Only You

It was always like this. He’d come home from work and he’d kiss her, pleasantries would be exchanged and then she’d say something that would piss him off. They argue without fail every day. I know this because I see them do it. I’m aware that I shouldn’t pry and that, what they do in the privacy of their own home is none of my business, but I can’t help it when they do it right across from my own apartment. She hits him but he never hits her back. There have been many times when I could tell that he wanted to retaliate but he’s not like that, he’d never hit a woman, despite how vile she may be. He walks away from the fights a lot, but she follows after him. I just want to go over there and shake her, sometimes. Just to ask her what her problem is, seriously!

He often sits outside after an argument and just smokes out on the sidewalk. I’ve noticed he has a habit of running his fingers through his hair when he’s agitated. His gorgeous and unbelievably wild red hair.

We met once while I was collecting my mail. He glanced at me with kind eyes and smiled before he retreated back into his part of the complex. I still don’t know his name. But I’d like to.

One time when I, myself, was returning home from work I saw her leaving the building. Her blonde hair slicked back and dark red staining her lips. Clutching her handbag she gave me a hard stare and looked at me with spite. There was no pleasantness in her eyes. They were cold and calculating. It made me wonder how the two ever made their relationship last as long as it did, as they both seemed like complete polar opposites. She would disappear for days on end lately and I’ve never seen him happier then when she is gone. I know that saying all this makes me sound like some, weird peeping tom or a stalker, but I’m merely observing. Observing something that I’m sure I’m not the only one to have noticed. It’s not my place to step in, and I don’t intend on making any moves, but I’d give anything to see him smile the way he did to me back then. I’d give anything to see him smile all the time.

This chapter is a sort of prequel so it's very short. Please, if you have time, leave feedback, if not, a favourite or something would be nice. All criticism welcomed as it helps better my writing and progress with the plot. I've edited my grammar as best I could so apologies if I've missed something out.
