--

"Hey, are you okay?"

Riku cracked his eyes open cautiously; he remembered very little after stretching his hand out to Sora, and being engulfed by the darkness. Now a pair of large blue eyes set in an exotic face framed with golden blond hair was looking at him expectantly, awaiting an answer. "Y-yeah, I think so..." The silver-haired young man sat up carefully, rubbing his forehead. "Where am I?"

"Pinnacle Rocks, on the Lindblum Plateau." The strange boy grinned, tail waving behind him; Riku pretended not to notice. "I come up here to train sometimes, even though the monsters are pushovers."

Riku looked around at the pillars of stone, and the babbling stream running nearby. /I made it... this is... another world.../ His heart leapt as he got up slowly.

"Where ya from? I've never seen you here before."

"Oh... I'm from... someplace far away."

"You LOOK like you're from far away. I don't recognize your clothes style at all." Finally, the tailed boy stuck his hand out. "I'm Zidane."

After a few moments, the shake was accepted. "Riku." Several minutes later saw them walking across the plateau through the waving grasses. "What can you tell me about this place?"

"Lindblum? Oh, it's a wonderful city. Big, noisy, densely-populated... just the way I like 'em. The shopping can't be beat... except maybe by Daguerro, but most of the humans live on THIS continent, so Lindblum's closer." The wide grin was flashed again; Zidane loved to smile. "I live in the theater district with some friends of mine, a play-acting group called Tantalus."

"Oh? What kinda plays do you do?"

"All kinds, but our best is the tragedy by Sir Avon, 'I Want to be Your Canary'."

"Hmm, I may have to watch that sometime." Riku smiled happily at his new friend, already excited about this new world.

About half a mile from Lindblum, the two boys were attacked. It wasn't anything big: a carve spider that Riku was able to defeat in one blow with a sickening crunch. Zidane whistled shrilly, impressed. "You handle that wooden blade of yours pretty good. What say we set you up with something better once we're in the city?"

"I say that's a great idea." Riku grinned, then made a face at the bug guts staining the wooden practice sword; a borrowed bandana from Zidane cleaned up the worst of it.

After the five gil tour of the business district, the two young men hopped onto an air-cab to the theater district, where Zidane quickly showed his companion the key landmarks: the big clock tower, the painter's workshop, the actual theater, and, finally, the hideout of Tantalus, one of the most daring bands of adventurer-thieves the Mist Continent had ever produced.

And waiting in the hideout was one of the most unusual individuals that Riku had ever met (which was saying something): he was every bit as pretty and smooth as a girl, from his silky lavender hair and soft full lips to his perfectly manicured toenails, and the strange garb in between; he was wearing an unusual half-skirt over shortshorts and a spaghetti-strap tank top, and no shoes to protect his pretty feet. His cute face was framed by soft, downy feathers the same color as his hair, and his purple tail flicked as he looked up at the entrance of Zidane and Riku, and grinned. "Well, it's about damn time." If his outward appearance was distinctly feminine, his voice was almost a match: a delicately pitched baritone that could be easily mistaken for a woman's contralto, but when raised in the heat of battle was most definitely male.

"Yeah, I got a little held up. Kuja, this's Riku; I found 'im down by Pinnacle Rocks."

"A pleasure, Riku." The beautiful man smiled warmly at the newcomer, his feathers bobbing as he cocked his head in greeting.
