Later That Night…
There was an unusually large turn out for the concert. Normally less than half the auditorium would fill up with people, but tonight it was packed. Every seat was taken, all the tickets were sold out. There were even a few people standing in the isles and off to the side due to the lack of seats.
The orchestra sat on stage warming up, casually talking, waiting patiently for Mr.Keeta to take the stage.
Meanwhile, backstage Sheik anxiously paced back and forward waiting for Link. He looked up at the backstage clock and it read ‘8:15’. The concert starts at 8:30, but call time was well over an hour ago.
/Where the hell could he be?!/ He really wanted to ask Zelda, but she was avoiding him, still upset about the event that happened earlier that day. It then hit him. /Shit what if she already told Link… Oh goddess what if he isn’t coming because of me?! Damn it!/ He punched the door only resulting in a sharp stinging pain in his fist.
“That wasn’t smart…” He growled holding his fist in his hand.
”Five minutes! Five minutes till curtain time!” Someone yelled. Just as he did Dark came stumbling in half a tuxedo. His shirt was wrinkled and untucked and he wasn’t wearing his coat. Most unprofessional.
”Well looky whose here!” He yelled slinging the tuxedo coat over his shoulder. “I thought for sure you wouldn’t be here after what you did to me in the cafeteria.”
Sheik knew he was just trying to get to him, so he did his best to pretend he wasn’t there. /I am not going to start with you Dark…/ He thought to himself.
”Hmm, and no sign of little brother… Guessin’ the principle got the best of him?” His mouth curved into a taunting smile. “Looks like I’m playin’ flute alone tonight.”
”He’ll be here!” Sheik shot back. Dark raised his hands in a defenseless manner and backed away.
”Hey, easy there tiger. You don’t want to get sent to jail for attacking me do ya’? Leaving Zelda alone to play a duet by herself…She seems pissed enough.”
”Just leave me alone Dark.”
”Sure thing pretty boy. “ With a flip of his wrist he walked on to the stage leaving Sheik alone.
Sheik continued to look towards the door hoping to see Link’s bright blue eyes walk in, but the lights were dimming and he couldn’t wait any longer.
”Ok everyone on stage now! We are starting NOW!”
Sheik reluctantly dragged himself on stage and took his seat. Zelda was already there, dressed up in a very elegant pink dress, shiny diamond earrings, and a necklace that look like it was worth almost as much as the harp. She glanced over at Sheik and quickly looked away.
”Welcome newcomers! I say ‘newcomers’ because I see many unfamiliar faces. I can honestly say that I am proud to see so many people out here tonight to support these young talented musicians.”
Applauds.
”Thank you. But among these musicians we will be featuring two of our finest: Sheik Auburn and Zelda Hyrule!”
More applauds.
Sheik and Zelda had reheased this many times. When there names were called they would stand up, bow, then sit back down, but Sheik was so focused on Links whereabouts that he missed the cue completely.
Zelda stood up and bowed and Sheik stumbled out of his seat to bow, but by then it was too late. Zelda had already sat back down. Sheik turned red slightly and again took his seat. Zelda scowled at him and when he tried to make eye contact with her she’d turn her head away with a ‘humph’ and look towards the audience.
”Yes well, there is another person I would like to introduce. No, he isn’t a new student. He has been here for 4 grueling years and just now finally decided to shine.” Mr.Keeta looked at Dark with a smile. “But as I always say ‘Better late than never’. I am of course talking about Dark Redblade.”
The audience roared. One would think that the audience could care less, but they all seemed to be absolutely obsessed. Girls shrieked out his name and somewhere in the back a group of men began to chant ‘Red-Blade, Red-Blade!’. Sheik was a little startled by the crowds reaction, and Zelda seemed to share the same startled reaction.
”Yes yes, he is amazing isn’t he? And yet that is not all!” The audience quitted down. “Our very own Redblade has been accepted to The Zoran Conservatory of Higher Arts and Music!”
“He what?!” Both Zelda and Sheik said. Dark also seemed to be shocked by the news, but he just stood there and smiled carelessly waving around his flute.
“That’s right, and on a full scholarship!”
The audience again yelled and screamed. This time they began to chant “Speech! Speech! Speech!” At first Dark shrugged and waved away there chants trying to be modest but after being poked with the mic by Mr. Keeta he swiftly took it away and began speaking.
“Thank you all very very much. I can honestly say that if it weren’t for all of your support I would not be here right now. But there is one person in particular I would like to thank,” The crowd again fell deathly silent. “My dear brother, Link.” Dark turned to the orchestra and then quickly turned back to the crowd.
“Well, it seems he is not here. That is most unfortunate. I know he would have been proud to see that his big brother was presented with such a great reward.” Sheik couldn’t help but to notice the smug grin on his face as he said that. Darks eyes looked down on Sheik momentarily. Dark mouthed something cruel at Sheik and looked back towards the audience.
“Yes well, I guess I will be playing flute alone tonight.” He pretended to sound sad. “But I will play twice as loud for my dear brother Link. Thank you.” Dark handed the mic back to Mr.Keeta and sat down. The audience again roared with praises.
“Now without further adieu I would like to present your Hyrule High Orchestra!” Mr.Keeta turned to the orchestra and tapped the stand with his baton. He then raised it and looked over at Sheik and Zelda waiting for eye contact. They both nodded and he began.
Sheik and Zelda counted quietly to themselves waiting for the entrance. Zelda started before Sheik with a long slow elegant gliss all the way from the bottom to the very top of the range. Sheik continued to count knowing that he would be coming in soon as well. When his time came the orchestra stopped for his solo break, but something was horribly wrong. Sheik played his notes certain they were all right, but the harp did not seem to want to play the right notes. He tried to ignore it continuing, but when the orchestra came back in along with Zelda the notes began to clash horribly. Sharps were playing upon flats, and flats upon sharps.
It was positively horrible.
Zelda looked at Sheik wondering what was going on. Mr.Keeta turned his head and scowled at Sheik. The audience began to boo and hiss.
/Damn it! What the hell is going on!/ Sheik thought plucking at the horrid strings. He tried to keep his focus on the music, but he couldn't help but to feel he was being starred at by someone. His assumption was correct. Sheik glanced up at Dark and saw his blood red eyes narrowing in at him. And it then all clicked. /Son of a bitch fucked with my harp!/ There was nothing Sheik could do but plow through the song.
The show forcefully went on until the duet finally ended. The audience applaud, but not for the right reasons. They began to yell and throw things at Sheik telling him to get off the stage. Even the orchestra yelled at him, it was like the whole room was against him.
Sheik ran off the stage trying to cover his face. He ran backstage, out the door and into the darkness.
~~~~~~~
‘Where am I?’
Silence.
‘Am I dead?’
Again silence.
‘Why can’t I see anything? Where am I?’
Link couldn’t tell if his eyes were truly open. It was pitch black. Every time he tried to move a great pain would wash over him.
He couldn’t really tell if he was all there either. He could feel nothing but the pain in his body, but not his body itself. He tried to inhale and exhale but not breath came.
‘No! Someone!’
Silence.
‘Why can no one hear me?’
“I can hear you Hero…”
‘Wha- Who is that? Where am I?!’
“Hero, you need to wake up.”
‘I can’t… I can’t feel anything…I can’t-,”
“You can. You always could. It is time to rise again Hero.”
‘Who are you?’
Silence.
‘Please…Who are you?’
“Who I am is not important Hero.”
‘Why do you keep calling me that? Wait… He kept calling me that too…’
“My precious Link, you must wake up.”
‘…Mother?’
Silence.
‘Mother! Is it you? Don’t leave me alone!’
“You have never been alone… Someone will always be there to guide you…”
‘Mother!”
“Hero, awaken…”
‘No, wait Mother! Come back!’
Silence…
“Link!”
‘What?’
“Link, come on can you hear me?”
‘I can’t…’
“Link you better not die on me! Wake the hell up!”
Link could finally feel his body slowly come to life. He could breathe, his heart was beating, the blood again flowed through him.
He opened one eye slowly and saw a worried face. Those calm red eyes. How he missed it. “Sheik?”
“Link! Oh Goddess Link what the fuck is up with you!” Sheik yelled. Sheik wrapped his body around Link in a protective manner. He was actually shaking. “Link…I thought you were…”
“Where am I?” He said softly. Sheik barely caught it.
“We are in your house. Link, what happened? Who did this to you?”
Link fell silent for a moment. His mind was nearly blank, but something must’ve happened otherwise he wouldn’t be in so much pain. Even the dim lighting of the room was killing his eyes. It felt like his entire body was on fire.
He then remembered everything. In a white blinding flash everything came crashing back to him. His body began to spasm violently.
“Link? Link what’s wrong?!” Link could hear Sheik, but when he tried to respond whatever what was left in his stomach had poured out all over Sheik and the bed.
“Uhhg…”
“Oh Link…” Sheik didn’t care that he was now covered in his lovers vomit, he was worried to death of Links health. Regardless of the smell Sheik quickly scooped up Link and carried him to the bathroom. He sat him down gently on the counter and turned on the water in the tub.
“Just hold on a minute Link…please hold on.” Sheik began stripping what was left of Links clothing off and tossed them aside. He then ran back over to the tub to test the water. It was perfect. He quickly made his way back to Link and again lifted him then gently lowered him into the warm soothing water.
Link winced at the sudden warmth of the water. It stung a little, but after a few seconds he welcomed it.
“Ok, I need you to hold on for a minute. I am going to call the ambulance. You need help.”
Link nodded and curled himself up into a small ball. Even though there were rips and scars all over his body Link still felt self-conscience about being completely nude in front of Sheik.
She pulled out his cell phone and dialed the emergency number.
“Hello, what is your emergency?”
“My uh… Friend. There is something wrong with him. It looks like he has been beaten pretty bad or something. He Is throwing up and he can hardly walk. Can I get an ambulance here ASAP?!”
“Ok sir, what is your address?”
Sheik began naming off Links home address, but what came next was an unexpected shock.
“Oh… Sorry sir, but we can not come out there.”
“WHAT?! WHY THE HELL NOT! THIS MAN IS IN PAIN!”
“Well sorry sir, everyone has to go sometimes.”
Sheik was infuriated. Before he could cuss the lady on the other line out she hung up! Of all the things she could have done she hung up!
”What the hell!?”
Link dull blue eyes watched Sheik as he threw the cell phone to the ground and shattering to thousands of pieces.
”Damn it. I am just gonna have to carry you myself.”
When Sheik went over to Link to pick him up he turned away.
”Link please, you gotta come with me. You are hurt.”
“No Sheik… No one will help me.”
“What? What are you talking about?”
Link sighed and looked over at Sheik once again. “The teachers…the school… the police… Everyone is against me Sheik.”
Sheik stared at Link with an expression of ‘What are you talking about.’ For a while Link didn’t understand, but it all slowly clicked into place. What was really going on in Hyrule.
“Sheik… Ganondorf did this to me.” Before Sheik could begin cussing his brains out Link continued. “He has been messing with us…all of us. He controls the teachers and the police department. Hell…he probably controls all of Hyrule. I think he may be Ganon.”
”Link…”
”I think it is time, Sheik.”
Sheik fell silent for a moment. Deep down he knew Link was right. He has felt it for some time now, but tried to avoid it or think nothing of it. The time may be soon, but Link was too sick to deal with any of this right now. He decided to throw it behind him for the time being and changed the subject.
“Sheik…” He whispered trying to keep his eyes open.
“Oh no, don’t you start goin’ on about that. Listen, Link you are hurt pretty bad. Let me finish washing you up and I will put you to bed. I’ll stay with you.”
“Sheik I am not some sort of child! He is Ganon! He tried to kill me! He took my…oh shit.” Link grasped his scarred chest and began breathing irregularly.
”No! Sheik…I have to get it…back…I…” He could hardly finish the sentence.
“Come on Link, you need to lay down. We will talk about this tomorrow.” Sheik began to wash Link gently. Though Link wanted to try to explain to Sheik what was really going on, the soothing feeling of the warm water and Sheiks gentle strokes began to lull him to sleep.
”Sheik… Thank you…” He said drowsily and dozed off. Sheik caught him before he could submerge his entire body in the water.
Sheik lifted him out of the tub and dried him off gently. He then found some pajama’s and slid him into them. After he dressed him Sheik carried Link over to his bed and covered him up. He then kneeled down and kissed him lightly on the forehead.
”Good night…Hero.”
