HaloCell 9: Mother Nature…what a b****

The Spartans approached the base cautiously, stealth wasn’t their strongest skill. They were led by Amura, who was second in command. Tara was originally the second in command and the one the Chief trusted the most, but that went south. No one expect that from her, and clearly the Chief was as surprised as they had been.
She led them quietly towards the base. The small dot on her radar started pulsating frantically now; Master Chief was close, really close. The dot turned into a small triangle, signaling they had found their target, but they were still in the middle of no where.

“They are underground” said Amura, her voice calm as always.
“I don’t see a base anywhere” yelled Jimmy
“Their underground facilities must extend for miles” said Amura “Lets keep going, the Chief needs us”

“No! he’s already enhanced!”
“Then just think about the results,… he… could be so much stronger, perfect even!”
“No you fool! Think of our lives. We wont be able to restrain him! He’ll kill us all!”
“This is science, this is what we do take chances, go where others are afraid to go…”
“Yes…..but all in due time. Scientific method dictates it so.”
“Fine, suit yourself.”

Mater Chief woke up to a heated argument around him. Two men in lab coats yelled and shrieked, causing him a headache. He turned to grab one of them, only to realize he was restrained and couldn’t speak. He wasn’t wearing his armor, only his pants.

“You are one lucky bastard” said one of the men “Excellent enhancements by the way”
“Don’t worry” said the other man, almost a whisper he could barely hear “We will just take the best of you and apply to our creations”

“Its simple really, on one corner we have strength, agility and intelligence created by man, and in the other; the same thing but this time created by nature.” He pointed somewhere on his right. John didn’t look, his anger was all but concentrated on these men. “ We are just curious really, who can do better us or her. Have we finally discovered her secret formula? Or have we failed and yet again remain in her motherly shadow?”

“Mother Nature, aint she grand. Aint she a bitch” said the other.

“She gives wonderful gifts, but only to a select few as you can see” he now moved towards another table to the right. A man lay on it wearing the same suit the Romans had. In his dizziness he couldn’t quite tell who it was. He focused on the inert figure on the table, dark hair, light skin and those ears. Suddenly it hit him like a sack of bricks, it was Sam. He’d found him. He felt at ease for a while and even a smile reflected in his eyes.

“Here’s proof of that, she made him to her exact specifications. He can use the same serum we use to create our Romans, except he only needs one dose. There’s no need to reapply it constantly, it immediately becomes part of him. She gave him that ability. No other person that we have treated has ever shown such potential.” The man caressed Sam’s hair, moving slowly he reached to another table and grabbed what looked like a small communicator. The other scientist walked towards Sam.

The Chief used this small chance to loosen his restrains; expertly he freed one of his arms. He untied the rest of the restrains, they both had their backs turned to him.
“Unlucky” he thought to himself as he slithered from the table. He was about to grab the man’s throat when he saw Sam stir on the table. Both scientist panicked and ran out as quickly as they could. The Spartan was so much taller than them, and definitely stronger. John didn’t even bother to follow them, his attention was all on Sam.
“ Are you yourself, or are you gonna try to kill me again?” he asked a little tentatively.
“I just might, for doing this to me!” Sam yelled at him. “I’m like them now you sanctimonious asshole!”
“I saved your life, …. Again!” he really felt like kicking him right now. The nerve of this guy. “I saw an opportunity and I took it, be more grateful you dick!”
“I know, I’m sorry” Fisher sat on the table, head in his hands. “Its just that….this, its just feels so unnatural, and thinking about what Tara said it just make me so…”
“Angry?” asked John
“Lets get out of here, I can’t stand this place much longer” Sam jumped from the table and headed to the door. “ where’s the Opsat by the way?”
“In the armor” he answered
“So they have it?!” yelled Sam “Oh come on, just shoot me why don’t ya!”

John just grunted and followed him, seeing him react like this didn’t anger him at all, somehow he felt like he knew him a little better now. They ran across endless corridors and wondered how come there was no alarm going off, maybe there was a trap somewhere. The Chief had trouble keeping up with Sam, he felt heavy and unusually slow. They came to the end of the corridor and ended up in a rotunda; five other dark doorways led out of it to unknown places. The Chief dropped down on one knee; he felt his energy drained and strength slowly leaving him. Sam went back for him, but before he could reach him a Roman leaped out of one of the darkened halls and attacked him. It surprised him so much he couldn’t avoid getting kicked against a wall. The two scientist from before emerged from another hall, behind them several Romans, all looked strong and capable of handling themselves.

“You will now do something for us” said one of them.
“Or your friend here will meet a painful and untimely end” said the other.
Sam looked at them, angry and feeling trapped. He realized he was feeling like before, when Tara tried to use him as a shield. “Being overly aggressive is part of it” she said. Sam tried to calm down.
“What makes you think I care about him” he said, his sarcasm coming out as always.
“Oh you do care, and if not then turn around and run” said one of the scientists pointing to one of the gloomy halls.
Sam walked towards it, calmly, as if nothing serious were happening. He remembered Lambert at that moment, and how he so coldly abandoned him. He turned around only to find Tara with a knife to the Chief’s throat.
“Come on, who are you kidding, you wont leave him” she said so matter of fact, it bothered him.
“What do you want me to do?” he asked.
