“Doctor Abel!”

He sat up with a start, disoriented and alarmed. The doctor pulled the papers that had been stuck to his face off his cheek and put a hand on his chest as he saw the lightly glowing little girl standing in front of his desk. “Violet,” he said in a shaken voice before letting out the breath he’d been holding, trying to straighten his hair with trembling hands. “You startled me something awful.”

“Apologies Doctor. I did not mean to frighten you, however, there is something urgent you really must see. Please turn the Casino Station monitor towards yourself.” The computers in his office had provided a small amount of light, but upon Violet’s silent command, the overhead lights blinked to life as she watched the doctor do as asked. Immediately the readings from his testing station in northern Canada disappeared, and were replaced instead by one of Violet’s screens, the readings quite obviously irregular as the starting point for them hovered around zero or one, but at the current time and date on the charts the graphs had spiked to well above two thousand.

“What is this, Violet?” the doctor asked blearily, before rubbing his eyes and patting his hands along the desk until he found his glasses. He knew what it was the moment he had his glasses on and could see what she was showing him, but it helped to have her elaborate so he didn’t interrupt as she explained.

An ‘I told you so’ look passed on the girl’s face even though it wasn’t spiteful, more like a mother glancing at her son after she’d told him not to touch the hot oven element but he’d done it anyhow. “The psychic readings I mentioned to you earlier have returned, at a much higher level, and seem to be spiking at a constant. Whatever is happening on the western coast of the United States is happening at this very moment and it’s not something that should be ignored. Nothing Umbrella has created that I know of can create waves of this level and my sensors can barely keep up with the continuing rise the power keeps taking; I can hardly keep calibrating my trackers to increase the maximum expected level of power before this surging energy spikes up a new level and goes beyond what I am tracking.”

“Fascinating.” Abel was wide awake now. He watched as indeed the numbers went right off the charts, and moments after the images had changed to adjust for higher readings, they went off the charts again. It was getting stronger, whatever it was. “Can we pinpoint it?”

“Unfortunately not at the moment,” Violet replied. “The source is very distant and at the same time so powerful that it covers a very wide area of Earth. The best I can give you is the western coast. However, there’s more.” The monitor on Abel’s desk flickered and the image changed to a pass code screen with White Queen’s identification number blinking at the top, and a username composed of nonsensical letters and punctuation jumbled together just above a password entry field. With a nod from Violet, one hundred and some asterisks dotted the password field before a small green window popped up, declaring that the password was accepted. “I was able to gain a little more access to my sister’s systems, what’s left of them,” the girl said while lacing her fingers together behind her back. “I believe what we are seeing right now is an example of what is referred to in her databanks several times as Project Alice. What exactly that is I haven’t deciphered yet, but there are previous recordings of psychic booms exactly like this one in her memory, though none so powerful. The name leads me to believe that this Alice would be one of the rumored creatures Doctor Issacs experimented on without the consent or knowledge of his superiors.”

He sat back in his chair heavily, draping his arms out on the armrests and letting his gaze drift back and forth between the two monitors, one with rising numbers steadily climbing and the other with jumbled fragments of corrupted files and half the screen taken up by a pixel-smeared image of a nude body on an operating table. “What in God’s name was he doing down there?” he whispered.

Violet’s head lifted suddenly, and her whole body seemed to perk up as a smile pulled at her lips. “Doctor Abel,” she said with delight, “I know what Project Alice is now.” New information began to stream onto the monitors, not only filling the two on his desk, but also the other ten surrounding it, propped on filing cabinets and hanging from the ceiling, left anywhere they could be seen from his desk so that he didn’t ever have to leave just to compare information from multiple sources at once. Abel’s eyes went saucer wide as information poured into him.
