Chapter 18

"Just... closer..." Snake said, kissing him at this. "You realize I have to stay here while you have no distance between each other, don't you?" Wonders if he makes ANY sense at all from a logical point of view.

Hal kissed him back softly. He laughed a little and held onto him, nuzzling.

Snake is suddenly a very embarrassed man this very moment. "What's this amusing?"

"No no I just thought it was nice..." Hal said softly. "Although you meant before I get too fat to get close.."

"See you were making sense just now, then slipped into a whole foreign dialect of low self-esteem..." This really WAS lost on him too.

Hal sighed and looked at him. "Aww Snake don't worry.." he said kissing his cheek.

The dogs started barking loudly from the living room upon hearing a helicopter land outside the cabin.

"I wonder what they're going crazy for.." Hal said standing up to investigate.

Snake pulled Hal back for a moment, feeling sort of something odd about the way they were barking. "How about I go through the trouble this time?" he said, not even bothering to hide the worry well as he took Hal's place in this.

Hal nodded. "I'm going but I'll be right behind you." he said.

A few of the dogs barked and pawed at the front door.

Snake moved and had them pull back, not really wanting any harm to come to his 'kids' if he could help it. At this he carefully checked who was there.

Outside two figures in winter coats with hoods disembarked from the helicoptor and started walking towards the cabin.

Snake didn't like that and decided to move towards them instead. "Who are you?" He asked, immediately.

"Snake! How dare you for get Colonal Campbell and I!" came the sweet chinese accented voice of Mei Ling. She crossed her arms and looked at him from under her hood.

"Ah." He said, relaxing with a stare. Now he was calmer about that then. "We had to pull the dogs inside, so, mess." He said, wondering about the coats.

"Snake should we go in?" Campbell asked looking at him.

"Yeah Alaska weather isn't easy to get used to." Mei Ling laughed.

"Yeah, you might catch something." he said, moving so they could get inside and directing his atention entirely in making sure his dogs knew these were nice people.

The dogs settled down and backed off.

Hal stood by the front door as they came in. "What are you two doing here?"

"Our usual business." Campbel laughed.

Snake simply kept an eye from where he stood, closing the door behind them so they wouldn't freeze.

"Snake. We have intelligence that some nuclear weapons were stolen from one of the government's secret holdings. We suspect Liquid may have his hands on something big if he needs that many warheads." Campbell started.

Hal looked at them. "H-How'd you find that out? I haven't been able to hack into the mainframe for months now."

Mei Ling looked at him. "A video was sent via the codec." she said. "Snake..They have your codec frequencies..Yours and Hal's.."

"How did they get that?" he said, looking at them both meaningfully.

Campbell shook his head. "Not sure. But you two should be careful. We're going to assign you new frequencies as soon as we can figure out this problem."

Snake knew there was something oddly wrong with that but he couldn't put his finger on it, so he simply nodded for now.

Hal looked at them. "We appreciate you telling us..I wonder why I couldn't get into the systems I normally could..."

"Your IP address may be an issue." Mei Ling said. "I had the same problem."

"Oh well I can fix that." Hal laughed.

Campbell looked around the room seeing things that had been moved out of the other room. "You moving house Snake?" he asked raising an eyebrow.

... Ah... that... "We, uh... needed that room cleared out." Snake said before he turned to look at Hal. He trusted Campbell knew better than to interfere with Dave's only chance for being a parent, seeing how he was very much told he couldn't have kids but it was Hal that worried him.

"For what?" Campbell asked.

Hal looked at Snake before turning back to Campbell and pushing up his glasses. "A room for the dogs for the coming winter." he lied.

Snake blinked. He had to wonder why Hal lied to him about this, however he didn't question it and followed with that particular current.

Campbell raised an eyebrow. "What about the house you built outside?"

Dave gave Campbell a look that told him he was very much appreciated as a friend and respected as a soldier... but Snake would be grateful if he proceeded with caution. "They kind of need their space."

"Well I think it's cute." Mei Ling grinned. "After all they're like your kids."

"..." Snake smiled at his dogs at this. "Yeah, pretty much... You'd think I could do with more." He muttered with a bit of a hint at that.

Campbell nodded. "Well we should be going. We'll send you your new frequencies as soon as possible." he said shaking Snake's hand as he usually did. Mei Ling of course had to hug him. "Stay warm!" she called as they both left the cabin for the helicoptor.

Once they were gone, Hal sighed and sat down on the couch.

Snake sat with him after checking the door was very secure and he looked at Hal at this. "Do I even need to ask?"

"About why I didn't tell him?" Hal replied.

"Should I ask?" He said, wondering why Hal wouldn't tell him, just out of curiosity and an urge to watch over him.

"I didn't want anything to go wrong.." Hal replied softly. "You had that look on your face.."

Snake nodded at that and wrapped his arms around Hal's shoulders protectively. "We'll tell him some other time."

"You sure we should?" Hal asked. "I mean what if something happens or what if by some chance someone's listening in?"

Snake didn't need the paranoia this moment, so he remained silent. He thought about it and his brain played a rather nasty trick on him: It started showing him the many ways this could go wrong... and he was trying to get away from it.

Hal stood up and went over to him. "I didn't want to worry you like this.."

Taking that like an order from the codec, Snake walked up to Hal and held onto him. "Hard not to."

"I know..I can't have you worrying this much.." Hal said nuzzling him.

"That's probably true." Snake added before he kissed Hal's neck and pulled away. "Gotta finish with that wall I guess." He said, deciding to feel useful before it drives him insane.

Hal nodded. "Maybe we should just paint over it?"

"Could ruin the paint later on, I got it."

Hal laughed. "Dave I meant that as an 'if you wanted' statement."

"Ah, got it." He said, smiling reassuringly at Hal.

Hal smiled back. "Go ahead and pick the color." he replied. "I know you want it to be a boy."

"What's all this about 'it'? He's going to be great!" He said, smirking at Hal.

Hal laughed. "I know. but look forward to a few rocky months."

"Why is that?" Asked Dave curiously.

"You're going to need to give me lots of back rubs and foot rubs during these last 6 months and then you can look forward to sleepless nights filled with crying." Hal giggled.

... "Why is this funny?" Alright at first it sounded pretty good, he wasn't one to object about having his hands all over Hal but... crying wiped that smile away from his face in no time - and hell he liked sleeping.

Hal looke at him. "Snake I'm kidding. The crying part is only till it learns to sleep through the night and I'm sure I'll be getting up more than you will."

"Oh you meant the kid." Snake added with relief.

Hal tilted his head. "What did you think I meant?"

"I thought you meant from you." he said, voicing the dread it seeded into him... That's when something hit him, not physically, however. "I have no idea how to do this."

Hal looked at him. "Neither do I but maybe you should read up on it..Like I have.."

"That's an idea I guess." He said, thinking along manuals... ... well translated manuals that didn't tell him to toss the safety and keep the grenade in his hand.

Hal went to his desk and got him the pages he printed out as well as the things they got from the hospital. "Here..Read these."

Snake nodded and decided to study them as he tended to with the material for any upcoming weaponry test.

Hal smiled and sat him down on the couch. Hell. The wall could wait. "Those should help."

"This is... detailed..." he said, already spotting words that were not helping him understand.

"What don't you get?" Hal asked.

"The pretentious author telling me what the kid will be thinking."

Hal laughed. "That's from an expert's point of view."
