Knux; Why can't you do it sooner! We're in a crisis here!
27; Really? Well it just so happens that i have a ton of homework to do!
Sonic; Here, let me help! *runs all over the place, paper work goes flying*
27; Noooo!
Chapter 3
Early in the morning, Shadow waited patiently outside the hut Sonic lived in. He had a big brown bag with him, doing as Sonic said; to bring provisions. He had not waited there that long when Knuckles stepped up beside him.
“So you are coming? And I thought you would back down, like a coward.” Knuckles barred his fangs.
“You shouldn’t underestimate me.” Rep Sha Shadow.
“Didn’t you used to work for Robotnik?”
“Me? No. And even if I did I can’t remember.”
“Well, just so you know, I don’t trust you.” The echidna snarled putting his own hefty bag down on the ground.
“And I will be able to handle everything on my own.” Shadow closed his eyes and crossed his arms.
Yet Knuckles was still curious. “What are you taking with you?”
“Beer.”
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“Beer? Is that it?”
“Yeah, so?”
Knuckles sighed. He glanced at the hedgehog’s bag and it looked very bulky. He was not lying.
As the dew on the grass began to dry off, Sonic opened the door and greeted his friends warmly.
“So, is Tails coming along?” Knuckles asked, “he’s the only one not present.”
“Hi guys!” Tails said gleefully as he joined Sonic’s side proudly.
“Ah! So we’re all here!”
“Such a shame.” Muttered Shadow.
“Do we really have to bring him along too?” Knux whispered to Sonic as he referred to the black hedgehog.
“Afraid so. Now, let’s get out of here before anyone changes their mind!” Sonic said.
Canyon Zone
Two hours later.
“I’ve changed my mind.”
They had not journeyed that far considering the time they had spent wondering across a barren wasteland. Before they had left Knothole, Tails had suggested that they use the plane. Though there was a problem. The plane could only carry two people. Shadow wanted to be the pilot despite Tails saying otherwise. The hedgehog had flipped a control and the whole thing just blew up. Now having no other option but to walk, they travelled out of Knothole, through a dense forest and into a bleak desert. So far they had faithfully followed the map’s directions though they only had one between all four of them. Now Knuckles had declared that he had changed his mind and wanted to go back.
“It’s too late now,” Sonic argued, “look, we’re gonna rest soon anyway.” They had been walking at a comfortable pace but soon the sun was high in the sky, causing the ground to heat up. Tails had resorted to flying and Knux had put his shades on.
Shadow rummaged in his bag for a can of beer. Already he had sunk his teeth into half a dozen cans, trashing the carcasses behind him as he went.
Later into the afternoon and a sandstorm hit the desert. Sonic ordered them to stay close. They could barely see in front of their noses. Slowly they progressed and at long last, the dwelling storm moved on, leaving the foursome tired and thirty. Their muzzles were caked with sand, their eyes stinging from the sharp winds. It was only a matter of time until an accident occurred. Sonic stepped right into it. They had headed straight for a cliff. A trick from Eggman himself. Sonic fell off first, screaming as he plummeted. Knuckles didn’t have time to find out what was going on, and went down with Sonic.
Shadow stopped in time and looked down, smirking.
“Oh no! I have to save them!” Cried Tails, and he jumped down after them.
“Ah great, just what we needed.” Knuckles said darkly as he fell, Sonic by his side.
“If Tails doesn’t rescue me, I’m gonna kill him!” Sonic cried.
“I think I’m gonna be sick…”
“Not now! Wait until we hit the floor!”
“Maybe there’s some way we can save ourselves before we crash.”
“You idiot!” Sonic cried, “you can climb and glide! Do something!”
“Okay, I just need to balance myself first.” Knuckles said. “Wow! This is a really long fall!”
“You’re not gonna keep talking after you’re dead are you?”
Tails grabbed Sonic’s ear. “Gotcha!” The young freedom fighter called.
“Hey, not the ear! The hands!” Sonic shouted.
“Oops, sorry!” Tails locked paws with Sonic. The echidna glided the rest of the way down.
Once safety on the floor, they rested amongst the vegetation, recovering after the fright of the fall. Eventually, Knuckles fell asleep as they waited for Shadow.
“Do you think Shadow will find us okay?” Tails asked Sonic as the sky darkened and the sun slowly set over the horizon.
“I was hoping he wouldn’t find us but knowing my luck he will.” Sonic replied, “it would take him quite a while to get down here without falling.”
“He probably thinks you’re dead too.” Added Tails.
“You could have flown up and brought him down off the cliff you know, Tails.”
“I tried but when he went up there for him, he wasn’t there.”
“Good. He’s probably gone after Eggman all by himself.”
“You were saying?” Came a firm, deep voice. Sonic sat up instantly as Shadow stepped out into the light of the fading sun.
“Glad you could make it.” Sonic lied, “wanna make yourself a seat?”
Shadow looked disappointed. “You’re alive.” He stated simply.
“Cool isn’t it? Well, sit down!”
Shadow didn’t seem too keen on Sonic’s friendly request. He moved off and sat further ahead.
“Are we gonna sleep here tonight?” Tails asked.
“Ask Knuckles.”
“But he’s sleeping.”
“Exactly. Night Tails.” And Sonic made himself comfortable on the sandy floor and closed his eyes.
Tails shivered. The air was dank and thick. He heard the howl of a wolf, heard the cracking of dead twigs on the sandy floor. He was too frightened too sleep. But weariness and exhaustion nagged at him to let his guard down and rest.
When he had finalloselosed his eyes he heard the most loudest of snores.
“Sonic!” Tails whispered harshly as the hedgehog continued to make odd noises in his sleep. His pleas were useless however as the black night thickened.
They were up early next morning. Tails was still exhausted after being kept awake all night by Sonic. They others however, were ready to move on without delay.
“Now where’s that map?” Sonic muttered, scrambling around for the bit of paper that guided them forwards.
“Ooh, my back…” Knuckles stood up, still sleepy from his long nap and then finding that he had lain awkwardly as he slept that night. Trying to straighten himself, he cracked his back. Tails felt sick from the sound and fainted.
“Why did he come along anyway?” Shadow asked coldly as he gazed at the small fox cowering on the floor.
“Because he’s my pal!” Sonic packed his things after having a very refreshing breakfast. “You all ready?”
Knuckles flexed his limbs. “So, where next?”
Sonic took out the map. “A few more miles in this desert place then we’ll head into a forest type jungle place.”
“Oh no, not the jungle.” Knuckles groaned.
“Why? What’s wrong with that?” Sonic looked more closely at the map. There was a giant swamp in the middle of it.
“Do you know what kind of creatures live there?”
“Sounds like your afraid.” Shadow said.
“I am not afraid.” Knuckles barked, “it just could be dangerous!”
“What? More dangerous than falling off a cliff?” Shadow gave him a quick glance before wondering off with a can of beer in his grasp.
“Well, at least we haven’t come across any badniks yet.” Sonic folded up the map and slipped it into his rucksack.
Tails stood, tired and dizzy. The heat was becoming stronger again and so was the light.
“Let’s hurry and move out.” Sonic said, “there will be more shade as we strive to get closer to the jungle.”
The heat lapped up at them and slowed them down as they pressed ons. Ts. They covered a great distance. Soon the wind lifted and the heat cooled. Ahead they could make out the shapes of trees and water. They couldn’t believe their luck. The sea was on their left while the jungle lay straight ahead of them. Without hesitation, their pace increased. Finally, they reached the first palm tree and they collapsed under its shade.
27; Hope you enjoyed that. I guess it was kinda short though. Next is when they enter the jungle! And trust me, they'll have enough surprises!
