Summer Solstice Ch1: Rumors
Early morning and the sound of the first bell of the new school year echoed throughout the whole campus. Students dashed down the hallways as quickly as possible for their first class. Riku began walking towards his homeroom with a lot in his mind. Today was the day he officially decided that he would confront and express his feelings to his best friend, feelings he had since freshman year. At first he wasn’t really sure about it but when Sora left on a family trip for a whole month it was tearing him up. His only means of comfort was that every night he would stay by the computer hoping Sora would manage to get on a nearby computer and send him an IM. They only chatted online for a few days but it was enough for Riku to realize how much he loved having Sora at his side.
Riku entered his classroom and as usual the scenery was of mayhem. At the corner of his eye he spotted Seifer and Rai playing keep away with Tidus’ Nintendo DS and the poor guy was doing his best to catch it. On the other side of the room the popular lead cheerleaders Yuna, Yuffie, and Selfie were busy chatting it up on the latest gossip they can manage get their hands on. Incidentally he managed to overhear them as he walked passed.
"Hey did you hear about the weird rumor at Hollow Bastion?", exclaimed Yuffie as she hopped off her desk and toyed with her cell phone.
"Ooh what what?", Selfie and Yuna huddled up to hear
"Well I just heard there's been a lot of incidents happening at the Bailey during a full moon where some people where found knocked unconscious. Most of them were guys and for some reason after they recovered they keep mentioning about a guy in a trench coat and bright blue eyes coming after them."
"That's all? Sounds pretty stupid to me", Riku interrupted which ended up with three pouting faces glaring at him.
Selfie giggled,"Hey doesn't Riku live in Hallow Bastion? Maybe he's the one who's been attacking lately" They all laughed and continued on with there little chat and began spreading the rumor in their cell phones.
He shrugged it off as he continued towards an empty desk near a group of familiar friends.
“Hey Hayner, do you think you’ll be able to make it to the Varsity team this year?”, Pence asked as he, Olette, and Kairi watched him attempt to spin the basketball on his finger.
“What kind of question is that!? Course I’m gonna make it! If it weren’t for me the J.V. team wouldn’t have made it to the finals!”, Hayner spat as he finally managed to spin the ball on his index when the ball was suddenly smacked into his face.
“Full of it as always”, Riku chuckled as he picked up the ball and spun it on his fingers easily. “You’re not the only hotshot in the team you know”
Everyone laughed whereas Hayner just pouted towards the remark, “Hey well I worked just as hard as you did or anyone else in the team”. Riku chuckled again as he threw the ball back at Hayner. “True true but your chances might be a little slimmer this year what with Seifer being nominated to captain and all”, Pence pointed out when everyone’s attention diverted towards Tidus reaching in the garbage bin for his DS as Seifer and Rai laughed their asses off. Sadly to say last year Seifer somehow managed to worm his way into getting the title of captain of the Cerberus Varsity Basketball team for the following year as well as Rai and Wakka getting positions as co-captains. Seifer and Hayner of course were in no good terms with each other and they all knew he would try to pull a fast one if it weren’t for Wakka being the noble guy he is getting in the way of his plans. At least with him in the team they’ll be able to get somewhat of a fair vote if possible.
Three minutes before the second bell and Riku had yet to see Sora come through that door. He turned in his chair and interrupted a busy conversation between Olette and Kairi. “Hey do you guys know if Sora’s in our homeroom this year?”
“Well seeing as our whole group’s here I can’t see why not”, Kairi remarked while Olette continued braiding Kairi’s hair.
“Oh yeah that’s right you’re gonna tell Sora today aren’t you?”, Olette asked
Rikku blushed a bit and turned his head towards the board, “Eh heh yeah but I’m a little bit nervous about what he’s gonna say you know?”
Kairi and Olette smiled and giggled at Riku’s face turning bright red while Pence somehow caught on to the conversation and looked at them curiously. “He’s gonna tell what to Sora?”
“Forget it Pence, it’s not worth burning your brain about”, Riku shrugged as he laid his head on the desk facing towards the door hoping by the last minute Sora would come in before the bell. As the bell rang his eyes widened hoping his wish would come true, yet instead came in was their homeroom teacher. “Back to you’re seats everyone!”, said Ms. Aeris and everyone hurried back to their desks to be called and accounted for. Riku let out a heavy sigh when he found out Sora won’t be in his homeroom this year. 'Damn if I were here a half hour earlier I could’ve been able to look for Sora', Riku thought as he pulled out his notebook.
The day sluggishly went by as Riku began getting more and more anxious from the passing hour. He didn’t spot Sora during break or at lunch, which was kind of unusual even in Sora’s case being that he would be first in the lunch line to gorge down anything, even the school’s mystery meat. It was the last class of the day and to his dismay it was of his least favored subject:English Literature. Riku got onto his stool and rested his head on his hand and began wondering about where the heck Sora could be. His eyes wandered the class room when he heard the two students behind him talking about what somewhat sounded familiar to what he heard in homeroom about the black coated kid in the moonlight. He shrugged and closed his eyes as he took a deep breath when suddenly his cheeks were being pinched.
“Wakey wakey num nut! First day and you’re already asleep!”
Riku’s eyes widened as he stared at the grinning brunette facing him. He batted off his hands and began rubbing his cheeks. “Jeez Sora, I told you to stop doing that!”
Sora laughed then blinked a few times as he leaned in and had a closer look at Riku “Wow didn’t think I’d pinched that hard, you’re cheeks are already turning red”
Riku froze at the moment, on the inside he was overjoyed despite how serious he was acting and the rosey cheek thing was about to give him away.
“Now you see why I want you to stop” Riku paused for a moment as Sora gleefully sat next to him. “By the way, I haven’t seen you all day where the hell where you?”
“Meh I was here and there and everywhere” Sora chimed as he took out his books from his bag. “Why were you worried about me?”
Riku grunted a little despite how true it was. “Well you missed lunch, ‘course that would be something to be real worried about”
“Oh yeah well I had to stay behind in chemistry class for a bit. I had to ask Dr. Valentine something and he went on and on-“
“Whoa wait a minute, chemistry?” Riku abruptly cut Sora “Since when were you that smart and managed to get into a class full of seniors?”
“Eh well I aced my final for science last year remember? So Dr. Valentine suggested that it’d be best if I’d be moved Chemistry instead of Physical Science”
Riku was downright dumbfounded, he never knew Sora was that smart let alone able to actually ace a test. Remembering the night before the final they were both playing videogames all night until he had to jump out of the window when Sora’s mom came back from work.
“Well kudos to you for getting in that class” Riku said smiling at Sora before the bell rang and class officially began.
The whole day went by pretty quickly and before Riku was able to have a word with his friend Sora jetted out of the class and disappeared from sight. Riku was so frustrated he couldn’t get to Sora to stay put despite the comfort and console of Olette and Kairi and the obliviousness of the other two. He decided he’ll give it another shot tomorrow and headed back home to Hallow Bastion. He spent the whole night trying to finish his homework but he couldn’t keep his mind off of Sora. He kept recalling how strange it was for Sora not to be around him and his friends as he usually would every first day of the school year and that secretly he was hiding his smarts from them.
“If he was that smart he could’ve at least helped me out a bit for my exam” he pouted as he leaned up against the window and stared outside the empty streets of the alleyway. Recalling what he had heard earlier he looked up at the sky to confirm it and sure enough it was a full moon tonight. He looked back down again at the street and stared patiently for anything weird close to what he heard from the rumor. Almost half an hour had past and his eyes were getting heavy.
“Heh I knew it, just a bunch of stupid rumors” As he was about to get up a cold chill came down his spine. "What the heck?" He looked down at the alleyway and noticed a dark figure walking down the empty path. Strangely as the figure walked closer towards his window his heart began racing fast. Riku held his chest as the figure came to a slow stop below him and leaned his head towards the sky. Riku just stared at the still figure as it slowly pulled off his hood, revealing his golden hair under the moonlight. Riku couldn’t believe his own eyes as the rumors being passed around school were coming true in front of him. As he closely looked at him the mysterious guy slowly opened his eyes and stared up directly at where Riku was as he was left in awe looking at the familiar face staring straight at him.
It can’t be…Sora?
