“Alice!”
“AAAAGH!” She wrenched herself forward with a scream, doubling over and grabbing tighter onto him. Alice sucked in a terrified gasp and looked up at him, then around herself in a panic, the confusion spilling out of her steadily as she shook like a leaf from head to toe.
“Alice,” he said immediately, while cupping her cheek in a rough hand and forcing her head up so that she was looking at him. “Thank God you’re awake. Are you alright?” Carlos pulled her closer, squeezing her tight in his strong arms and resting his cheek against the top of her head now that he knew she was awake. “You scared the hell out of me,” he said quietly as he felt her still shaking terribly against him. “I’ve seen people having nightmares but that…” He let the sentence drop while looking about the room; there was an icy wind blowing in through several holes in the walls that faced the outside, and every pane in the windows had been broken. Most of the furniture had been thrown about the room if not shattered, and there was a dislodged pipe hanging from a gaping hole the ceiling, dripping water onto the floor.
She dug her nails deeper into his vest while staring out at the room over his shoulder. “Your bedroom,” Alice pinched out weakly.
Carlos pressed a kiss to her forehead. “You came in here groaning and clawing at my door; the moment I touched you, you began to scream and shake, and then… the furniture started moving, then it started getting up and committing suicide against the floor, the walls, the ceiling and each other.” He stroked her hair and nuzzled her lightly, without even thinking about what he was doing, just knowing that it felt comfortable and right to soothe her like this. “I’m still tingling from head to toe; whatever you were doing felt strange, it was hot and icy at the same time, stinging my insides and outsides all at once, making a shrieking sound in my brain.” His ears were still ringing, truthfully. “Were you in pain? Are you hurt anywhere?”
Her mouth opened and closed a few times as she tried to form words, before Alice whispered raggedly, “No, it was just… a nightmare.”
He nodded in understanding. “Do you want me to take you back to your r -?”
“No!” she cut him off immediately.
“Ok,” Carlos said without argument, trying to placate her and get her to calm down just a little bit more. “We won’t go anywhere, that’s fine. Here.” He reached out and picked up what was left of something that had once been a blanket, and wrapped the shredded mess of stuffing and patchwork around the both of them, but mostly her. The wind was cold and made goose bumps ripple across his skin, but it was tolerable as long as she needed him to stay like this.
Alice settled down some against Carlos as the blanket helped her start to keep the warmth of her body close. She turned her head a little more and pulled at his vest until she’d loosened it enough to shift it, then pushed it out of the way, resting her head against the worn cloth of his shirt, one layer of thin material away from bare chest. Her ear pressed to his pectoral muscle a little bit while she shivered one last time and pulled her knees in closer, feeling his arms give another reassuring squeeze. “It’s snowing,” Alice said absently, her voice soft, as she listened to Carlos’ heart beating steadily in his chest.
His head turned, and the deep black-coffee hue of his eyes caught the light coming in from outside as he watched large clumped snowflakes drift slowly past the broken windows. “It’ll pass,” he assured her before stroking her hair again. “Do you need more blankets?”
“No.” Alice blinked slowly, shifting one last time before settling comfortably against Carlos. She didn’t care that they were a tangle of limbs or that she was practically climbed on top of him, nestled deep in his arms – what she cared about was how much better she felt at the moment. “This… is perfect.”
Carlos said nothing, only nodded once, as Alice’s breathing slowed. In minutes her heart had stopped slamming inside her chest like a jackrabbit’s, until her muscles relaxed and she unclenched her fists and jaw. He took a deep breath and let it out in one long, relieved sigh as Alice’s breathing became steady and she fell back to sleep in his arms.
