Horror or Romance?
"I don't know you guys, it seems so... deceitful."
"Axel, you're only deceiving him if he's in on it. You can't lie to him about something he doesn't even know is happening."
"Yeah, but still. I know I'd be pretty upset."
"You'd be upset if some hot chick you liked-"
"Hey guys, so what's the plan?" Roxas asked as he walked through the front door of Axel's and Demyx's apartment.
Axel quickly dropped the conversation and turned to his shorter friend.
"Oh hey Rox. Um, we were just waiting for you."
"So, what are we doing tonight?"
"Uh, well..." Axel hesitated.
Demyx rolled his eyes before jumping in.
"We were thinking we'd go see a movie."
"Cool, which one?"
"Uh that new scary one with the zombies."
"Oh, that's suppose to be really gory."
"Just the way I like my movies." Demyx grinned.
"Ok, so we all riding in your car?"
"Uh, actually," Axel butted in.
"Actually, " Demyx cut him off, "Zex and I have to turn in early tonight 'cause I've got rehearsal tomorrow with the band, but we didn't want to ruin your and Axel's evening, so you're gonna ride with him and Zexy with me."
Roxas narrowed his eyes suspiciously, but only for a moment before smiling happily and replying, "Sounds good. Let's get going."
The drive to the theater was less than thrilling. Axel and Roxas sat quietly almost the entire time. Roxas would look over from time to time at his friend, but Axel kept his eyes fixed on the road the whole way there. Finally they pulled into the parking lot and headed into the theater.
"I didn't know you were a fan of gore, Ax," Roxas commented as they waited in line to purchase their tickets.
"Oh, uh, yeah. Sometimes."
Roxas perked an eyebrow.
"You feelin' ok?"
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine. Just hate waiting in lines is all."
"Hmm." Roxas didn't really buy it, but he went along with it anyway.
"Hi, how may I help you?"
"We need four tickets for-"
Axel cut the shorter blonde off, "Uh, actually, Demyx is paying for his and Zexion's, so just two tickets for Grim."
The lady nodded and typed in the information. Roxas reached into his pocket to pull out some cash.
"Oh, uh, don't worry about it Rox. I know you're tight on cash. I'll pay for the both of us."
Roxas looked up confused, "What? You don't have to do that. I can pay for a lousy movie ticket."
"No really, it's cool. I'll pay." Before Roxas could get another word in, Axel had handed a twenty dollar bill over to the cashier.
"Here you go, enjoy the movie."
She smiled and handed them their tickets.
"So uh, do you want any popcorn or anything?" Axel asked.
"No, no I'm good."
Axel frowned, "Are you upset?"
Roxas sighed, "No, it's fine, let's just go find our seats."
The redhead stood for a moment and watched Roxas walk to the theater entrances before quickly catching up to him.
The four boys were half way through the movie. Zexion was sitting on one end, his two arms wrapped tightly around Demyx's left. On the dirty blonde's right was Axel and to his right was Roxas. The movie had been rather boring so far. Just a lot of build up, but now it was getting to the good stuff. Axel watched the screen as a young girl crept quietly down a hallway, trying to keep her breathing silent. She peered around a corner. Slowly.
"Aaaaah!!"
Two zombies lunged at her. Several people jumped in the audience, including Axel. However, he hadn't jumped because of the movie, but because of the small blonde that had suddenly latched onto his arm. Roxas tried to catch his breath as he clung tightly to his friend. Axel too tried to catch his breath as his heart threatened to beat right out of his chest. He wanted to tell Roxas to let go; that he was making him uncomfortable, but another part of him figured if he was gonna go through with this, he might as well go all the way. So he let Roxas cling for a good minute or so, before the boy finally found his way back into his own seat. Two more times throughout the movie, Roxas attached himself to his friend after a scare, and both times Axel just let him be.
The movie ended and the boys headed back out to their cars.
"Oh man, when that zombie fell down out of the ceiling grate! I thought I was gonna have a heart attack!" Zexion giggled.
"Or when that guy blasted that one zombie's head all over kingdom come. That was beautiful," Demyx added.
The four friends entered the parking lot.
"Well, Zex and I gotta be going, but you two have fun.
"Ok, good night. Hey, drive safe, ok."
"Will do!" Demyx called as he and Zexion took off towards their car.
Axel opened the passenger door for Roxas before running around his car and hopping in the driver's side.
The two sat quietly for a moment.
"So, did you enjoy it?" Roxas asked.
"Uh, yeah, I think they went a little overboard with the CG, but oth-"
"Not the movie," Roxas chuckled, "Our date."
Axel froze, his face turning every shade of red.
"What? Date? What are you talking about?"
Roxas rolled his eyes.
"Really? You really think I'm that dumb? Axel, not only have I been on several dates, but clearly you haven't. You did like almost every little cliché thing you could think of. We drove here in your car, just the two of us. You paid for the tickets. You asked if I wanted popcorn. I jumped on you three times during the movie, three, and you didn't once tell me to stop. And to top it all off, you opened my door for me just now."
The redhead wasn't sure what to say right away.
"Well?"
He sighed, "Look it was Demyx's idea, ok. I just. I told him about what you said to me the other night. About how I should try to see you as just another person, not really another man, and figure out exactly what I feel for you. So, I did. I thought about it, and I decided if you were a woman, or if gender didn't even exist, then I..."
Roxas sat wide eyed, not believing that Axel was about to say what he thought he was about to say.
"Then I could see myself being with you. Being... in love with you. But I told him I didn't think there was any way I could ever realistically see pass our genders. So he suggested a date. Just on my end, to see if it was something I thought might be possible."
It was Roxas's turn to be surprised.
"Look, I'm really sorry. I understand if you hate me."
"Hate you?! Axel, I love you more than I ever have now!"
Axel was taken aback.
"What?"
"Axel, you just admitted you love me."
"Oh, no, no, see I said if-"
"I know, if I were a woman or some odd gernderless being, but the point is you love me. So much so, you were willing to try and see pass the one barrier standing in your way."
"But Roxas, I didn't say-"
"I know... I know, you may never be able to get pass it. I understand that Axel. But just knowing that you love me. Just knowing that it's simply a physical thing keeping you from me, and not because you see me as just a friend. That is monumental in my book."
Axel couldn't think of anything to say.
"Axel?"
And then they were kissing. Roxas wasn't sure why, but they were. They kissed for what seemed like forever. And when they finally pulled away from one another, Roxas wasn't even sure it had really happened at all. Maybe he'd finally just lost it.
"What was that?" The blonde asked short of breath.
"I..I don't know... I just, I was listening to you, and thinking about how much I love you, and I just figured if I was gonna conquer this whole physical barrier thing, then I might as well attack it head on."
"And?"
"Um..."
The two sat quietly as Axel debated.
"I... I think I liked it. Hell, I think I loved it. I think I wanna do it aga-"
This time it was Roxas who pounced. He wasn't about to let Axel over think this. He had said he liked it and that was were the blonde had stopped listening. Axel liked kissing him. Axel, his tall redheaded best friend who he'd been in love with forever, loved him back and liked kissing him. Roxas wasn't sure if he'd died of a heart attack during the movie, like Zexion had suggested, but he didn't care. If this was Heaven, he could deal.
"Axel, you're only deceiving him if he's in on it. You can't lie to him about something he doesn't even know is happening."
