Chapter 1

Moonlight peeked through the oddly shaped windows of towering white walls. Smooth to the touch, Roxas traced his hands over them in wonderment at the ethereal beauty around him. He approached the symbolic shaped window and peered out at the glittering city beneath him. He sighed as he ran his hands through his soft, dirty blonde hair.

Confused is the only word he can think to describe his present feelings. His mind swirled with thoughts and images that seem to have no connection to him at all. These thoughts seem to be getting duller and more hazy with time. Images of a boy in red wielding the same weapon Roxas possessed. Time did not even seem to truly pass in the castle he was brought to after being found alone, wandering in the world that never was.

“How did I come to be here?”, Roxas pondered as stars danced across the purple and black sky.

“And why do I have this weapon, this “key blade”… my superior seems to call it?”.

Roxas could not remember anything before being found by Xemnas, the Organization’s creator. He looked at his gloved hands and did not even recognize himself anymore. He continued to wander through the halls of the castle, unknown by any other member and even himself. He had not truly spoken to any of the other members of the Organization since the day he was brought into this gathering. All he could remember were the stern faces of those around him and how meek he felt compared to all of them.

“Why am I so important to Xemnas?” he thought as he continued to think of the larger, stronger men he was surrounded by.

“It is because of the key blade?”.

He shrugged and remembered the man named Demyx who he could remember being the second youngest member compared to him and the most lively. This man carried a large guitar type weapon that he played with constantly. Roxas smiled slightly as he could hear the echo of music pour through the halls with many mistakes and growls of frustration attached to them. He also remembered the serious and regal faces of the men, Saix and Vexen. They were always together, pondering the mysteries of the world, their existence and recently, of Roxas himself. He shuddered and made it a point to avoid them due to the fact that they make him feel ill.

He thought to himself, “Number 13...” and suddenly remembered, “Why have I only seen 11 other members then?”. Using his fingers, he counted, “There’s Xemnas, Xigbar, Xaldin, Vexen, Lexaeus, Zexion, Saix, Demyx, Luxord, Marluxia, Larxene and…Roxas”.

Confused, he made his way to the library one floor up and sat in a nearby chair, staring out the window. He knew he could truly be alone here. Everyone seemed so occupied, always running around, disappearing and sometimes, not showing up for days it seemed. What was his role in all of this? The sound of the door closing behind him startled him from his thoughts and he reeled around quickly. Standing at the doorway was the one member of the Organization he had never seen. His eyes widened at the sight of a tall, lean man gazing back at him with blazing emerald eyes and pale ivory skin. He ran his gloved fingers through his own long, crimson hair and smirked at Roxas. A smirk that Roxas knew he would never forget. Roxas blushed as he caught himself staring and quickly looked out the window again. A laugh full of mischief and a touch of evil escaped the man’s lips as he saw the obvious embarrassment at the young new member. Roxas turned slowly and jumped to find the man standing over him.

The man held out his hand in greeting and gazed almost lovingly at him, “Hey, the name’s Axel…Commit it to memory”.

Roxas grasps Axel’s hand and shook it sheepishly. Axel’s hand was alarmingly hot and his grip, tight around his own limp fingers. Roxas widened his eyes and stared at Axel’s hand that appeared to be almost steaming. Axel loosened his grip and began to regress his hand. Roxas found himself almost disappointed as their hands part.

“Hey there…” Axel smiled and pointed out that Roxas had forgotten to let go of his hand. Roxas snapped out of his trance and his face flushed red and became hot with embarrassment. He turned back towards the window to avoid Axel’s intense gaze. Axel cleared his throat and rubbed the back of his neck nervously, trying to ignore the knot gripping his gut as he stared at Roxas, who was trying his hardest to ignore him.

“So…..Roxas, chosen wielder of the key blade..” Axel broke the awkward silence. Roxas steals a glance of Axel out of the corner of his eye.

“You know how to use it?” Axel smirked. Roxas’ obvious doubt shines in his sapphire eyes as he turned towards Axel once again.

“Come then…” Axel turns and begins to walk out of the room slowly. He turned his head slightly to see if Roxas was following and Roxas saw this hint and stumbled after Axel.
He followed quickly after the red head’s long strides down the spiraled stairs. He stops at a large doorway and pushed it open to reveal a large empty room with seats around a central stage. Axel smiles and entered confidently. He climbed onto the stage and turned to stare down at Roxas. He gazed up at Axel admiringly and his lips parted slightly.

“Well?…” Axel held his hand out to Roxas and pulled him up onto the stage. He walked to the opposite corner of the stage and smiled widely at Roxas.

“Alright….defend yourself!” Axel cried as he thrusted his arms out to his sides with flames wrapping around his coat and two oddly shaped weapons materialize out of nothingness into his hands. With eyes wide, Roxas’ mouth dropped open as Axel began to rush towards him, igniting the stage in his path. He threw his arms in front of him in defense. As Axel’s weapon came down from the air, Roxas felt his hand become hot and a large black key blade appeared out of oblivion. A loud clang sounded as the chakram collided with the key blade.

“That’s more like it!” Axel called out and laughed at Roxas’ surprise. Roxas looked up from his cowardly stance and a confidence from deep within began to boil. A smile streaked across his face and he drew the newfound weapon, ready to fight. He cried out and ran towards Axel and the pair broke out into a fierce battle. The sounds of clashing weapons and laughter were heard out in the halls. Xemnas, Vexen and Saix walk slowly towards the room, speaking of the universe and silence their conversation to listen in on the battle.

“Ah, I see Axel is testing the key blade wielder’s strength” Xemnas smiles.

“Fascinating” Vexen adds as the trio waltzes into the stage room. The men take seats and observe as Roxas hits Axel across the back with the key blade, causing him to cry out and curse. Xemnas smiled and crossed his arms in front of him. “Excellent…”.

Axel disappeared as Roxas slashes violently and reappears just in time to throw his weapon towards Roxas. Axel’s face streaked with a playful rage and Roxas’ face dripping with sweat from the immense heat rising off of Axel during battle.

“Burn Baby!” Axel yells as he ignited the entire stage with red hot flames. Roxas jumped into the air and Axel chased after him, smiling. The two men collide in mid-air and Axel pushed Roxas down onto the hot floor of the stage. Sitting on top of Roxas, Axel forced him harder against the floor, causing his coat to singe slightly. Roxas sucked in a gasp through clenched teeth and his brow furrowed as he felt himself almost submitting to the force of Axel on top of him. Axel bent closer to Roxas until they were face to face.

Roxas felt his hot breath against his cheek as he whispered “Give up…”.

Roxas blushed intensely and glared up at Axel. He noticed his superiors watching him out of the corner of his eye and snapped out of the spell Axel seemed to have him under.

His face twisted into a grimace as he screamed “NO!” and he uses the last ounce of his strength to push Axel off of him.

Axel landed on his feet and laughed, “Good” as he summoned the flames and his chakrams away. The room had a newfound silence that was only broken by the two men’s panting. The two didn’t even notice Xemnas fully until be began to clap quietly. Axel jumped and reeled around to face his superior. Roxas dropped the key blade and it disappeared back into the nothingness from which it came. Xemnas smiled at Roxas and nodded as he walked out of the room silently with Vexen and Saix not far behind him. Saix turned, “ Do not get too close to him Axel”.

Axel heard Saix’s voice in his head and scowled at him as he left the room. He turned to Roxas and smiled. Roxas approached Axel and held out his hand

“Thank you”. Axel stared at Roxas‘ hand awkwardly without accepting his gesture.

“Don’t mention it….”.

Axel jumped down from the stage and stopped short at the doorway, feeling Roxas’ eyes upon him. He turned and caught the boy gazing at him. Roxas felt himself drawn to Axel like a moth to the flame. He could tell Axel didn’t care what anybody thought of him and he seemed to walk with a confidence that Roxas was oddly seduced by. Roxas watched as Axel turned and caught a glimpse of a blush on the redhead’s face that was obviously not from battle. With widened and embarrassed eyes, Axel rushed quickly from the room, leaving Roxas alone, once again.
