Victorian Temptation
"Well, that seems to be about it for this painting," Jonathan said with obvious satisfaction.
"Right," said Charlotte. She sounded a lot less certain and her blue eyes seemed to scan the dark room as though looking for something.
"Something wrong?" Jonathan asked.
"Not sure," said Charlotte. "Probably not, though. I'm probably just reacting to the sudden change in the magic flow."
"You sure there's no problem?"
"Yes Jonathan," said Charlotte, looking over her shoulder. "I'm fairly certain."
"Well, if you say so," Jonathan said. He straightened up. "One headless zombie knight down... And, actually, I have no idea how much more to go."
"True, we should probably get going," said Charlotte. "You go on ahead, I'll catch up."
"Now, you're sure there's nothing wrong?"
Charlotte rolled her eyes. "Yes, Jonathan."
"Alright," said Jonathan. "Catch you outside."
Charlotte waited patiently until she saw Jonathan's back disappear from the room and looked up.
"You can come out now."
The air in front of Charlotte shimmered and boiled before finally taking shape. The vampire calmly lowered herself to the floor and gave Charlotte a calculating look. Charlotte returned it with a look that was nearly as calculating. The vampire looked a bit... strange. It wasn't the fact that one of her eyes was green and the other red, it was simply because she was so altogether plain. It could have been because of her green and beige clothes that denied her any hint of sexuality and made her look like she had wandered out of some previous century, but Charlotte suspected it was some sort of trap. No vampire looked that plain without a good reason. Especially not when they had enough magic flowing through their body to make the hairs on the back of her neck stand up.
"My, oh my," the vampire said, her voice cold save for a hint of fascination. "I knew I sensed something. Seems a witch got inside."
"I'm not alone, you know," Charlotte said.
"Yes, one Jonathan Morris is with you," the vampire said. "So since I already know who you are, allow me to introduce myself. I am Loretta. Lady Loretta. And I have some tragic news for you. This wasn't the only one of my father's paintings."
"I know that," Charlotte said. "I can obviously tell by sensing the movement of the magical energy."
Loretta smiled like only a vampire could. "I know. You possess great magical power... for a human."
Charlotte tightened her grip on her book while she mentally went through all the spells in her possession, trying to figure out which one would be best suited for dealing with the vampire. "So I suppose you want to take me out before I become a serious threat, am I right?"
"No, you are wrong," Loretta replied. "I have strict orders from father not to fight you. Not that I would want to. Extinguishing so much talent would be such a waste."
Charlotte's eyes narrowed. "What are you saying?"
The vampire started walking towards her, although floating was perhaps also accurate for the way she moved. She smiled, a curiously promising glint in her undead eyes. Charlotte swallowed, feeling her heart beginning to beat faster as the vampire came closer and closer. She knew she had to cast a spell at the young woman before she reached her, but somehow the vampire had her nailed to the spot.
Then Loretta was in front of her and it was far too late for anything. The vampire put a hand on her cheek and Charlotte was amazed at the fact that she didn't even instinctually pull away. Instead she just kept staring into the vampire's calmly smiling eyes.
"You should become one of us," Loretta whispered as she caressed Charlotte's cheek. "I promise you you will not regret it."
Charlotte's heart pounded so loudly she was surprised she was still able to hear anything at all. "Then why don't you just bite me right now," she said, trying to keep her voice from trembling.
"I would have you join us of your own free will," Loretta said. "But, as a promise of things to come..."
The vampire leaned closer until her lips touched Charlotte's. Her kiss was amazingly soft and though Charlotte knew she should feel repulsed she could not help but feel peculiarly wonderful. The vampire's kiss wrapped her in almost loving warmth and unless Loretta was far more powerful than she assumed she didn't use a single drop of magic to make her feel this way.
Loretta stepped closer, her body now pressing against Charlotte's, her arms around her back. Charlotte knew that she was helpless, that the vampire could kill her or turn her with ease. Yet the only thing Loretta did was deepen their kiss, spreading a pleasing heat through Charlotte's body.
It was when the young witch felt the vampire's tongue pressing softly against her lips, wordlessly pleading entrance, that something inside of her rebelled. In one fierce burst of motion Charlotte stepped back and slapped Loretta in the face.
Loretta just smiled as the reddish glow on her cheek quickly faded into its usual paleness.
"I expected no less, truth be told," the vampire said, turning both eyes on Charlotte once again.
"I will resist you," Charlotte panted.
"Why would you? When I have so much to offer you?"
"Because you're evil," Charlotte snapped.
Loretta laughed. It was a haunting, insulting sound. "Evil? Perhaps, but no more than you. Outside our castle your kind is pointlessly killing each other for the most absurd of reasons. And yet we are more evil than you?"
The smile drained from the vampire's face and became cold and emotionless once again. She drifted away from Charlotte until she was in the centre of the room once more.
"My offer stands. Neverending life, immeasurable power, eternal love. Please consider it."
"Never," Charlotte said.
"So you say," said Loretta. "Now if you'll excuse me..."
The vampire shimmered briefly and then vanished, leaving no sign that she had ever been present.
Charlotte closed her eyes and felt her remaining strength leave her body. She sagged to her knees and breathed out slowly and shudderingly.
"Never..." she whispered.
