Harley: Look, I’m not in the mood for funny statements right now. I’ve got a headache and I feel awful. Read it, okay? And review it. I hate it when people don’t review. Just cus it’s not got sex yet doesn’t mean I’m not getting to it.

Froggy: So when are we gonna get to the sex?

Harley: We'll get there when we get there!

Chapter Ten: Master Slave Relationship

James walked through the dark forest, searching for her. His target, his objective. His orders were to kill her… but could he do it? He journeyed inward, the forest becoming stranger the further he went. The trees were leafless, gnarled. Some looked part machine, as if the forest itself had been roboticized. Those trees whispered to him.

“Traitor…”

The trees whispered over and over the same word. Traitor. The guardsman grimaced and continued on, ignoring the accusations. It wasn’t true. It couldn’t be. He wasn’t a traitor. He was the loyal defender of his kingdom.

Rain began to rise. Dripping up from the ground and falling into the sky. Figures shambled out of the shadow and looked at him. They were Robians, citizens of the kingdom that had been enslaved by that monster, Robotnik. They were beaten and battered, dented and rusty, missing parts. They moaned and pointed at him, calling him a deserter that left them to that fate. James ignored them and continued on.

There she was, darting through the forest, just a shadowy form that he could not make out. The fox took off after her, sword in hand, navigating through the cyborg’s forest and the upside-down rain. She was like a ghost, always ahead of him, disappearing and reappearing at will.

“You have to find her, James,” King Max said, “You have to find her and kill her. She is a traitor, a witch. She is evil incarnate, the devil herself. Slay her. Spill her blood. Kill her before she speaks. Don’t let her poison you with her lies.”

James continued on until the rain dried the forest up. The trees crumbled to dust. The robians fled. The ground hardened and cracked. Sunlight burst harshly through the ocean-sky. Looking around, the fox noticed a large black cloud that hovered a meter off the ground, and beside it was a white ladder. Breech Loader sat atop the cloud, legs crossed, looking down at him with a playful smirk.

“She’s the one you are looking for,” the feline said as she pointed to the vixen beside her, standing underneath the white ladder. Evelyn, his wife.

“No, James, she is the one,” Evelyn pleaded with him, “You have to believe me; I love you!”

“Piffle – if you loved him, why did you allow yourself to leave him?” Breech sneered.

“It wasn’t my fault! I wasn’t responsible, it was Robotnik!”

“If you’re not responsible for your own life, who is?” asked Breech.

“You’re a murderer and a traitor to your own people!” Evelyn accused.

“You knew you and your children would die and yet you did nothing,” Breech replied.

“What could I have done?”

“Anything,” Breech just smiled hollowly.

James drew a gun from under his cloak and pointed from one to the other, Breech and Evelyn, as they each spoke their case, each accusing the other one of being his target. Breech was calm and collected, almost as if she was bored of the situation, unafraid to die. Evelyn was the opposite, crying and begging to him. Her pleading annoyed James, so he shot her in the head. Her body turned to dust and was blown away in a gust of wind.

“I always knew you were one of us, Stone,” a sickeningly familiar voice spoke behind him. James spun around to see Robotnik standing there, a triumphant smile on his face.

James dropped to his knee in front of Robotnik. Suddenly someone kicked him to the ground. He turned and looked at Breech, who was snarling, “I thought Royal Guards were the best fighters on the planet! Get up, Stone!”

“What…”

Breech kicked him again, “Get up, Stone. Get up!”

“STONE!!” the intercom bellowed.

James yelped and rolled off the couch in Breech’s apartment. The fox cursed and looked for something to throw at the speaker, which was where Robotnik’s voice was coming from. He then decided that maybe it was not such a good idea. Rubbing his eyes and yawning, James responded.

“Yes, Lord Robotnik?”

“Stone, I want you and Loader to be down at the command center in twenty minutes, and not a second later! Hurry up!”

The intercom snapped off, and James growled at it. It wasn’t bad enough that his sleep had to be filled with bizarre nightmares, but that monster had to wake him up from what little sleep he could get by screaming in his ear. The guardsman sure hoped that the payoff of being undercover would be worth it. He climbed to his feet and walked over to the door to Breech’s bedroom. He gave it a few firm knocks.

“Hey, Breech, Robotnik wants us to visit him on the double. Better get ready.”

“I heard it, Prower!”

The fox straightened out his cloak and took the time to clean the dirt off his boots. He felt naked without his sword or armor… His paws came in contact with the tags around his neck. James shivered as he clutched them. If they were as strong as Robotnik claimed, it would be difficult indeed to ever remove them. A symbol of his servitude to his mortal enemy. He released the tags and waited for Breech to join him.

James heard Breech pushing the heavy weight away from her door. The door opened, and the feline stepped out, dressed, armed, and already prepared to go. There was no sign of the emotional trauma she had experienced the night before, and the bandaged wounds on her arms were concealed by the leather jacket. It was almost as if the events of the previous night had never happened. But when he tried to meet her gaze, she looked away from him. Those events did happen… she was just good at hiding her true feelings. A trait needed for survival in her lifestyle.

Without saying a word to each other, they left for Robotnik’s command center. The tension was thick in the silence between them, and it made James uncomfortable. She obviously didn’t trust him, hence why she was walking a couple feet behind him. Perfect for shooting him in the back.

They entered Robotnik’s command center, filled with dark shadows and harshly illuminated by several monitors. Robotnik’s swivel chair began to rotate in their direction, and James immediately dropped to one knee and bowed with Breech. How he hated to bow before the tyrant, but he was left with little choice. Looking down, he noticed that there was no longer any sign of the young spy that had died there; his body had probably been thrown in the trash like the royal guardsmen.

“It took you long enough,” the obese human growled, and James felt like his artificial eyes could see right into his brain and read his mind. “Rise. I am pairing the two of you for this newest assignment, one which you are both perfectly suited for.”

“Damn!” Breech hissed.

“Shut up, Loader.”

“Yes sir.”

James did as he was told, rising to his feet and facing the doctor in a way he hoped didn’t look defiant. Unarmed and in the deepest part of Robotnik’s inner sanctum, he would be helpless if the doctor took too much offense at any of his words.

“One of my spies has located those fleeing furballs in the Great Forest. I am sending you on an errand there, to deliver a message they won’t forget. A simple enough task for hunters of your caliber. You are to infiltrate the encampment of the Freedom Fighters and eliminate their leader, thus further lowering their morale.”

“Kill Max?” James swallowed hard and tried to hide his anger and fear.

“Of course Max, did you think I meant the Easter Bunny?”

James gritted his teeth. He was being ordered to kill the king. He knew he would have to get his hands dirty by being in Robotnik’s service, but he never expected this. He couldn’t do that, wouldn’t. As a guardsman, it was his sworn duty to protect the royal family, even at the expense of his own life. He couldn’t think of any way he could fake Max’s death or come up with a decent excuse for failure… it looked like his time in Robotnik’s service was already coming to an end.

But that left a whole other problem. Breech would probably have no qualms about killing the king, which meant he would have to face her. He might just have to fulfill Max’s wishes.

How the hell was he going to get out of that?

“Your orders are my actions, sir,” Breech said grimly. The expression on her face left no doubt in James’ mind that she was ready to carry out Robotnik’s command.

Robotnik smiled, an expression that chilled the fox, “Yes, they are, aren’t they?” that smile hardened, “I know you don’t desire to fail me, but if you do, the roboticizer will seem like a tickle compared to what I have in store.”

Breech’s paws trembled, and James could see that the fur of her tail bristled. He couldn’t blame her. He knew first-hand the kind of sadism that Robotnik was capable of. The guardsman could only imagine what it was like to live in fear of him every day of his life. Robotnik turned his mechanical gaze to James, a question burning in those red optic sensors.

“Do you have a problem with this assignment, Stone?” the human questioned in his rumbling voice, “If so, I’m sure I can find another use for you…”

“Of course not, sir. I’ve been looking forward to this,” James replied with a smile.

“I’m sure you have. This is your first assignment, so don’t disappoint me… or your fate will be the same as hers. Follow Loader’s lead; she will be your partner until you learn the ropes of this job. Oh, and I’m sure you’ll need these.”

Robotnik reached down into a package near the chair with his mechanical hand and drew out James’ guardsman armor and sword. He tossed them to the fox.

“Use them well. Now, get out of my sight!”

James and Breech simultaneously bowed and backed out of the room. As they did, James caught Snively’s eye, and the two of them shared a glance of recognition. They knew each other and who they were. But James knew he had nothing to fear from the tiny human, no threat of being revealed. At least not yet.

As they left the room, James immediately started checking his gear to see if it had been tampered with. There were no obvious changes, and for that, he was grateful. But from the disgusted look he noticed Breech give it, he could tell she wasn’t so pleased with his attire.

After his two servants had left his war room, Robotnik turned to the figure hidden in the shadows that had been hiding there all along.

“Well?” the dictator asked.

“It was him alright. I would know.”

“Hmm… so the Captain of the Guard has joined my service. How interesting.”

“He’s just getting close so he can stab you,” the figure said, “He’s too loyal to ever betray his king.”

“We’ll see. Whatever his intentions, I am quite sure that I can get far more out of him than he will out of me. Until then, follow them. Learn where his true loyalties lie. Take whatever actions you feel necessary. Unlike some other fools, you have never failed me.”

The dark figure grinned and left.
