingers so softly and easily it made him sigh. His heart felt heavy, as did the sudden weight that seemed to rest so easily on his shoulders.
‘Why did he have to remember...’
He felt a sudden sadness descend upon him, resting amongst the other weights that held him down. He groaned at his sudden tiredness and rested his head into his hands, closing his crimson orbs, letting the darkness blanket him softly, making him feel light and calm. His heart was heavy with sorrow. All he had wanted to do when he had seen the Hero was to run to him and pull the blonde haired male into his arms, press his lips to Link’s, and caress him softly.
He smacked himself mentally. The Hero would never appreciate such an act. He would probably slap the Shiekah for being so forward and tell him he was dirty and filthy. Link would never accept him... or his feelings.
“I just need to forget... and hope that he will forgive me,” Sheik sighed, looking up at the temple once more.
He stood slowly, holding his harp in his left hand. His eyes drowned with tears and he felt the shudder of his shoulders roll over his body to the tips of his toes. He bit the sash around his mouth tightly, shaking his head to hold back the glittering tears that strained to fall threateningly down his face and show his weakness.
He would not cry for someone who would never love him.
‘Love...’ Sheik thought, smiling weakly. ‘What a pathetic feeling.’
He looked up at the temple once more, sighing and letting his eyes flutter and the sweet image of the more adult, more muscular Link fill his mind. It had definitely been a wondrous sight. The Hero, grown up, standing in all his glory before the Sheikah, his face stern and serious, like he knew the young Kokiri would become.
‘Link...’ his mind echoed out, ‘I wish I could speak my feelings to you... only once.’
A sudden thought brought him to a halt.
Zelda.
The princess, whom his mother and he was to protect, also loved the Hero. Though she only had a brief encounter with Link in the palace yard before he was sent away on his destiny. She did not know the Link that Sheik knew. She did not know his sensitivity, the beauty of his eyes as they glimmered with passion...
He shook his head.
‘Bad thoughts... bad... bad thoughts,’ Sheik hissed to himself.
*~*~*
His sword swung. Left. Right. Another Left. The beast rose into the air, it’s skull-face inflamed blue with anger, the horse in the picture rearing and kicking. He glared at the shadow creature with great intensity, the Master Sword held tightly at his side, the blade glowing with the Triforce of Courage.
“Navi?” Link called, glancing for his fairy.
“I am here, Link,” Navi gasped, appearing from within his hat. “He is strong.”
“No strong enough,” Link snarled.
“Link... wait...” Navi called.
The Hero took off toward the shadow creature, the glimmer of his sword echoing as he brought it into contact with a dark blast from the creature, sending it back with great force. It struck the shadow beast square, a deafening screech escaping.
The beast lolled to the octagonal floor as Link pierced the creatures shoulders, slinging his sword across his body and swinging again to bring it across the phantoms thin and feeble waist. The creature roared at him, sailing powerfully into the air and knocking Link back against the hard metal grates blocking his exit.
Navi floated to him.
“Damn him,” Link groaned.
“Link, your judgement is clouded,” Navi cried. “You must clear your mind.”
“My mind is clear,” Link muttered, glaring at the phantom as it laughed down upon him.
“No, it is not,” Navi scolded. “You are thinking about your meeting with Sheik...”
Link darted a glare at her, warning her to stop.
She did not.
“I know what happened in the past Link,” She whispered. “I know because I was their.”
Link stood, swinging his blade before himself to block a dark attack as it sailed toward him, the energy knocking him back into the hard grates, the sharp points cutting deep into his skin, breaking and making him bleed. He winced and collapsed against the heavy bars, panting for breath as he felt his body crumbling from within.
“You have no idea how I feel Navi,” Link hissed. “He hurt me... he forced me away that day... seven years ago... I will never forgive him for that...”
“Link...” Navi whispered, tears in her small white eyes.
Her Kokiri child stood, holding the Master Sword before his body as the ball of dark energy was returned to them more quickly than the last time. Link swung, his arm cracking as the heavy blast was deflected and struck it’s target.
The phantom creature hissed and collapsed.
“Now you die,” Link yelled.
He ran forward, bringing the Master Sword back and striking the beasts skull, breaking through the small flaming head. He heard it screech and roll against the bars, jumping into the air and exploding into blue flames. He jumped back away from the debris of bone and cloth, protecting his small fairy companion.
The creature slumped in the air, it’s head splintering. Link gasped, leaning against the bars as a dark void appeared in the floor, sucking in it’s surroundings. The horse in the picture across from them reared, neighing loudly. It broke through the picture and crumbled into the dark void, ripping to pieces on contact.
“LINK...”
“NAVI....”
Link reached out, wrapped a cupped hand around his fairy and holding her against his body while gripping onto the metal grates tightly, his arms numb and like jelly. He bit down on his bottom lip, closing one eyes as his blonde hair whipped into his blue eyes.
“What a worthless creation... it is back tot he shadow realm with you...”
‘Ganon...’ Link gasped.
“You did well, Hero of Time,” the booming voice of the enemy said, echoing off the walls. “But the others will not be as easy as this one.”
“Why don’t you just face me like the man you are, Ganondorf,” Link yelled.
“Silence fool,” the dark lord uttered. “Now, to the shadow realm with you, Phantom Ganon.”
The creature rolled it’s heads, skeletal hands gripping onto it’s crumbling skull as it was pulled into the shadows below, screeching and reaching out to the Hero, it’s long clawed hand dragging across the rug as it disappeared into the void of swirling darkness.
The wind died away, the void closing up as the echoing laughter of the King of Dankness died away with it. Link opened both eyes, standing up straight and allowing Navi room to move. She looked up from his hand, unfurling her butterfly wings and taking to the air.
“Was that...”
“Ganondorf... yea, that was him,” Link muttered, pulling his hands into fists. “Bastard... I’ll kill him.”
“Calm yourself, Link,” Navi whispered. “We must now return to the temple.”
Link sighed.
He walked toward the glowing force in the middle of the room, stepping through the circle as a crystal enclosure surrounded him, pulling him off the floor and swirling around him. He closed his eyes as the dizziness enveloped him and he was transported from the room and into the darkness.
(Flashback)
Link opened his eyes, groaning at the sudden pain that etched from his backside and up his spin to the pounding in his head. He heard people yelling and screaming. He could hear the crackle of wood and feel the heat of flame around him. His small eyes shot open as he leaned up, looking around frantically.
“What’s happening?” Link cried.
A figure cloaked in Shiekah garbs ran to him, gripping his wrist tightly and pulling him from the bed. The Kokiri child blushed, covering his more private parts and prying his wrist from the child’s rough embrace.
“Sheik...” Link’s voice cracked in a whisper.
“Get dressed,” the Shiekah snapped, letting his ruby eyes dart and glare at the boy.
Link jolted within at the harsh tone and nodded quickly, pulling on his green tunic and white slacks. He flopped to the floor, eyes on the Shiekah before him as he tugged on his brown boots. Sheik ran to the entrance of the small room, flattening against the wall and peeking around the corner of his home.
“They’re almost hear,” he whispered, his eyes flashing to Link. “Hurry up.”
The Kokiri felt tears shimmering in his eyes and bit down hard on his bottom lip. He didn’t want the Shiekah boy to see him cry just from a simple order. He was young and confused. Last night had been something he knew he’d never forget. He had never known he could feel so... good.
“I’m done,” he whispered.
“Come on,” Sheik snapped, a little to harshly.
He reached out and grabbed Link’s wrist tightly again, pulling the Kokiri with him to the back of the large beautiful home. The sound of running feet and the loud boom of voices became clearer. Something crumbled and crashed outside; a woman screaming deafened the sound.
Link twisted his wrist in Sheik’s painful hold, a whimper escaping his throat as he dug his boots into the floor, slowing their rough pace. He felt the hold tighten and yelped at the sudden pain, feeling his wrist begin to go numb.
“Sheik... please,” Link whispered. “Your hurting me.”
“Shut up,” Sheik snapped, turning to glare at the Kokiri. “Do you *want* them to hear us?”
“Who?” Link cried frantically.
“Shut up,” Sheik yelled in a hushed voice.
Link felt stunned, shocked to the spot. His body shook fearfully as he was dragged to a small tunnel that lead out into a pen at the back of the home. Sheik forced Link to his knees, pushing the Kokiri through the gap and following. The Shiekah shoved the Kokiri hard, making Link’s knees split painfully and bleed against the rough wooden surface.
“Hurry up,” Sheik growled.
Link merely nodded and pulled his body weakly through the small tunnel, emerging into a pen. He crawled over the small threshold and flopped into the muddy puddle below, his knees stinging in the thick sloppy substance. He pressed up against an old crate and held his quivering body, the sway of heat blistering his skin.
“This way,” Sheik ordered, pulling the Kokiri with him.
“Please... Sheik... tell me what’s happening?” Link whimpered.
“You want to know what’s happening? Fine,” Sheik barked. “The village is being attacked, that’s what. Ganondorf has sent his men in to kill all the children in the village.”
“No,” Link whispered.
“Yes... now come on,” Sheik snapped.
“I want to stay,” Link cried, prying his wrist from Sheik’s tight hold. “I want to help.”
“You can’t do anything,” Sheik yelled.
“How do you know. I’m supposed to be the Hero of Time. I’m supposed to save Zelda and the land of Hyrule. I’m...”
SLAP.
“Grow up,” Sheik yelled, glaring at the Kokiri who’s head was turned to the side, eyes wide form the impact. “You’re no Hero, Link.”
“Sheik...”
The Shiekah glared at him and grabbed his wrist again, pulling him around the large white home and into the burning streets of frantic people. They ran fast, dodging guards and horses as they passed through the many people. Sheik stopped, dropping down behind a crate, dragging Link with him.
“Stay quiet for once,” Sheik hissed.
Link merely whimpered and covered his face as the stain of tears trickled away, his body quivering. He felt his hands grip the hot soil, his nails breaking and bleeding as hatred burned through him.
He had been used.
A fuck in the bed and then thrown away.
He hated him.
He hated Sheik.
He would never forgive him.
Link gripped Sheik’s shoulders, turning the Shiekah to face him. He glared at the ruby eyes boy who in turn glared back. His fists clenched tightly and the struck, the flat of his fist connecting with Sheik’s nose.
The Shiekah hit the crate stunned as Link stood and darted from behind the crate, tears streaking down his face, horses and woman moving around him. Screams and yells echoing in his pointed ears. He squeezed his eyes shut and continued to run...
Never once looking back.
(End Flashback)
Link let his eyes slowly flutter open, the fire now dead where he had made camp near the forest. His eyes tung with the freshness of tears, the water rippling down at the basin. He pulled his knees up to his chest and rocked slowly, staring at the glassy surface of the water that flowed beautifully from Zora’s Domain.
His heart felt heavy and thick, pounding within his chest as the dream slowly flowed away from him. He didn’t try to stop it. He didn’t want to stop it. The memories hurt to much, and he would never forgive him.
He made it a promise.
His hands felt clammy and he looked at them, staring down at his pale digits. His heart ached with the pain of the past, the tears flowing forever down his face. No matter how hard he wanted to try, he could never forget. He was only ten when it happened, but even at ten he felt something. Yea, he hadn’t hit puberty and he was nothing but a child. But still, he felt differently after that night.
When he had first met Zelda, he thought she was beautiful, her eyes crystal clear and the brightest of baby pink. But she was nothing compared to Sheik. The Shiekah’s solid crimson gaze that seemed to read into the very soul. The young unblemished face he had touched and kissed, had caressed and gazed at while their bodies rocked together.
He shook his head vigorously.
The memories... he hated them.
“I hate you Sheik... I hate you,” Link whispered, the tears flowing heavily.
“Link...”
The Hero looked back at his green kokiri hat, Navi slowly emerging from within it’s confines. He smiled at her sadly, his tears shimmering in the hollow light of the moon. She spread her small clear wings and floated toward him as he turned his head away to stare blankly at the rippling pool of water.
“Are you okay?” She whispered, resting on his bare shoulder.
“I’m fine,” Link mumbled. “Just thinking.”
“About Sheik?” Navi asked, knowing it was the answer.
Link shot her a soft glare.
“It happened,” she whispered, placing a small unseen hand on his pale cheek. “You must forget the past and move on.”
“I’ve tried,” Link whispered, staring at the water. “The memories just keep coming back.”
“Well then,” Navi said, fluttering to the ground and glowing in front of him, “you need to confront him and discuss it.”
“What good would that do?” Link asked, his tone holding a bit of anger.
“If you talk to him, you’ll relieve the stress that his holding you down... holding you back,” Navi said wisely. “If you tell him... maybe you’ll finally forget.”
Link let his eyes flutter for a moment before he rested them upon his fairy, staring down at the amazing glow that she emanated. He smiled at her and placed a hand gentle on the ground. She walked into his palm as he lifted it to his face and smiled at her more brightly.
“Thank you, Navi,” Link whispered.
“For what?” she asked.
“For being hear... for understanding.”
“Of course, Link,” Navi said, smiling softly. “It’s what I’m here for.”
Link smiled at his fairy and crawled back to his camp. He flopped down onto the small torn blanket he collected from his treehouse and sighed, closing his blue orbs. He heard Navi crawl back into the confines of his hat. His heart still felt heavy and weak, and he knew he would have the same dream again... and again... and again...
*~*~*
The rumbling Goron passed him quickly, almost cutting across his chest. He jumped back and gasped, glaring at the rolling ball.
“How are we supposed to stop him?” Link asked, glaring at the Goron as it rolled away.
“You tried your sword and your new bow,” Navi said, fluttering just over his head. “Maybe you could try your bombs?”
Link smirked and pulled one of the large blue bombs from behind his shield, sliding the ignighter across the wall and sparking it. He watched as the small rolling Goron crashed toward them, swaying back and forth. He concentrated, watching closely, holding the explosive loosely.
His eyes widened, marking his point... and tossed the burning bomb.
It landed... and exploded, a shaft of flame and cloud of smoke mushrooming into the air, rumbling and making the walls dust and rocks crumble to the ground. He waited, watching closely.
“Think it worked?” Link asked, standing up straight.
“Well I don’t see any rolling Goron,” Navi stated.
Link nodded and walked forward, wafting away the thick cloud of black smoke. He felt his foot nudge something and looked down, one brow lowered as he place his hands on his hips, staring down at the quivering Goron.
“Hey,” Link said.
“Hear my name and tremble,” the Goron said, it’s voice childish voice shocking Link some. “I am, Link, of the Gorons.”
“Kid... my names Link,” the Hero muttered, glaring at the rockboy.
“What...” the Goron child unfurled himself, standing up and staring up at Link with big black eyes, their glow making him step back uncertainly. The kid clapped his hands together and smiled, his eyes going even bigger.
“Y-your names Link too,” the Goron said, smile going wide. “Wow... oh... wow... so... so you’re the guy that defeated the Dodongo in Dodongo’s cavern right?”
“Uh... yea,” Link said, looking even more confused at the boy.
“Wow, oh, wow,” the boy cheered. “Can I have your autograph?”
“Um... kid,” Link said uncertainly. “Where are the other Goron’s?”
He must have said something wrong because instantly the young kids face changed from beaming happy to flat out puppy-faced and sad. Link looked up at Navi, hoping his fairy had an answer but he could tell that she was just as confused.
“Listen, if I said something wrong...”
“N-no... you didn’t,” the young Goron croaked, it’s rocky shoulders shaking. “It’s j-just...”
“What?” Link asked softly.
“All the G-Gorons... they were taken to the m-mountain,” the kid cried.
“Why?” Link asked, suddenly feeling a bad vibe from the situation.
“A man... I think my father said his name was Ganondorf... h-h-he came to the village and told my dad that...” the Goron child broke down into tears.
“Shhh,” Link lulled, rubbing the Goron’s rocky back. “Take your time.”
“H-he said... he said that... if the Goron’s didn’t do as he ordered, he would revive the legendary dragon from within the mountain,” the Goron whimpered.
“You mean...” Navi gasped.
“Volvagia,” the child whispered.
“Volvagia?” Link asked, royally confused.
“Volvagia was a legendary dragon that was destroyed by a Goron Hero very long ago using a large hammer,” the child said, filling in the many missing gaps. “He just came to the village and BOOM... down went Volvagia.”
“And Ganondorf decided to revive this dragon,” Link inquired. “But that still doesn’t answer my question of where the Goron’s are.”
“Everyone was taken to the mountain by Ganon’s followers. He’s going to feed them to Volvagia,” the young Goron cried, his voice frantic.
“Wow, calm down,” Link whispered. “I can help.”
“You can,” the child said, his tear-drenched eyes widening hopefully.
Link nodded.
“Well... well you’ll need this,” the child said, producing a red tunic from behind his back.
“A tunic?” Link said.
“The mountain is too hot for a human such as yourself,” the goron said. “You’ll need this to withstand the heat.”
“Awesome,” Link chimed, taking the red tunic. “Thank you.”
“Father went to the mountain through a passage in his throne room,” the Goron child said. “He was going to save our people but I fear the worst for him.”
“Don’t worry,” Link said, pulling the tunic over his head and adjusting it over his body. “I’ll save him... all of them.”
“Thank you, Link,” the Goron child whispered. “Hero of Time.”
Link smiled and turned away from the child, running toward a stairway leading down into the base ground. He ran through the entrance to Daruna’s throne room and pulled away the large ape, an opening appearing that lead into the mountain’s crater.
“Here we go,” Link said, taking a breath.
“Here we go,” Navi echoed.
The pair passed through the heat, the sweltering steam making them both gasp. Link lifted the top of his hat and Navi slipped under it, hiding herself from the explosive flames. Link walked slowly, taking his time as he passed over a thick plank and toward the far bridge.
‘Broken,’ Link thought. ‘Damn... now how am I going to... my hookshot.’
He pulled the trinket from behind his shield and leveled it on the beam above the bridge. He swung across and landed, tipping sideways but keeping his balance. He looked down at the bubbling crater and swallowed, watching the lava bubble and spit at him angrily.
His feet clattered across the bridge, his vision on the entrance to that of the Fire Temple. He walked slowly, his eyes moving over the bridge to the mass of boiling heat below him and back again... and onto Sheik.
He gasped... and stumbled back.
“Sheik,” Link whispered.

FireandIce: This chapter would have been longer but I had to end it at that. It would have been WAY to long if I had added the next part. Don’t worry thought, I’ll get the third chapter up ASAP.
