Prologue
Like many daughters of the nobility in late monarchical France, Marian Casta was sent to a finishing school in her early teens run by the Catholic Church.
The purpose of these schools (most of which were actually convents), was supposedly to teach and instill the decorum, manners, refinement, and above all piety, that was expected of women who would one day rejoin French high society.
Unfortunately, like so many elements of the Catholic Church that were in regular contact with the French nobility, the convent of Saint Mary’s (where Marian was a student) had become corrupted by the wealth and power of the upper class.
This was because, due to the fact that only the children of wealth and privilege went there, teaching positions at St.Mary’s were considered prestigious, and only nuns with connections (e.g. those who were the daughters of nobles themselves) were able to get them. Moreover, the current Abbess in charge of the convent was particularly venal and corrupt, treating the nuns, priests, monks, and students there as her personal servants and playthings. As pawns in her quest to improve the status of herself and her noble family.
Still, some of the people at St.Mary’s were genuinely devout. Such as daughters of the nobility who had had strict religious upbringings, nuns and priests who truly believed that they could ‘save’ the souls of young women by teaching them the Catholic dogma, and those who felt that their meditations and service at St.Mary’s brought them closer to God. The presence of such people helped limit the open corruption at the convent. For even members of the Catholic Church who did not truly fear God’s wrath, were usually afraid of attracting the notice of those at the top of the Church hierarchy.
Thus most of the nuns, priests, and female students at St. Mary’s were expected to project an image of modesty and religious piety most of the time. Conforming (at least in appearance) to Church standards of conduct and morality.
But this did not apply to Marian Casta.
For her father Pierre Casta (patriarch of the powerful Casta family) gave a substantial donation to the convent every year, and Casta was known to dote on his only daughter. As a result, the Abbess and the other Catholic officials usually went easy on Marian (even when she was caught violating St.Mary’s rules) and went out of their way to make her happy. Moreover, thanks to her natural charm and voluptuous figure, the female Casta could usually get what she wanted from the priests at the Catholic institution (which were few in number, but more often than not occupied positions of authority at St.Mary’s).
This meant that Marian could sleep as late as she wanted (unlike the other girls who had to get up for early morning prayers), eat what she wanted when she wanted (while most of the people at St.Mary’s had to get by on plain meals at regular intervals), and even dally with all the pretty students and attractive priests that caught her eye (or in a few cases, a young nun).
Of course most of the other female students at St.Mary’s resented Marian Casta’s privileges. But given the fact that it was widely known that the Church officials there would almost always side with Marian if she came into conflict with another student, and the fact that Casta could be very vindictive if crossed, most of the other girls either sucked up to her or simply did their best to avoid Marian.
Thus Marian Casta’s freedom to do and get what she wanted was virtually unrestricted.
But Marian was never entirely happy with the status quo, for she was always looking for new sensations and experiences.
Then (quite unexpecdly from her perspective) she found one in the form of a new student.
The girl was a drow, and like all her kind had long pointed ears, smooth black skin, silky white hair, and crimson eyes. Like many female dark elves she also had a pretty heart shaped face, and a willowy figure with a small bust.
However, unlike all the other female drow Marian had met, she did not appear at all haughty or arrogant. The young elf actually seemed to be on the verge of tears, and kept glancing around nervously.
Something about the elfin woman’s beauty and apparent vulnerability called to her, and Marian Casta resolved then and there to become better ‘acquainted’ with her fellow student.
