Love it!
Even without knowing the tumblr picture/post, your story manages to convey great emotions. I personally found the fact you didn't mention the reason of Daxter's sadness very professional, an accomplishment of a true writer, for it adds a sense of continuity and manages to stay clear of the trap of the "single vision." The end also leaves much thought matter for the brain...
